A Religion of Assumptions

the jehovah's witnesses are a strange cultural phenomenon and one that has always puzzled me.

members call it "the truth" and, more boldly, "jehovah's organization.

" but many of those on the outside remain dumbfounded.

The Witness Governing Body claims authority through what's called the Faithful and Discreet Slave. The FDS is a class of people who are thought to be, and think themselves to be, anointed with Christ and destined to rule with him on heaven over earth after Armageddon.

The FDS is thought to receive inspiration from Jehovah God. How, when and to what ends they do the average Witness has no idea.

So, basically they claim apostolic authority just because they say they have it.

It gets deeper than that, but I have neither the time nor the inclination to dredge back up the old paradigm in such detail.

i had an interesting tme in class watching a video on dissociative identity disorder (did - it used to be referred to as multiple personality disorder mpd).

the woman's entire demeanor changed including how she spoke, how she carried herself, even her handwriting.

i could see how jws would easily have said that the woman was possessed by demons.

The subject of invocation (as opposed to evocation) is a common enough topic amongst occultists. Effectively a person may, by purposely ritually taking on the known characteristics of an entity can basically force a, hopefully, temporary DID, for various purposes.

The human mind is much more malleable than most of us are very comfortable with.

thinking like a jehovah's witness would think on a prior discussion thread a couple of individuals pointed out.

to me, that i am more or less infected with "witness" think.

other words, i still think like a jehovah's witness.

Read, read, and read some more. Read things you would never have read before. Read books on subjects that frighten you. Read books about subjects that challenge your sense of self, that challenge your highest morals, that shake you to your very core, that infuriate you.

And consider things deeply. Allow yourself to ponder the questions you would never have allowed yourself before and are reticent to even now, especially now. Because you're not entirely out of it and neither are most of us, if we ever can be.

Discover who you really are, not who you think you are or like to believe you are, but who you really are at your core, your True Self. This is where it all lies. This is the root of the thing.

Have you ever heard of the comparison of the individual to an onion? Layer upon layer upon layer...

How do I explain my Jehovah's Witness past to a potential mate?

explaining my jehovah's witness past to a potential mate all things considered, this is the one thing that bothers me tremendously.. so much so, that it has kept me out of the dating scene let alone to be.

there are some posters who feel "judged" or will be resentful towards a poster who seems too "pure" or moral.

It's probably less that than one portraying a sense of moral superiority over others.

I ask "what are 'worldly morals'"? Who decides what these are? Using the term "worldly" denotes a lack of distance from the JW mind-frame, which, sure, comes with time. And if so much else was so false about "the truth", what makes their instructed moral compass any less suspect?

I ask this not to challenge directly, but to cause questions.

I don't know why that is because this IS a discussion board and all opinions are welcome.

Certainly, but that does not mean that those opinions may not be called into question.

What did you throw out when u became a JW?

it really pigs me off now when i think back to what i was told to get rid of when i was studying.my collection of stephen king books, my new madonna like a prayer record that i loved, my alice cooper and guns and roses album.

i was even told not to listen to classical music because some of the composers led such debauched lives!also any film with an 18 certificate was a nono in case others were stumbled - even though i have seen other jws reading stephen king books and watching 18 cert films and my husband had the complete madonna collection!and of course depeche modes 'personal jesus' song which i loved.

and my lost boys album and video cos it was about vampires.i was just wondering what sort of things were you told you should get rid of and why?

The same day I also threw out about $600 dollars worth of Dungeons and Dragons and other role playing game system stuff. I had been a Game Master at conventions and I really enjoyed those games. I can't ever replace those things. I had all four of the original boxed sets of Basic D&D, and the complete sets 1st ed AD&D, and 2nd ed AD&D. It would have been something that my son would have liked to have, but nooooo, it's all gone.

Oh no... the pain that must bring is not lost on me at all. I was never a huge gamer, but I do still have the gaming equipment I did have. My old dice bag still lies in my night stand.

Thats saying to me that nearly half of all Americans have a small streak of honesty running through them.

That's rather what I was thinking. I'm sure the percentage of people who hope God exists is much larger.

Went to my first Halloween party

i was invited to my first halloween party with some ex jw's.

i was nervous at first at accepting but i never before had such a good time i am so glad i went.

big tex and his wife are wonderful people as were all whom i met there.

LOL! Good save Nina! :D It was odd for me. As long as I'd been out, I was still a bit nervous about being in a house full of people I could have seen at assembly, etc. I think I was much more relaxed at the one after.

Did demons ever really rape some sisters?

i had a conversation last night with someone and we were reminescing about the late 60's and early 70's about how a couple of the sisters were telling at the time that they were being molested and sometimes raped by demons.

in our cong they were told to open the bible to a certain scripture and leave the bible open to it at all times and leave a light on.

anyone else remember some of this paranoia?

Doesn't qualify because the fallen angels took human bodies and were not invisible spirits.

Ah yes, of course. But we're assuming that some sort/level of corporeal manifestation is not a requirement for actual interaction with the material world?
