I read 1984 in High School. It was required reading then. I've recently asked every teenager I know if they have had to read it for Lit. class. They never heard of Orwell. (I hope that's a local thing here) That says a lot to me. I think the reason is obvious. Kids are being conditioned to think that the world described in 1984 is normal...and reading that book would clearly show them otherwise. There is so many of the scenarios described in that book that are already here....and that is definitely not a good thing. It alarms me that so many people are oblivious to it.
It reminds me of the control I escaped when I left the organization. I now find it in government, and it makes me want to scream! I think as an adult I have the right to make decisions that affect my own life. I resent a government that thinks they know what's best for me. They don't. I think we all learn by making mistakes. When you take that away from a person, you limit their ability to grow.
I'm 55 years old (shhhhh...don't tell anyone) and I've learned a lot along the way. I fear for my grandchildren's futures. I want them to have the freedom to make mistakes...to run and fall...and get up and try harder. I want them to learn from failure as well as success. I want them to be self sufficient and lead productive lives using the intellect they are blessed with. I hope with all my heart that it is not too late for that.

this will be raising it's ugly head in the next few years with my kids unless we're out by then.
so, did anyone attend their senior prom while still a jw?
were they a jw too?
I went to both my junior and senior proms. My senior one was cool because my best friend (a jw then xjw now who is still my best friend) and I double dated with jw twins. They were older and showed up in black tie and tails... We really made quite an entrance..., and the next school day every girl in my class came up to ask where did we ever find them. They went ga ga over them... I think they are both still in...last I heard they were very successful. Not your typical jws....
There were no repercussions. My dad was on the committee (this was before the elder arrangement) and I went with his blessing.

i've heard this been said before that when you have had loads to drink and when your inhibitions are temporarily removed then the real you is exposed.
i.e:.
some people when they've got a skinfull they might start talking about money & bragg about personal financial achievements and how much more money they're going to earn.. some people after a few beers suddenly think they're rocky balboa and think they can take the world on.. others after sinking some g & t's might turn into a crazed sexual tyrannosaurus!!.
I just get really sleepy...

ninja, I will ask him...in fact, if anyone else has questions you'd like me to ask list them here and I'll bring the list with me. Should be an interesting conversation.
shawn10538 I think you are over reacting. Funky derek was just answering you point by point. Your response to him in any event was far harsher than his toward you. Lighten up! It's an interesting topic... we can all learn something here.

It just dawned on me that I have the perfect expert to discuss this with. This Wednesday I'm attending a monthly dinner meeting of CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) There are a lot of engineers and architects and spec writers in who attend every month. Usually at my table is an engineer who works for a company who does forensic diagnosis of structural failure. It's his company's job to determime what caused the building to fall...the bridge to collapse....tunnel to leak...etc. They do work all over the country, and it wouldn't surprise me if they were actually called in to do their thing on the World Trade Center . I'll get his input..should be fascinating...and let you know what he says.
