Are the Jehovah's Witnesses rewriting Jehovah's Law regarding Polygamy?

There is no place in the Bible that forbids marriage to any number of people. In fact, the part translated that elders etc should be th husband of "one" wife could be translated as husbands of "A" wife-and as the verses go on to describe that a man needs to show that he can manage his own household, this makes sense (the word translated as one is often,in other scriptures translated as "a"or "first".)

However, I would say that polygamy is not something that most would or could accept in our day, and no one should be thinking there is some extra special righteousness in following this practice.

I think (along with Wasanelderonce) that AIDS is what did it. Hepatitis is scary enough for people to think 2x. But if it is death or an infitesimal chance of gettng a blood borne illness, I will take my chances with whatever gives me the better chance.

Scared I'll Never be Happy Again

so it's' been 8 months since i was disfellowshiped.

i moved out of my mothers house accross the country to room with a friend.

things have been going ok, it's just strange to be so far away from everything that felt familiar, even the meetings.

You don't have to follow the JW line of what an ex or apostate JW is. You don't have to drink, smoke or hook up with anyone if that is not really what you want to be doing.

Get the therapy recommended, but mostly start building LIFE. Get your education started, or at least employment-start moving in the direction you wish to go. Join a book club or a hiking group or a dining club or something that interests you. A wine club or a puppy training class (ok, you need a dog for that!). Start exploring your natural interests, go to a book reading, take up swimming or tennis. . . stay physically fit-it will support everything else.

Don't long for a life you never wanted just because it is familiar. Fix your settings so your mom isn't going to see anything that you don't want her to see on FB.

Please don't fall into a pit. Thats what they want. Even your mom wants you miserable and devastatedso that being a JW looks good in comparison. DON'T PLAY THAT GAME.They will win.

How many remember the 15 min break Between the Public Tlk and WT Study?

as kid i remember a break of 15 minutes between the public talk and the wt study.

all the new ones and "weak" ones ran out to smoke.

loved to see the attendant round them up to come back in when the droning began again.

This all ended when I was too little to appreciate the 15 min break. Dang. CANDY? We weren't even allowed to doodle on the margin of the stupid WT study w/0 getting a dirty look by some of the old ladies(and a pinch/evil eye from mom)

I grew up in the 'beat your kids if they aren't paying attention' generation. No smoke/candy breaks for us! I'm lucky my mom wasn't inclined to abuse like Bro blankety blank was. His whole family looked whupped.

JWs in a frenzy!

anyone else get the distinct impression that jws are being worked up into a frenzy with all the changes and activity nowadays?

by the end of august, there will have been four campaigns inside of a year.

one last november, a memorial campaign, a convention campaign and an advertise jw.org campaign.. then there's the conventions with all the hooplah around that with all the video, and the aggrandizement of synchronized gb talks.

I think they are making hay while the sun shines. they are spinning this "100 years since 1914" THEIR WAY before folks get started thinking and wondering about the "history" and investigating it on their own. Keep them busy with the WT version of the story and they won't have time to do indepedent study.

Grieving in JW Land

while experiencing a seemingly annual time of grief over the deaths of my sister and mom, a few other posters mentioned they experienced similar episodes linked to family deaths.

i've known some in my jw family who have this shared experience as well.. i know that grief as an emotion must be dealt with, that is, allowed to happen and be experienced, or we end up stuffing the emotions inside ourselves.

and any emotions we've stuffed and hidden will always try to get out in the body's normal course of healing itself.

Hi, I'm sorry for your loss.

I think it is worse for JWs than just not being able to grieve properly. With my non JW dad dying, my mom just went into an alcoholic stupor for a few years. Everything she knew said that he died "knowing" the "truth" and rejected it. I also think a big part of the problem is that she doesn't truly "buy" it herself, but can't/wont articulate her issues out of loyalty to the organization

My mom and dad loved each other a lot. He put up with her being a JW and she put up with him rejecting it. I know she worries for him still cause her hope for the future conversations are always qualified by the fear of what will happen to him.I don't even know the official WT teaching on it, but I do know that death is something that weighs very heavy on my mom for every one of her family members, especially the her (JWish) brother.

My Story

i'm 30 years old, and i was raised in the organization, my parents and grandparents are witnesses.. i grew up in a small town, and due to boredom or adhd or rebellion, i never took 2 minutes to look into the religion.. i always went to meetings and field service.

my parents were regular, but never "super-witnesses" so it was always the thing we did (meetings and service) not much more and nothing less.. the congregation, that i grew up in was for the most part friendly and enjoyable.. small towns, are very unique and they cannot be compared to larger city congregations.. i honk that they are a living and breathing organism, depending on the coordinators personality, so goes the personality of the congregation.

thi king back, most of the people in the town that i grew up were good people, just simple hard working & honest people... i really long for the innocence, of the time when this was the truth, and there were no worries.. driving to the conventions at 3 am with my dad and another brother, them slicing meat, me sneaking around the halls of the college, getting into all kinds of things.. conventions were a really special time for me... when i was young me and my friends would run around, messing around, pulling pranks on people, getting into forbidden areas.. running in the hall ways.

My daughter's wedding dilemma

my daughter will be getting married this coming august.

she and her future husband are not jehovah's witnesses.

they will have a non-religious wedding ceremony.

So, your non JW daughter is inviting JW relatives and ex JW relatives and she is supposed to be a hall monitor? Or you are?

I would not own that at all. Figuring the numbers for the reception, only count half of the acceptances of the JWs (no sense in paying for the ones who walk out before eating) and realize that you are not responsible and should not be HELD responsible for this-however, if you will be DFd for this infraction(!) then you need to consider whether you will go to your own daughters wedding. Seriously, This is so whacked. Do you really want to even open the BOX to this game?

Dear Abby would say that you don't have to interphere at all. If they want to be idiots, that's on them. Hope they leave the present!

How large is Societies legal department?

i was just thinking about the wt attack on education and wondered where they would be without it.. does anyone know how large the legal department is at bethel?

is it larger than the writing department?

service department?

As to the ethical issues that these lawyers should be concerned with; these are the same people that for years have told each other to turn in friends and associates that were JWs if they received medical treatment that indicated they had done something against the religion.In spite of LAWS that forbid it. This is the same group of folks that has consistently discouraged families from going to the authorities if their children were abused by someone within the organization.

Chilling? Not an issue for them,I'd say. Their ethical foundation is cracked from the start.

They have to send Bethelites and known faithful(or trapped!) to law school because very few lawyers in practice would convert. NOT because lawyers are better or even smarter than people in general, but because they are trained to look for inconsistencies and contradictions. I honestly can't see how a lawyer with fully formed skills AS a lawyer would become a JW (which explains a lot of the nonsense from Rutherford, IMO, he was a hack).

I honestly don't know how someone with the gullibility of a 4 year old could convert in these modern day times when so much information is available about the WTS.
