  worldly friends as a young jw..

  i was reading this thread here http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/10/126156/1.ashx .

  regarding child custody "coaching" etc..... and in it is a discussion about kids having "normal" friendships with worldly kids... many of us grew up jw and i was wondering what your personal experience was regarding having worldly friends.. .

  I was never allowed to have any friends in the neighborhood. I couldn't even walk to the school bus with them.. I had to walk alone. I had friends at school and we were in classes together and ate lunch together, but I wasn't allowed to go over their houses or do anything with them outside school.

  I played an instrument in school and I loved it. I was also very good at it. But from the time I entered high school, the students in band had to play at the football games, and they had to practice on Saturday mornings. Saturday mornings were for field service, and I wasn't allowed to be at football games, so I had to give up band. I was devistated, but that didn't matter to my JW mother.

  Interestingly, I was recently contacted for a high school reunion and have reconnected with the 3 girls I was close to in school. I've told all of them that I'm not a JW anymore. They were thrilled for me... and two of them sent me Christmas cards!

  Explain to a "Non JW", what it's like to be a JW

  where would you start?.

  i guess you could write a whole book on what is acceptable and what's wrong, and the consequences to your actions.

  you could also say all that you have to do and what you have to avoid..

  My next-door neighbor invited me to an ornament-exchange party she was having for all the women in the neighborhood. I told her that I'd love to go but probably couldn't because we used to be JWs and now I wasn't, but my husband still was, and I had to be careful about what I did or I could be disfellowshipped and then every friend I'd ever had wouldn't be allowed to speak to me again... (that was the very short version, I did get into a little more detail obviously!)

  At any rate, I found it really hard to explain what JWs are like, and yet not make it sound like my husband was a nut case for still being a JW! My husband is a wonderful person in so many ways, everyone really likes him. But the mind games I'm in the middle of right now, trying to live as normal a life as I can without getting DF'd, are almost impossible to explain without sounding completely strange.

  did anyone have to get dunked twice at their baptism because you still had your big toe sticking out of the water ????.

  ive seen this happen a couple of times.

  I saw someone at an assembly once who was terrified of water and who was getting baptized. It took forever for her to psych herself up to get dunked, and when she did, she became stiff as a board and her knees didn't go under. So they had to dunk her again. I felt so sorry for her!

  Baptism and At What Age?

  i have seen and noticed that most people who are raised as jw's get baptized at a young age.

  ages like 14-19. how is it that someone can dedicate their life to jehovah at these ages, when maturity is still in development?

  this seems to be something that jw's push and practice on a regular basis.

  I was baptized at 14. I got baptized to try to make my mother happy. I wanted to make God happy, too, but I didn't have the tools to figure out whether or not getting baptized as a JW would accomplish that. If it wasn't something that was expected of me by other people, I would have waited a long time before making a decision to get baptized.

  Kids who grow up in JW homes are completely islolated from the outside world, and have no idea how devistating being DF'd can be for them when their entire world is wrapped up in the WT. It's completely unfair to put kids in this position.

  I've also seen kids as young as 6 being baptized. One of the last assemblies I went to had interviewed a little 8 year old girl on stage... she had been baptized the day before with her sister, who was 6. Complete insanity.

  just a little breaking news:.

  after several years of a great friendship with diane (previously posted as xena) things have started to really come together recently and i've succumbed to making an honest woman of her (or at least as honest as it's possible to make her.

  last night (xmas day) i popped the question and she agreed to marry me (i wonder if she knows what she's let herself in for!!!)..

  I lost my parents today cause of the Dubs...Uggggh!!

  everything has been going well for me for awhile until tonight.

  mom calls and announces she can no longer talk with me.

  i'm sad because i don't get to see mom and dad or my little neice that's sierra's age.

  Feeling very depressed

  it has been awhile since my last post, my husband and i have been very busy.

  we are both back in college, very exciting and life is moving in a positive direction.

  it is break between semesters and i have time to slow down and think.

  So sorry you're going through this. I'm glad that you and your husband have each other.

  It does get better with time. But don't let anyone ruin your life. Live it, enjoy it, and cherish every moment of it.

  Your family might change their minds eventually. I hope they do.

  how many people did you study with to the point of baptism when you were a jw and how do you feel about that.. in 30 years fortunately never brought anyone in except my kids even though i was very active in service.
