  Do they respect gay rights?

  i am not gay and never have been one, but do you think that your local society treats gays with respect or that it has no tolerence for such a sexually different and in the thought of many deviant minority?

  .

  i personally don't approve of their activities but i can understand that they are genetically predisposed in that way and can't change.

  jstalin, I can't tell if you are happy or unhappy about what Shining One said?

  Joe - I wasn't happy. He implies that it is a choice and/or some changable personality characteristic. He doesn't seem to understand that for us gay folks, attraction to the same sex is an inherent as attraction to the opposite sex is for straight folks. I've always looks at the guys, for as long as I can remember, and I've never had a real attraction to the female anatomy (as much as I tried to convince myself that I did). It just agitates me when folks like Shining One imply that their straightness is not a choice, but being gay somehow is. I don't know if it is genetic or environmental, but I do know that there's no question about who I'm attracted to, and there never really has been.

  Something strange about "Christs invisible presence"...

  something just occured to me: .

  we all know that "parousia" doesn`t mean "invisble presence" at all, it just means "presence", but think about the inlogical...ness about the whole jw-doctrine on 1914. my question is: what is jesus` job really, up there in heaven?

  - he "took reign" and was "given the throne" in 1914. but what does that mean, really?

  Went to my Uncle's Lutheran Funeral

  my uncle passed away a couple of weeks ago and i went to the funeral.

  one of my pet peeves, even as a witness, was how bad the witness funerals usually were.

  just an opportunity to give a witness about why the dead person wasn't going to heaven!

  I recently attended a catholic funeral for an aunt of mine. The priest knew her well and he did a really good job of talking about her life and making everyone feel better (he even made us laugh a few times). I was impressed with his eulogy. He summed up her life well, even though she was a little rough around the edges, he made light of it and talked about her good qualities.

  Ermmm, no it isn't.

  While I don't particularly like the way Rex represents his form of "Christianity", neither will I let pass something that is blatantly in error.

  Please explain. God decided that there was one set of rules in the old covenant, yet all those living in the new covenant were exempt from those rules. Seems like a change of mind to me. In addition, god had no problem ordering the slaughter of thousands in the old testament wars.

  My decidedly atheist individualist view of rights is based on one simple, irreducible, concept - "I own me." No one has a higher claim to me and my life than me. It is not dependent on states or governments or majorities. I suppose I could be described as an anarchist because I believe that all human interaction should be voluntary. 51% of a population's opinion doesn't make something right nor does it make it ok to take action against the losing 49%. Nor does 99% to 1% make an action right.

  The biblical view of rights leans toward an individualist view with a belief in self-determination, but it also is built on a hypocritical god that imposes rules on humanity without observing those rules himself. In addition, victimless "sins" such as homosexuality are condemned with little to no explanation or reasoning. Arbitrary and capricious. No thanks. I prefer a world view that respects the diversity of humanity and recognizes that we all have an equal place in the world, as long as we aren't imposing our will on others.

  Not swearing is proof of the "truth"

  this was a said by my jw relative to my never-been-jw husband this weekend, during a conversation about the prevalence of swearing.. "my friend maria's husband [was unbelieving mate, now a witness] always swore like a sailor.

  he said he could see jehovah's witnesses had the truth because they didn't use bad language.".

  for all the reasons for believing jw's have the truth, this was a new one to me..
