Jesus between age 12 and 30. . .
by Mad Sweeney ini'm thinking he traveled east and learned the wisdom of the orient.
no way the watchtower line about him being a carpenter's assistant all that time is possibly true.
he was way too learned about the ways of people to not have been educated and his ideas seem very eastern to me.. anyone got any good books, articles, blogs, websites on the topic?.

I've had the feelers out for a new job and gotten some interesting responses. I often get told I'm "overqualified", which probably means I'm too old, too experienced, too expensive, or all of the above. On the other side of the coin, I have tons of agencies calling me and trying to talk me into quitting my current job to accept entry level, 2 month contracts.
Are these headhunters completely clueless? I'm not likely to leave a job I've been at for 10 years for a "lesser title, less pay, no benefits, no pension plan, 2 month contract".
The IT field has really gone to shit. Maybe I should just go back to cleaning windows.

Is "Kingdumb Hall" really an offensive term?
by cyberjesus inif a friend of mine starts to say things out of emotion and i call him "schizophrenic" then that might be an insult.
however if he is having auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking then that word becomes a description of his situation.. now i ask you.
does the attendance to the kh promote intelligence?

Is "Kingdumb Hall" really an offensive term?
I hope so. They're insane if they think they can go through life condemning and insulting all non jws without consequence.

"Who else are we to go away to?"
by simon17 into the intellectually honest witness, it seems like it often comes down to this principle.
"fine, if the witnesses aren't the truth, then show me the better answer and i'll consider it.
" and how do you deal with that?

JWs love the simplicity of black and white, true and false, and are uncomfortable with grey areas. They fail to accept that there are no truly "right" answers for every question or situation.
I don't think there's much hope for them until they learn to get comfortable living with a measure of uncertainty.

It was so riveting that I actually watched 2:09 of it. That's a compliment, by the way. A real JC wouldn't have held my attention that long.

Bethel Heavy...How is this determined?
by LostGeneration ini've read the term "bethel heavy" here and heard it once and a while when i was a jw.
as someone who has never even visited bethel, i was wondering if a few of you can fill me in on the details.. i know of course this is an unofficial title, but what is the main factor in reaching this status?
is it mainly given to those who head certain departments, or even work high up in certain departments?

You get a one of these, but the elder on one side and a pile of shit on the other. If they balance equally then he's a "heavy". The obvious result is that no one is a "heavy" except in his own mind.

Do You Feel Somewhat Liberated When You Talk About Your JW Past?
by minimus ini do.. when i tell people that i was a witness, nobody can believe it!
i enjoy telling them why i left the religion, the harm they cause, and the benefits of being out of it.. do you express yourself in this way too or is it only me?.
-
Finally-Free
Liberated - yes. Talk about my past - NO! I don't want people to think I'm a complete fuckup. There aren't many things that can embarass me, but having been a cultist is one of them.

The King of the North and the King of the South. What gives?
by dgp inif i understood correctly, one of the ideas advanced as proof of jehovah's witnesses beliefs is that of the kings of the north and the south.
i didn't understand much of it, to a large extent because i think it's nonsense, but something else i did find curious.. the king of the north was the soviet union, and the king of the south were the united states.
i am not sure the soviet union is "north" of the united states in any sense (think of alaska), but, that aside, what kind of theological distress resulted when the king of the north crumbled to pieces?
-
Finally-Free
Eight years ago an elder was speculating out loud while out in service. He speculated the new king of the north could be Iraq or Islam as a whole, or even the UN. I heard a few JWs speculate it could be Iraq when the Gulf war started. Since the crumbling of the Soviet Union the WTS's silence on this has been deafening. Maybe they hope people will forget and the teaching will fade away.

Live Action Role-Playing coming to a Family Worship Night near you!
by Mr. Falcon inlately, i have seen demonstrations and interviews on stage of guys who are bragging about how they incorporate dressing up in costume and reinacting bible accounts for their family worship night.. .
family worship evening: serious business.
this kind of bafoonary and other assorted silliness is encouraged to make family worship "fun and enjoyable".
