Either/Or. Depends on individual circumstances - like everything else in life. Both styles of schooling have their positives and negatives.

You're right ST - tears are flowing.
What an emotionally healthy household - even amidst all their trials and pain.
This bit will stick with me:
Still, she tries — and reminds Emily that her dad, brothers and other family will be there for her when she’s not. “And if you’re really, really still and quiet, I think you’ll be able to think of what I might say,” she says.
Beautiful. Thank you.

What do women REALLY want?
by Abandoned inok, i've heard it all: sincerity, honesty, security, money, love, romance, flowers, poems, promises, and more.
but, in my arguably limited experience, i've been shot down while doing all of these (at differnt times obviously).
so, what do women really want?
-

Abandoned - there are women who want that - really! But women just don't want that all the time. There is a difference between feeling adored and feeling smothered.
I have no doubt that you can love passionately and deeply - you are such a sensitive soul. A woman wants a man who knows what she wants AND what he wants. There is nothing sexier than a guy who knows how to take charge - at the right time. In my experience, men just don't get the timing right, that's all.
See your beautiful sensitivity as a gift. It allows you to be in tune with a woman on a level that unfortunately most men (sorry guys - 'a lot of men') are a bit thickheaded with. I don't know any woman who doesn't like to be surprised with a kiss on the back of the neck. BUT - if I am in a real shit - it will just annoy me further that he can't tell I really want to be left alone at that moment. Sometimes being on the right page means knowing that that is the last thing someone wants - and that is truly love and being in tune. And (just to confuse the eg) I just love it when my husband knows me even better than I know myself and gives me a big hug and won't let go, so I am forced to drop through my anger and dissolve into those tears I didn't want to cry.
There is no right or wrong answer - it is only ever what you sense is appropriate in the moment. Get out of your head and trust your heart.
Women are cyclical in nature - they ebb and flow more than men. Just tune into them - but don't lose yourself in the process. Her happiness is only 50% your happiness, the other 50% is your sense of self. Otherwise you make women feel responsible for your happiness - and that will send us running a mile.

When we say "I'm proud of you" are we elevating ourselves above others?
by Paisley ini don't mean when we as parents tell our children we're proud of them for a certain accomplishment or approved behavior; but when one adult tells another adult "i'm proud of you for (doing this or that)", possibly implying that in our opinion the approved action should have been done sooner, are we elevating ourselves above them?
could it even be a left-handed compliment?
as in "im proud that you've stopped beating your wife.

Paisly - I was pondering this very q's the other day!
I think the problem is the context in which the term 'proud' has been used in the past. Generally we connect it with someone of higher position (adult, mentor, boss, leader, teacher etc) saying it to someone of less experience. And recognising someone's learning experience and respecting the way they have healthily integrated it, is not elevating ourselves. It is just generally that those who say "I'm proud of you" have already reached the 'elevated' position on similar experience themselves. But that doesn't necessarily mean the person saying "I'm proud of you" got there through any accomplishment - sometimes it can merely be an age thing.
However, I guess what you are talking about is the odd feeling when saying it to your peer. I would hazard a guess that you would probably only say it to someone you feel close to. And if that person is genuinely your friend or peer, then they will recognise that you have had the detachment to observe objectively what they have been doing and it's really an acknowledgment of how much you are happy for them, for their reward, for their determination, for their gift - and basically for them!
Maybe we should all start using it more so it loses it's elevated connotation.
It's like saying "I love myself". I remember when my daughter was around two, at that age when they say "I love Mum, I love Dad, I love Grandma etc etc through the family members". She would always finish off with "And I love myself!" with this huge smile on her face. I used to love the fact that she was so naturally emotionally intelligent. But at some unfortunate point in this culture, we have to stop thinking we love ourselves that overtly.
Anyway, I have learnt, like anything, it is not the words necessarily but the way the person says it and the intonation and intent. So use the term proudly if you really mean it

Where would we be now if there was never a concept of God?
by dh inif (for the sake of argument for those who believe in god) there was no god, and no human being who ever lived had ever come up with or even had a concept of god or a higher being.
where do you think we as human beings would be today.
what do you think our history would be like, and our future?
-
zensim
I think this q's is amusing. It's like wondering what it would be like to have the consciousness of a tree, or a camel, a rock or an alien? To have the true consciousness of something else would require complete suspension of any human consciousness (no partial observer) and have no recall of it afterwards. Otherwise, as in quantum physics (to my limited understanding), the observer is affecting the subject.
Any postulations by any of us is born from a reality and perception that has only known a concept of God - whether we consciously reject that concept or not. We are all in error and we are all in truth.
G-O-D pretty much will exist, in the million translations that abound, as long as the unknown exists. The concept of God gives balance when science is rigid or limited. It is only now, in the recent history of mankind worldwide, that the concept of God has begun to take a less positioned place.
Anyway, I just want to say for the record, on this post and all others, that I want to put my avatar next to Tetra, Nark and LT I always seem to land firmly in the centre of whatever you all say. I just wish I could express myself as intelligently.
