DJS, the mega churches often have special group ministries for gender, age, interest and other groups as well as small family group fellowships. They have activities and educational opportunities that are voluntary. They have volunteer brigades directed towards food or missions abroad or teaching children, helping homeless or abused. Doesn't matter how big a group of JWs you get-that ain't happening. -

People who study for years ??
by Clambake inin my cong ( my wives cong.

My mom was first taken to the hall by a lady who came to her house doing door to door work when my mom was two. She had a baby brother and her mom was pregnant again. The JW lady offered to take her to the hall (later took her siblings as the new kids KEPT ON COMING). Anyway, this lady took special care for my mom and lavished her with a lot of attention that she was not getting as the eldest of 6 kids (and a few miscarriages along the way, so there was that drama, too). My moms association and on/off studying went on for about 35 years as she was finally baptised when I was 13. In the early 70's she had trouble with smoking. She didn't quite buy the escatology(she claims to this day, but she dragged my dad to the hall in the early 70s, so I dont believe her). She always considered herself a JW, we didnt celebrate holidays after I was 8, and I, like Candace Conti DID go out in service without my mom A LOT (my worst experience was getting stuck with a sour old pioneer on a regular basis, best experience was the cute boy two years older and the charming MS who was about 10 years older (he was later dfd and reinstated for the normal reasons).
So, essentially, mom 'studied' or was associated strongly with JWs for 33 years. Many of her relatives got sucked in, in the meantiime, including her younger brother and sister, several aunts and many cousins. One is still a JW, after 3 DFings, she is a pioneer.
Do you think she set any records? She was inactive (didn't tell me!) for a while after my dad died. Still thinks it is the best option out there but claims she doesn't expect that they have it all right. I think choosing a religion for being the lesser of the evils is an interesting way to do it:) I think she is one of those that cannot be reasoned with because she has the emotional tie.
I think she kept under the radar because everyone assumed that she WAS a JW (albeit a weak one). Later, I was DA'd and I think that was because they assumed I, too, was baptised. I had more service hours than most elders did.

Did you know WTBTS applied for Holocaust compensation?
by umbertoecho indid you know that the wtbts applied for these compensation funds?
i had no idea and if this has already been addressed then so be it.
i find it interesting due to the fact that so much is made of the jws being in camps during ww2 and nothing else is expressed about the other millions who died in these camps.

A few JWs died without heirs and we want to be their heirs!
Funny thing is that most of the "JWs" were actually "Bible Students" weren't they?

Separated for over a month...
by cognac init hasn't been easy at all... trying to care for two kids- ages 3 & 6, while working fulltime, barely any support from immediate family, my ex has only seen the kids twice for a few hours, ughhhh.... i make way to much money to qualify for any sort of help, ex barely makes anything so that's out.... this is a million times harder than i could have even imagined... but, we are managing somehow; abeit, a little creatively at times.... i had just started thinking to myself, "we can do this!
" then, my house got robbed, about 10k worth of stuff stolen... ughhhh..... this is so depressing....

What a tough time. Any chance the ex took stuff because he feels it's his? My ex would.
I'm sorry, it's hard and will be for the next 15 years minimum. But after you get through the upcoming months and all of their issues, you will get the superwoman cape and be able to handle anything life throws at you.

July 19th Watchtower Summary. Insanity
by Lemonp injust got back from the wt study and it overall was just so blindingly biased and leading.. i had to read it from the platform too, i hope they couldn't see the confounded look on my face as i read this craziness out!.
first we consider the faith of abel, enoch, noah, abraham, isaac and jacob, and moses.. all of these people are held up as sterling examples of blind faith, with the article pointedly saying that their imaginations sustained their faith in gods promises for them.
no mention anywhere at all that all of these characters saw and talked to angels, spoke to god himself, saw and performed miracles, or any of the other feats experienced by these characters.

They settled a case after a verdict and before vindication. Conti wiped the floor with them though some dubs think they won. It isnt the same cult. Just as bad, New m.o. -

Family Reuinion and Being Disfellowshipped (sorry...but it's long)
by babygirl30 init has been a long looong time since i posted on here, but never ceased reading all the posts and keeping up on the changes that have been going on!
but it just seems that now i have a need to get something off my chest, and this is the one place that will most definitely understand the topic at hand.
i have been disfellowshipped for about 8yrs now, and have dealt with the 'consequences' of that decision: all my so-called friends in the org left and i was also abandoned by my own family.

What more can he do to you? You can state the truth without being a drama queen (you don't seem at all inclined that way from your writing here, btw). The simple truth is ugly enough, even if delivered by a loving person. The family thinks he's an asshat. -

Write or talk to him if possible and tell him the witness he gave to your family and how it just underlined his other bad behaviors with a heavy black marker. Talk about making Jehovah or his organization look bad. On his own, he makes them looks bloody evil. -

Futility of being right
by JWdaughter inso, on another thread, about pluto, grreat teacher said something that speaks to my feelings about religon.
"i've kinda been sad since pluto has been demoted to dwarf planet.. you talk about 9 planets and all the little kids at school will correct you real quick and tell you that now there are only 8 planets in the solar system!".
nothing in the universe has changed but the opinion of men.

Thanks everyone. This week I have had a lift from just recognising this. It's freed me from dwelling on things that sap my focus. I'm putting energy back into some things that actually matter in real life. Learning and writing. I'm focused on listening. I'm learning things I never knew and actually hear my own thoughts with more clarity. Still scrambling to stay more open eared. Talked to a Korean airlift adoptee about her experience. Which is to say I listened. Fascinating woman, lots of insight. She's a narrative therapist.

To DA or not to DA, that is the question?
by dubstepped inlet me preface this by saying that i don't expect anyone here to make my decision for me.
i do however note that like the bible says, in the multitude of counselors there is wisdom, and this is a huge decision, so i wanted to put it out there for discussion.
i really appreciate your words of wisdom, as this affects not just me but my wife also, as we find ourselves in the same boat.

Hi. I respect your struggle an whatever you do, you are going to be alert for the calls, visits, grocery store awkwardness. Because when you write the letters, you are back on the radar of every busybody JW that you know. And you will have burned some bridges And acknowledged WT authority as mattering to you at all.that would be my sticking point now, along with burned bridges-but I have done that in a different context with people I really value in my life, so I have a different perspective at outset-I actually lost something that mattered to me.
I'm in favor of not referring to yourself as a jw, live life with no JW constraints that are not of your choice and let chips fall where they will. Any JWs curios, they can ask and you can tell them w/o them getting in trouble.
The letter might feel satisfying. You could tuck into will to be sent to congregation on your passing. All the satisfaction, no harrassment

Drivers or companies can be totally out of business with too many violations. It really doesn't take much. They have a great record. Good for the drivers a and maintenance guys.
