  Futility of being right

  so, on another thread, about pluto, grreat teacher said something that speaks to my feelings about religon.

  "i've kinda been sad since pluto has been demoted to dwarf planet.. you talk about 9 planets and all the little kids at school will correct you real quick and tell you that now there are only 8 planets in the solar system!".

  nothing in the universe has changed but the opinion of men.

  Very sad news - Amber Scorah

  Nothing in the universe has changed but the opinion of men. Some men. And because some men say there are only 8 planets (and kids agree!) ok, now there are 8.

  Nothing in the universe changed but someones opinion of what constitues a planet. Do I think Jesus died on a cross or a stake? Do I think we are saved by works or by faith? How do I figure end times chronology?

  Most every religious debate is pointless. What "I" think about any of it fundamentally doesnt matter if I am an asshole to the the people around me. And If someones ideas are so crazy that they are doing insane things, you couldn't change their ideas anyway. They are just nuts and deal with their actions appropriately. I like discussing religious ideas, but weighing it down with judgment and disrespect puts me off that particular pasttime.

  I think what got me going on this was the "little kids at school correct you real quick" comment. What ugly thing inside us has to always be RIGHT? Especially when it doesn't matter?

  I am actually a horrible person this way. I am so aware of this flaw of mine these days. I would like to blame it on JW thinking/upbringing,but its not just a JW thing. Its a character flaw that I think being a JW can exacerbate, but I haven't been a JW for over 30 years. REALLY, this is my own flaw that I need to deal with, but I am not even sure what it is and I don't know how to make that inclination go away. I am a lot better about shutting up (sometimes), but its like I'm fighting a natural instinct, like trying to make myself left handed. Its just what I do-I argue to prove I am right (I get out of the discussion when I am uncomfortable and I will not sleep to stay in one if I am enjoying it)

  This is not an attractive quality. Insights welcome.

  Faye and others. I am like most Muslims I know-we just want to worship one god. We can call the crap on both sides-extremists and haters . Unfortunately (for me), most Muslims are more in danger from Islamist extremists than anyone. I have family that has been directly affected. I also have family that has had exactly the same family honor issues my birth family did. Molested child and the perp mysteriously disappeared (old days when going to the police was NOT done for that in any culture) Dead adulterers where the widow was excused as it was a crime of passion because it ws a spouse.

  Sometimes I think our culture think we are centuries ahead of the rest of the world and socially, we are maybe 15 years ahead in most ways:)

  I don't care what brand of christian anyone claims to be. We know who loves God by the way they treat others. Whatever religion one is. Its personal. If I knew then what I know now, I would have left religion off my plate and kept my faith in God to myself. It doesn't fit in any box I've ever found so well as Islam. But that is not the scholarly version just the simple one. Scholars make me itch-bible, Hadith, physics. . .

  well another big bad elder here just wanting to say sorry.. i'm sorry that so many were treated like crap, and shown that god's love is not to be found around jehovah's witnesses.

  i'm sorry that inadvertently i've likely taught many to judge and as such see that racism permeates every corner of the jw world, else why else would someone be of the world, or even inactive.

  i'm sorry i sat in on a jc, and voted to df.

  I'm sorry. I got in pity party mode and it became about me. I just read about people who are about to give it all up for a principle and I just want to make sure they do a lot of counting of the costs and potential costs of such an action. For me, leaving the WT didn't destroy me-I was still young and life was ahead of me. But leaving it behind as an adult has a lot of repurcussions and I guess I just can't be in the rah rah corner for chucking it all up for freedom. If I didn't have kids, I don't know what I would have done. I have got about 3 relatives who still speak to me normally. The rest kind of are afraid to even talk to me in case they get shunned or gossiped about TOO. There is more than one kind of shunning folks and it aint just something JWs do!

  Just count your costs. And add some padding, cause it will cost a lot more than you anticipate.

  Donation to WWW raised last night.

  so there was announcements last night that the set amount of donation was going to be raised.

  i don't believe out hall has a mortgage or "forgiven" mortgage.

  but the hall already donates a set amount above what is put in the www box, from the local fund.

  Why dont they integrate the ASL congregation into regular halls? Wouldn't that be more inclusive? And long term, economical?
