Hi Pani Cat Tack!
I'm not sure why, but I'm getting an error on the first part of the symposium:
"Unfortunately, the link you have clicked is not available.
Your transfer cannot be completed. Most likely the file has exceeded its allotted bandwidth or has been removed by the original sender or a recipient."
Might be just as well, though. Every time I read a Watchtower I get pretty teed off at the blatant deception.

Is College now wrong for Jehovah's Witnesses again?
by booker-t ini have been out of the jw's for many years now but i still have devout jw's family members.
and i am attending college now at 40 yrs old working on my ba degree.
i was so happy a few years ago when my jw mom told me that the wt is slacking off on telling jw's teenagers that college is bad and it is ok to attend college and universities.

When I was at Bethel, this brother named Paul Heller made the comment:
"Hey, if you wanna go to Bethel, don't pioneer. Go to college, become a doctor or a lawyer, get married and have kids, then bring your WHOLE FAMILY!"
Although I didn't give it much thought at the time, I realised he had a good point. There was at least one family, the McCabes, (sp?) where the father was a lawer and he had a wife and 2-3 kids. They were at the Bossert hotel in a very nice room.
I guess when the skills are needed by the society, a higher education is OK. Just don't aspire to get one!

Learning surprising things about the jws
by greendawn inafter you left the jws and entered your post wts era what sort of things did you learn about them that you found surprising?
there are some recent jws that haven't even heard of russell or even rutherford let alone of their objectionable conduct especially that of rutherford.
or they don't know anything about malawi and mexico, the ray franz incident and the witchhunt of the early 80's, or the organ transplant ban.

One thing that I found out and keep finding out that completely floored me was what an abysmal translation the NWT is.
Using the "New Kingdom Interlinear" translation (it was the only one I had) and later a NASB/NIV interlinear on the New Testament opened my eyes to something:
EVERY DOCTRINE UNIQUE TO THE WITNESSES HAS BEEN REINFORCED BY A DELIBERATE TWEAKING OF AT LEAST ONE BIBLICAL PASSAGE.
Sometimes my wife mentions attending some of the meetings. (This was the first year both of us skipped the Memorial.) Sometimes the thought-control chip goes off and for a half-second I think, "Hmmm, maybe it wasn't quite so bad as all that." Then I come to my senses.
If start to get complacent I just grab the latest issue of the Watchtower or Awake! and double check the secular quotations and scriptures used. That always gets me sufficiently teed off. Then I show it to my wife and she comes to her senses too.

Hi Tez, It always takes a lot to put down thoughts and emotions that are so close to a person. I hope you make a speedy recovery from everything you went through. It's so wonderful that you had the love and courage to choose your children over an organization that has such a strangle-hold over its members. Don't feel bad that you weren't able to give Jehovah "exclusive devotion". It's impossible to do that according to the paramaters setup by the Watchtower Society. The demands that the "Faithful and Discreet Slave" puts on the people in the congregations are too much for anybody to fulfill for any length of time. It takes time, but something that was very theraputic for me was to research what the society taught what it teaches now, all the discrepancies that it has with itself, and how that contrasts with what the bible says. It didn't take long for me to find out that the Organization is not divinely directed, that it's headed up by fickle men creating doctrines then justifying their decisions with the bible, instead of letting the bible guide their decisions. -TW

There were some good things about the organisation...
by Do I Stand Alone? ini have read a number of experiences in this discussion forum and quite frankly, i would have to agree that many, if not all, were pretty terrible experiences if not all together traumatic.
i know that my personal 9-11 tragedy resulted in finding out that the watchtower society was involved with the united nations.
that pretty much said it all as far as my "career" in the organisation was concerned.

Just my two cents,
I do miss some of the people still trapped in the org. Being in dubdom all you life, you can't help but form at least some friendships there, albeit shallow ones.
Some good things that I can take as my experience as a witness:
1) My critical thinking skills have taken a good jump since leaving. I don't get fooled easily anymore and I can usually look beyond someone's smokescreen and see what is really going on in a situation.
2) I so thoroughly enjoy my freedom. After 30+- years in a prison fresh air is oh so sweet.

Voting on the Governing Body due to advanced age
by frankiespeakin ini think we need to remember that most of the gb are about ready to kick the bucket, and that effects the way they will try to steer the organization because they have the majority of the vote they are not thinking very long term.. they must know all thier failed predictions and that the end is not really close,, so really they are concerned only about thier own a$$es and want to have a nice position of power and prestiegde up until they die.
they really don't give a rat ass what happens to the org or the publishers when they are dead and gone.
the younger ones(minority) may have concerns that stretch a little more into the future, but only as far as they personally will live.. if we keep in mind the advanced age of these men we may better understand thier voting patern, which should reflect each ones private concerns.

Ithinkisee,
I hold the same opinion of Jaracz. When I was a newboy at Bethel I thought he was pretty creepy.
However, I don't know how scary it is that he's now the current figurehead of the WTBTS. Didn't the reorganization with the new corporate entities here a few years back effectively remove the GB from power in the org?
How much influence to these tired old men actually hold anymore?

IF GOD HAD MEAN MAN TO SPEAK,it wouldn't have placed the larynx where it is
by badboy in.
the larynx etc is placed in such a way that people can choke to death if food goes down wrong way, death from choking can follow.. how will this problem be solved in paradise earth?

Just for curiosity... How do the benefits of speech increase surviaval odds more than not having the ability to choke? And whereabouts on the evolutionary tree did this happen? -TW (And more importantly, how do I get my paragraphs to paragraph???)

After four years, still cleaning up the trash.
by TemperateWarrior ini have a question that i'd like to get feedback for:
how does a person get their finances in order after leaving the dubs?
i've left the b'organization with my family intact.
-

Those are good suggestions. Thank you. As for my wife not working, I know it's unrealistic to expect that. We did figure it up, though. With the type of work she is currently qualified for and factoring in daycare costs, we would be paying out money for her to get a job.

I have a question that I'd like to get feedback for: How does a person get their finances in order after leaving the Dubs? I've left the B'organization with my family intact. Both my wife and I were born JWs. Since we were very active Witnesses, neither of us went to college. We've had to declare bankruptcy and are existing from paycheck to paycheck. Both of us would like to go to college but neither of us really have any idea of where to start, and we have precious little captial to work with. Not taking schooling seriously is one of the things I regret as a former JW. I could have done so much better if I had applied myself. As it was, I took some AP classes and pulled Bs with a little effort. If college was permissible at the time, I could have easily landed a scholarship. Now I'm 35 in a dead-end job with a wife and three kids to take care of. I love them so much and I would like to be able to provide for them to an extent so my wife wouldn't have to work. Or if she did work we would have some extra cash. (I may want to retire someday.) If you have any suggestions or experiences that may help, I would love to hear from you. -TW
