A massage that could go on forever or on to something else(whatever their mood) is usually appreciated. We women know if we GET a massage where it will inevitably go, but I don't think we are so likely to have the same expectation when we offer a massage. Foot massages for tired and stressed out people are really nice after a long foot soak/scrub in nice hot water. (Nicer for the massager, too!)Good food. A cold beer, a hot toddy. Comfort food. Comfort sex. Whatever makes him happy. A big hug when he walks in. Verbal appreciation-not laid on too thick.

Is manner of dress more important than respect for Jehovah?
by LaurieM inmy mother and i were discussing the fact that she was told by a minister of the jehovah's witnesses upon being asked whether mother was going to be attending a book study at her local kingdom hall and mother requested whether she could wear slacks she was told that it would not show respect to jehovah and that women in the kingdom hall should "dress appropriately" by wearing skirts or dresses.
after discussing this, my mother and i feel that the manner of dress of a jehovah's witnesses, whether man or woman is totally irrelevant to respect to jehovah god.
clearly, even if one were to present themselves at hall in rags, that person is not disrespectful to jehovah if his mind and heart are open to god's word.

Jesus' was naked during his final hours on earth when he was praying publically. God has us born naked, he created man naked. For that matter, men and women wore essentially the same tunic in bible times-there was a gender distinction, but it wasn't in the basic form of the garment. It isn't the outward that tells God about us. And if a person would reject actual truth because of the fact that the messenger wasn't wearing a western style suit/dress. . .then there are plenty of other people, of equally good 'heart condition' that would reject the 'truth' because the bearer of it WAS wearing a western style suit/dress. That reasoning is bogus and ill considered. As are many things in the org.

This is so huge.
by La Capra inwhen i was four, i believed that my life could be painfully and tortuously taken from me, in a ball of flame, crashing down from the heavens, just while i sitting down to a bowl of oatmeal in the morning.. when i was nine, i believed that my life, as i then knew it, would be drastically altered, that i would be tortured for being a jw, and after suffering for who knows how long, i would die (because i still hadn't lived up to jehovah's expectations).. when i was 13, i wanted to be a nuclear physicist-because it sounded cool, but in the meantime i believed that i would die in armageddon because i wanted to go to college, get really educated, and have a great, "worldly" life.. when i was 15, i felt guilty that i hoped armageddon would never come, because i so desperately wanted to go to college.. when i was 17, i was offered an honors early admissions in a prestigious program in a highly regarded engineering program.
my mother flat out said, "no!".
when i was 18, i scuttled semi-secretly to the local university, part-time, trying to hide my daily activities without actually lying to anyone.. when i was 19 i quit pretending and disassociated.

You are my hero of the week. Congratulations-awesome job. Awesome that you passed the bar on the first try! Awesome that you have taught! Good math teachers are a great thing, I am sure you can do the same for your new career. What kind of law are you interested in? I'm jealous-I studied to be a paralegal (eventual goal to be atty.) and finished just short of my degree. I know you are in a difficult and competitive field. I hope you make it all that you dream of and don't let the hard stuff get you down. If you can teach kids, you are capable of anything!

Witness mother's and jealousy towards their daughters...
by kittyeatzjdubs inladies, growing up, did you ever feel that your mother resented or was jealous of you?
whenever i would get a compliment from someone, especially males, she would always find someway to turn right around and insult me in front of everyone.
we were at dinner one time with the co and he told me that i was a very beautiful young lady.

Mothers and daughters will always have things between them-they will embarrass each other, harrass each other, hurt one anothers feelings and sometimes worse. And it isn't just about religion or boys or any 'big' thing-it could be shopping for ballet shoes, or muttering about a stupid commercial. Mother daughter relationships are funky little critters on their best days. Granted add the WT into the mix and it reaches a whole new level of frustration, but it is one particular dynamic that I won't blame the WT for. Some things in the religion hightlight it, but the issues are there regardless. Fortunately, in most of the relationships, there is enough love, humor and forgiveness to get beyond the issues-even most religion.

