Does Tithing at Church Count as a Charitable Donation?
by OrphanCrow init has been interesting to see the shift in financial strategies that the wts is implementing recently.
from reading recent threads, it appears like 'they' are adopting a tithing donation system, similar to what is practised in "those wicked churches of christendoom".
i am curious as to who it is that stands to benefit the most tax wise in this recent shift.

The church that I frequent sends out statements at the end of each year that documents the dates and amounts of each donation you gave that year and the total for the entire year ... but only if you wrote a check. I suppose you could write your name on the envelope for any cash donations, but I never do. -

_Morpheus:
Yawn... Yea and im the duke of Earl.I'm not sure if you are implying that I am lying or not, but either way, you just sound like an ass.
_Morpheus:
As the parent of multiple high school children in the USA you are incorrect ...Morpheus:
Everybody is an expert on everything on the internet with specialized training in every field. You are so right. And it sounded to me like you were using your "expertise" as a parent to substantiate why you thought I was incorrect, and you knew better. So, I simply let you know my area of expertise to substantiate what I was telling you about how scholarships are awarded, and yes, even academic ones, BEFORE kids graduate. All scholarships come with conditions that have to be met before any money is released. Usually, that entails actually graduating and having the required GPA.

Tsarnaev guilty - should he get death or not?
by Simon ini think he probably will (it is the us after all) but i hope he doesn't.
he caused incredible pain and suffering to men, women and children who had never done anything to him.
many died in unimaginable agony, others are disabled for life.

Don't misunderstand me. I don't feel sorry for him at all. Like I said, I do feel like he deserves it. I want him off the planet like everyone else. I was just saying that cases like this always bring up my uncomfortableness with capital punishment, in general.
To me, killing someone for killing someone does feel a little revengeful, but I guess it depends on how close you are to what has happened. Revenge is a very normal, human thing to feel. If he killed my family, I would want revenge, too.
Punishment, justice, revenge. I still think these are different shades of the same thing.
Personally, I think "justice" would have been better meted out if he were sentenced to live in an 8x8 concrete cell for the rest of his life, living only on ham and bacon. But I guess that sounds a little revengeful!

big accident at Warwick construction site
by oppostate inthe wt society is fond of using the tilt-up method of construction where a network of rebar is made on the ground, concrete poured on it and allowed to cure, then the whole thing is tilted up and voila' you've got yourself a massive big-ass wall ready made.
these walls for several stories-high buildings are indeed massive and weighty so you need a heavy-duty crane to raise into position.. i just heard from an eye-witness ldc volunteer that while there a few weeks ago they had an enormous accident.
the crane tilted and crashed, the only one hurt was its operator.

Perhaps hiring an educated engineer to help them out would solve their problem. It's amazing what a little education can do.

Something terrible has just happened
by Crazyguy inthe neighbor child came over to play with my youngest child.
i think she's about 4 maybe 5. well anyway there was some strawberries out on the counter and she asked if she could have one and i said no.
when i looked over later i saw her sneak one.

It's not her fault. I'm sure a snake made her do it. Did she realize she was naked after she ate the strawberry? -

I know he "deserves" the death penalty, but there is a big part of me that still has a problem with capital punishment. It seems so unevolved for us to say, "You killed us, so we are going to kill you." It seems so opposite of what we teach kids about "two wrongs don't make a right".
This is a topic that I constantly struggle with. Part of me celebrates and says, "Yeah! Kill the bastard!" But then there's the other part of me that says, "Wait ... that's not right, either."
I think the lines between punishment and revenge often get blurred in cases of mass murder.

_Morpheus, as a teacher in the United States for many years now... you are the one that is incorrect. Students apply for and receive scholarships very early. Not all scholarships come from universities either, but even universities start searching for talent early.
We have had high school students as young as 9th grade do so well at the science fair that they received a scholarship. Universities and business corporations often sponsor these events to search out talent they can woo to their university or company. Also, not all scholarships are large amounts or full ride scholarships.
There is also the Duke Talent Search that starts as early as 4th grade, but the famous "test" is given in 7th. I don't believe that Duke University grants scholarships through this program, but it definitely puts kids on the right track to possibly receive scholarships early in their educational career.
If anyone has kids, I highly recommend starting the scholarship search early. It is worth the effort of filling out a gazillion applications. You don't even have to be that academically gifted. Even average kids can garner quite a few small scholarships sometimes.

Also, he doesn't actually say he was offered a scholarship. He just asks the question, "Would I accept a scholarship?" and then blah blah blah I left school and started pioneering.
Most witnesses would assume that means he was offered one, but I think it is just another example of deceptive story telling.

I graduated high school when I was 15. I began college at 16. It happens.
Also, in the U.S. right now, many high school students start applying for and receiving scholarships as young as 9th grade, so that isn't necessary untruthful, either.
Still, it's doubtful his entire account is 100% accurate. They are salesmen for their WT corporation, and salesmen lie.

I originally posted this list on my 10 year anniversary of being out of the organization. I still think it is pretty good advice, so here it is again. I would love to make it a Top Ten List, but alas, I have only eight:
* "Courage doesn't always roar" - Don't let anyone make you think you need to leave in some glorious, dramatic way. Sometimes the drama is unavoidable, but if you can avoid it, there is nothing wrong with leaving slowly and quietly. And there is no shame in closing your blinds and hiding in your bedroom until the elders leave your doorstep!
* You don't have to try everything you were never allowed to do. If seems to me that those of us that were raised as a witness were like a spring being held down by a tight thumb. When we leave, the thumb comes off and the spring flies in every direction because ... it can! Release the spring slowly and don't try everything at one. And some things ... don't try at all!
* You can't save your family. They have to save themselves. The more you try to convince them they are wrong, the more that their paranoia is fed about you being an evil apostate being controlled by Satan. You have to accept them being "in", if you have any hope of them accepting you for being "out". They will leave when they're ready ... and no, they may not ever be ready.
* You will fear God, you will hate God, you will believe there is no God. Don't rush trying to figure it out. Many times, I have shelved the issue and just tried to enjoy living! In time, you will come to terms with what you want to believe or not believe. It is OKAY to sleep in on Saturday AND Sunday. Enjoy it!
* Stay away from religions for awhile. If any of the others get a whiff that you want to leave, they will try to "save you" and before you know it, you will be involved in another witness-like religion and not even realize it.
* You will probably become completely consumed with the "ex-JW' world". It will help you! You will find out the history of the Watchtower and research things you were never allowed before. You will meet people in the same boat as you who will bring you back from the edge. My warning is ... don't let it define you. At some point ... move on. It doesn't mean you can't come back and visit and I don't think it means you have to lose contact with people (like I did), but being constantly consumed with ex-JW forums and only having ex-JW friends is not healthy.
* If you ever choose to attend an apostafest ,,, they are great! But there will be at least one crazy person there that will act so bizarre that you will wonder why you ever left the witnesses. Don't let them rattle them! They were crazy in the "troof", they will be crazy out.
* It will get better! There were many times I truly felt suicidal. But 10 years from now, you will be a completely different person and will not even recognize who you are today. You will wonder why in the world you ever felt so afraid of a group of weeny little men in suits and ties!
