  What I am most ashamed of.........

  is not giving to charity while a jw.

  this whole 'lets sit back and wait for jehovah to sort the world out while we do nothing' really gets to me.

  there is so much to be done in this world, so many people doing good things but the jws just say bang on doors and sell watchtowers.. i did plenty of voluntary work in the jws pioneering my youth away but it was all so useless, now i do voluntary work to help people who want to be helped, as well as my job.

  Xanthippe, Dad died of kidney failure in 1978. Mom died a year earlier of a rare form of cancer.

  My mom, a jw learned this lesson when my dad developed kidney failure. Before that, her pat answer to anyone who asked for a donation, would be that all of our family resources went to the world wide preaching work.

  When my dad got really sick and was put on dialysis, she found out that the Kidney Foundation was picking up the tab for everything that wasn't covered by his insurance. She was dumbfounded that a 'worldly organization" would contribute to the medical treatment of someone they didn't even know.

  The next time she was asked to collect for a charity, she was out pounding the pavement for donations.

  does anybody remember the old apostate guy they called mr. coffee?

  back in the late 80s when i was at brooklyn he would dress in a suit, have a book bag, and come and stand in front of the 124 bldg or sometimes over by the towers hotel.

  he'd easily put in auxillary pioneer hours.

  I'm not sure if it's the same guy... but Billy Norris, from my congregation in Hyde Park, MA was jilted by a bethelite woman, and she married someone else at Bethel (I think.... it happened when I was a kid) Anyway, it put him over the edge, and he moved to NY and picketed Bethel for years. I think he was there during the late 60s...and through the 70s...probably into the 80s.

  my elder buddy and i would frequent strip clubs when we wanted to.. a few friends knew i enjoyed clubbing and music concerts and i seldom ever spoke of my private social life to others.. i know many jws, including elders, that drank excessively but that wasn't considered too big a deal..

  In High School I dated a couple of worldly guys.... and my parents never found out. I still don't know how i got away with that.... I was an only child...so I usually didn't get away with much.

  My take on current direction of WTBS

  after keeping up with the changes and new practices of the "org" one thing seems clear to me: the wtbs is looking at getting out of the religion business.

  it seems running a worldwide religious organization is becoming too much of a legal liability especially when relying on uneducated and poorly trained men to run said organization.

  look at the quagmire, the catholic church suffered with the child abuse scandal and this was a much larger and educated group of people.. that being said, i see the wtbs retreating back from being the head of the religion and moving back towards simply being a publishing company.

  I doubt the GB could stomach giving up ANY control. They'd see it burned to the ground before that happened.

  The GB is only a figurehead these days. The real power is now in the Legal Dept.

  i remember not being allowed to go to sleep in the meetings when i was tired.

  Fear works short-term, but it's only because of the instinct of self-preservation. Fear does not motivate from the heart.

  This is what woke up my best friend. She left long before I did. She said she realized that the only reason she remained in the org. was fear. She said that's no way to live...and left...and never looked back.
