Either way you put it...the person who "claims" to be a brother does not practice christian living...so what should be done with him?
This scripture says shun him.
Am I missing something? (No sarcasm meant)
international version 1 cor 5:11. but now i am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler.
do not even eat with such people.. if shunning is wrong.
.how does one explain this scripture?.

We can't totally blame the witnesses for there stance. The practice of shunning is found in the Bible.

"anyone who claims to be a brother or sister" - this is not talking about someone formerly baptized who decides they want nothing to do with the religion
I don't think that thought is in line with what this Scripture says. It clearly is an admonition to stop mixing in company with anyone who was Formerly a brother but who now chooses to live another life.

i would like to get the opinion of those on this community.
does serving as an elder make one a bad family man.
with all the demands placed on those serving... how can one make time for family life?
I would like to get the opinion of those on this community. Does serving as an Elder make one a bad family man. With all the demands placed on those serving... how can one make time for family life? And especially if this person works full time. I suspect that a lot of these model families that are placed on pedestals ( pioneer mother, kids sitting quietly and attentively at mtg., elder dad) are all phony.
Now I could be wrong.... but I don't think so. As you think about the so called model families in your time with the Jw's , or maybe that was your family, .........was it for real or was it all for others to see?
jw's are constantly trying to prove they have the truth.
they always point to matthew 24:14 and say "who is accomplishing this work today?
this proves we have the truth and gods backing".. for those of us in this community looking from the other side what is one thing that proves to you that this organization does not have gods backing?

For me my one thing is the inability of the GB to admit past failures when it comes to understanding. To me if you can't admit that.... yes we did mislead people in the past about 1975 and yes we did mislead some to not have children and get married, and for that we are sorry." if a person can't admit there mistakes... can they really be trusted?
That's mine ... what's yours?
this looks great for people who are both cult survivors and aaron paul fans!

slow but emotionally creepy, hulu’s ‘the path’ portrays family life inside a cult.
I just checked out the 1st episode. It's crazy the similarities. It's like watching an episode of jw dot org The uncut version. I was laughing when the young lady , who looks to be disfellowshiped gets out her car to talk with her elderly parents....but she is suddenly stopped by 3 men who were hiding out to talk to her. As she is running away one of the elders says " we just want to talk with you".
Again ....crazy similarities

Believe it or not I'm happy you posted this talk. About a month ago we had the same talk given to my congregation and I was wondering if my C.O. was going off the outline or inserting his own ideas.
When it came to the part dealing with the "end of the world" he paused and emphatically said "The End will come in your life time". I was shocked the org. would put something like that in the outline. Then I thought "who's lifetime was he referring to, ......the young people in the audience or 80 year old bro. Jones who is about to have heart surgery?"
The C.O. in this recording did not take such liberties.
just wondering, as i will be visiting active jw family in ohio in a few weeks, do you think it will be worthwhile dropping it into a conversation, about the wtbts pyramid near his grave, or try some other topic to try and wake them up.
i was never baptized and don't really care if they get upset or not, but it is only a day trip from ohio to pittsburgh, and thought it would be fun if they denied it, and then drove their to see it for ourselves.
with all the recent changes to this religion, what really is the purpose of being a jw?
especially for those who have been in and witnessed all the changes and still no sight of the end.
for these ones in particular (35-55 year olds) they must be in a state of confusion.
i decided to go to the bethel recruiting meeting yesterday to test out my theory that the organization is in decline.
i assumed that if there is a general feeling of apathy by many in the org, then certainly it would be shown up by the lack of enthusiasm or zeal by many to sign up for bethel service.
well let me say that based on what i observed, this organization is not going anywhere.
