The good thing is-you won't have to cook for her! She doesn't eat, won't buy expensive shoes or move into a home that you don't approve of. She won't EVER do anything to get on your nerves, she won't say a word while you are fishing (though she might pop if you get to close with the hook), she won't complain about your mom, no birth control issues. I think she really is your type. Hell, anyone can cook!(anyone living, anyway)

The blogger quit and closed the blog-that means he doesn't have to answer to anything, nor will the truth show up on the blog. Damn.

Plaintiff awarded in punitive damages -21M & 1 dollar. Total award, 28M & 1 dollar. Here's more info
by AndersonsInfo inthe plaintiff, candace conti's goal from the very beginning was to bring enough attention to this problem to incentivize watchtower to change its policy of secrecy.
the award can be explained as it was decided: separate compensatory and punitive damages.
the punitive award is established in law to punish wrongdoing - here, the conscious disregard for others - and deter that conduct in the future.

I hope the WT has to eat up every bit of that 21+million. Then I hope every abused child sues likewise. And no, not on the principle of the thing-I want it to HURT the WT where it matters to them. They always recuperate from PR issues ('75, UN, other child abuse issues), but $$$, that will hurt them where they live.
OK, I really really want their rep to take a fatal hit. I just don't think the JWs will care. The best we can do is to get the HH's to care enough for THAT to impress the JWs. Most R&F aren't about the money, they are about their image as being a clean org. When that is visible ruined-when people tell them what a shoddy group they belong to(not about religious issues, but human decency), some JWs will hear that and get the message. Hopefully.

UK convention dramas recorded by American actors - the GB's yearly gaffe
by cedars ini'm just curious as to whether any of my fellow brits ever pondered how the society can be so stupid as to insist using the us drama tapes at uk conventions rather than having them re-recorded in a british accent?.
as all of us brits know, the convention drama is a subject of subdued derision among uk publishers - and i've been to many a party or social gathering where, at some point, somebody whose had a little too much coke re-enacts a scene from a drama mockingly (typically by gesturing wildly into the air and saying "jer-ho-vah gaaard!!
" in an over-the-top american accent).. what the society clearly doesn't understand is that the dramas really lose their emotional impact with british audiences when performed in an american accent by amateurs.

Pffft. The dramas are laughable in any accent. I can't remember why, but I do remember more than a few titters during the dramas when I was in. They were badly done for Americans, too. Sometimes I remember wondering how culturally illiterate they were to have even come up with some of the alleged dialogue. The dramas are just stupid. Period.

I am just going to say this from the standpoint of having been in the media. Personal stories are paid attention to-the little local newspapers that survive do it because the writers are telling readers something compelling that they don't see in national news.Neighborhood people in the news.
DO contact your local news guy-the one that is famous for raking up scandals or skewering the bad guys. The investigative reporters are best-every city of any decent size has one and the smaller papers have someone that fills that role when necessary. DO contact them and tell them, and appeal to them to get the LOCAL PERSONAL stories of the local JWs, their response etc. This issue is easier to ignore when it is a national news story on the third page or even on some cable news show. On the first page of the local section or even the front page-people will read it. It will pop up on the first page of online editions because it will be interesting. People WANT to know this stuff-but the national news is very distant, very impersonal. The local elder is your a grocery manager or store clerk or school janitor or mechanic-he's the guy in your neighborhood. This is something we need the NEIGHBORHOODS to know-when the JWs come by, the HH needs to know this is right here in their own neighborhood, not just some national scandal out of CA or NY.
MAKE IT PERSONAL if you want folks to pay attention. People care more about the local impact than a national scandal, from what I have observed. Remember, it's convention/assembly season along with Sandusky and all the other stuff that can give this attention.

I am struck by something and I am sure you all noted it with approval as to how it all played out. Ms. Conti tried to do this in a way that respected the organization and its structure-she did not immediately go to a lawyer, but to the WT itself and the elders to try to right what she knew was wrong. There is NO Jehovah's Witness out ther who will not (having read the story) appreciate that she did not immediately head for a lawyer, but went to the one "who sinned against her", in this case, it was the JW policy that led to her victimization.
JWs can't so quickly dismiss her when there is a legal recognition that she made an attempt to do this in a "theocratic" manner. That the WT didn't respond in any way that was moral or ethical is on THEM, not her. At that point, she had a moral obligation to do what SHE did, since they would not meet their own moral obligation, muc h less legal/ethical ones.

Barbara, the Plaintiff, having proven their case with the rest of the WT org. can now go after the WTBS PA in a separate action, if I understand correctly. Separating it before the WT did was probably really smart. I hope they go after the biggie and get them even more. The fact that (I THINK) AFTER the abuse happened the WT separated all the entities might well mean that the WT PA is just as culpable-not to mention since they are the holders of the money of the NY entitity, they clearly have a dog in the fight. So to speak. They just are low down sons of dogs, all round!

I'm no longer in the States, so I don't have a local newspaper to inform. I hope that each of you will contact your respective local investigative news reporter and ask for them to do an article and get commentary from local JW elders and congregational members. I think that local requests, repeated hundreds of times across the country could result in quite a lot of overal coverage. I live in Egypt. Right now there are other fish a frying, and JWs figure very minorly here. I do hope you all get on the stick about this, though!

So how will / should the Watchtower respond publicly when the news of their lawsuit loss hits the news?
by sir82 inin case anyone missed it:.
http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/scandals/227017/1/watchtower-found-guilty-ruled-to-pay-7-million-to-1-victim-wow.
the wt has been found negligent and ordered to pay $7 million to a vistim of child abuse, plus punitive damages (not yet determined).. the punitive damages may well exceed the $7 million.

This case is significant because they put the blame squarely on the org for their actions(or inaction). They didn't just say you knew about this guy, they said you knew and you had a very specific policy to shield HIM and not protect her-which is ILLEGAL. This isn't about the original abuse by the Kendrick criminal, but is very specific to the crime the WT perpetrated against Ms. Conti.

Can you imagine how much they have been paying out in settlements over the years? That's nothing compared to their upcoming expenses. Think how many people thought taking on the WT was a losing proposition? Think how many would accept a small payout rather than go through the hassle. I think that $28 million kind of looks like it is worth the hassle for a few attys and plaintiffs with actionable cases.
I'm glad this happened. I hated reading the smug little JW's who were always saying that there was nothing ever 'proven' against the WT in a court case! Wipe their smug little smirks right OFF their face.
