So, why did I meet with the elders?
by lola28 inthis is my explanation as to why i met with the elders today.
when i agreed to meet with the elders last week i had made up my mind to just go in and be honest with them.
i was going to tell the elders that i no longer believed this to be the truth, and then i was just going to walk away.

Lola, it sounds like you did great to me. You are no longer doing what other people think you should do - You are deciding based on what you think is right. I could only wish that everybody could make that much progress. All my best to you.

Good luck, bro. I wished I lived closer so I could help by offering you a room. If you ever come to Phoenix, though - you're covered man.
I personally like the "finger" picture. I would love to see a video of you holding your middle finger up through the entire judicial meeting.

For example, recently I posted about my close friend who killed himself. He was da'd. At opportune times, since people keep bringing up the memorial right now, I have been asking witnesses close to me if they think Jesus ransom sacrifice applies to my friend. I ask with all apparent sincerity, and I have not gotten anything but bewilderment. I can tell that no-one knows how to answer. Then I just drop it and hope that they will start unraveling things for themselves.

I agree with the thinking that they will be cracking down on fading/inactive ones. It seems to me that the society would see faders as a huge threat (and that's no slam to all of you da'd and df'd - I'm your biggest fan!!!). For one, although it happens sometimes, witnesses aren't really supposed to shun an inactive person, so a fader has huge opportunities to spread doubt. They can talk to any witness they want, and the witness has no reason not to talk to them. A fader could insidiously be planting little doubts all over the place under the guise of earnestly "trying to understand".
But that's just a hypothetical - (coughs)

Lost Light is right. I can see how it would sound weird to someone who has not been on the inside, but having a goatee in the kingdom hall is like showing up at a black panther party wearing a white sheet. It has such a huge stigma that it's hard to explain. I personally have a goatee, sideburns that go way below my earlobes, and my hair is at least twice as long as anyone at the hall, so believe me the witnesses see me as "bad association".

Well after much agonizing I decided to go to memorial with my wife. But, we went to a hall on the other side of town where we didn't know anybody. I had my goatee going full force. I also brought my buddy who has been inactive for over 10 years. He also had a goatee (he grew it for the occasion)and wore jeans and a casual shirt.
We walked in early and sat in the back row in the back room. We had a barrage of people, mostly middle aged sisters, come up and question us: "So, you guys are......(long pause waiting for us to fill in the blanks).......visiting?"
My wife would say, "Yes." and just smile. Then, "Visiting from................?"
My friend would say "Phoenix." (That's where we live; it's also where we were at for memorial, so it sounded extremely sarcastic. I wanted to answer, "visiting from EARTH", but my wife wanted me to to keep it at least slightly toned down.)
This resulted in many long, uncomfortable silences which we refused to break. It was fun.
The best part was afterwards when we went to Applebees - We were surrounded by tables of witnesses. My friend and I ordered a shot and a beer. We raised the shots high and clinked them loudly in a toast before downing them. If stares were dollars, I would be rich today. The funniest part to me was that when we walked past witnesses in Applebees, they would smile at my wife but then refused to smile at me or my friend, even though we made a point to smile and wave at them.
Good times.