Interesting article about the fact that 99.4% of conscientious objectors in S. Korea are JW. Guess who is supporting a legal maneuver to make it possible for them to do alternative service rather than military service? The Roman Catholic Church. It was stated: "Leaders of Religious men's institutes have called on the National Assembly and the government not to jail conscientious objectors but to introduce alternatives to military service instead."
" In the light of the Gospel, the Catholic Church supports conscientious objection and an alternative to military service, the statement says, citing paragraph 503 of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church."
"Jesuit Father Francis Kim Chong-dae, president of the Committee for Justice, Peace and Environment of the men's Religious superiors, maintained that the superiors' statement affirms established Church tradition. "People can refuse obligatory military service that is in conflict with their conscience, and that is the spirit of the Church," he told UCA News."
"The Religious superiors pointed out that 600 young men are jailed every year for being conscientious objectors, with about 900 currently in prison. Were an alternative to military service available, such "tragedies" would not happen, they asserted."
I think it is interesting how the Catholic Church supporting something that they are not forcing on their members. Yet, "In the light of the Gospel" the Church supports those who have conscientious objections and alternative service. The church tradition is that they can refuse service if it in conflict with their conscience-that is the spirit of the church." Anyone else find it interesting that the RC church supports actual conscientious objection, while they do not tell their membership how their conscience should think? I know that the church is very pro country and anti war-but they do NOT tell folks how to think or mandate what they should do in a given situation that is truly a matter of ones actual conscience. At least in this case! I wonder how often the JW/WT has stood up for things that very few JWs make issue of? How much are they willing to step in for their own people who do something according to their conscience that ISN'T mandate by the religion? They never step in unless they can score some point for the WT society itself. It is never about sticking up for the humble, R&F JW doing the right thing. Jws are on their own unless they refuse blood or military service - things that they would be kicked out of the church for participating in.
No Catholic is compelled by their religion or their family to refuse military service, but the church recognizes that as a valid response to their own teachings. What one does as a matter of conscience should not be compelled into that act by the threat of shunning and absolute rejection-that is truly more accurately blackmail, not conscience based.

There was a baseball player who came within days of being executed for a crime he did not commit(proven with DNA). He was white. And ACTUALLY innocent. Yet convicted. I think OJ was put on trial beacuse they had reasonable suspicion to do so. I think his getting off was abetted by having lots of money and powerful friends, and perhaps racist behavior by cops that cast doubt on the entire case. I think he is thumbing his nose and counting his money-and that is all that any of this is about. How many people care what color he was? He was a sports hero, famous, handsome and popular. No one was 'out to get' OJ in trouble. He brought it on himself. And does to this day.
I think what he is doing to his children is cruel beyond belief. What a jerk!

A Book A Year as a cash flow scheme
by VM44 inwhy does the watchtower release at least one new book each year?
this practice started when judge rutherford was running the watchtower.. even back in the 1930's, when the books were being sold for about 25 cents a copy, a tremendous profit was being made just by the sheer numbers of books produced.
each edition of rutherford's books were printed by the millions!

They studied the James book in the late 70's or early 80's. It is funny-when you mentioned it, I remember how many questions it raised in my mind. Bet thats why they aren't studying it again!

vicodin/vicotussin was giving me nightmares and horrible visions whenever i closed my eyes or tried to sleep. Are you on any medications that were prescribed? Many times they have side effects that are not commonly known.
I am sorry for what you are going through, it sounds horrible. A therapist kind of doctor might be what you need. That kind of thing can literally make you crazy. Have you talked out all the JW stuff with a real person who was willing to listen. Or someone who knows and understands the issues for you?

Second school "in the back." Is this the JW version of the short bus?
by MinisterAmos insome congos stage a second school in the baby room while the main hall is used for the big boy school.. i've noticed (and voiced to the school overseer last night) that only the "popular" jws are used in the main school while the ones with problems always get stuck in the back.
he confirmed that this was planned, and that it was to avoid embarrassing certain brothers and sisters who might be uncomfortable in front of a larger group.
seems pretty loving to me as long as you don't mind that the dozen moms with 30 or so kids have to wait outside in the cold periodically because the room built and designed specifically for them is in use.. actually if they can't stand listening to some people and feel the need to stick them in the back rather than give them full participation rights, then maybe it's time to re-think the whole deal.. forgot: he referred to the main hall school as "the a team".

My cong. had 3 schools! I never thought or felt that there was any class distinction there as we all rotated pretty reg. My mom was super shy and I know would bow out if put in 1st. I was in all of them at one time or another. Sometimes the only fun in the meeting was during the schools, and it happened more in the first school, IMO, because people are more scared up there-therefore they are more self conscious and make funnier mistakes. But I have a weird sense of humor.

She is a great person to have for a friend. I wouldn't reveal too much to any girl that age (about your faith etc) My best friend at that age reported to her elder dad when I informed her of my rape. My mom hadn't felt it necessary to tell anyone but the police. In any case, she is too YOUNG for a boyfriend. 14/15 year old girls don't need boyfriends. A nice guy friend, not intense is great, but she isn't ready for more, and you really don't want to go there when you are getting out anyway. Think of the complications of an underage girl,a close relationship with a known unbeliever (which you could well be soon, if not already) and really pissed off parents who are convinced you are out to ruin their little girl. Even if nothing happens, they will assume the worst, and she could be hurt by that as much as you. If you have a circle of friends, and she is part of it, be friends. I wouldn't go any further until you are both adults (especially till she is!).
I will give this disclaimer-I am the mother of a 15 yo girl and an 18 year old son. I have seen this drama from a few different angles. Nothing needs to happen for parents to freak out at the idea that something might have.
