Cult Watch 10 Points to look out for in your group members
Obsession about group or the leader putting it above most other considerations.
Member?s individual identity becomes increasingly fused with the group, the leader and/or God followed by the group.Cloning of the group members or leader?s personal behaviors.
Emotional overreaction when the group or leader is criticized. Seen as evil persecution.
Belief that the group is "THE WAY" and they have a mission
Increasing dependency upon the group or leader for problem solving, explanations, definitions and analysis, and corresponding decline in real, independent thought.
Excessive hyperactivity and work for the group or leader, at the expense of private or family interests. Drifting away from family and old friends
Preparedness to blindly follow the group or leader and defend actions or statements without seeking independent verification.
Demonization of former members or members of alternative groups.
Desire to be praised for doing the right thing and fear of public rebuke
Unhealthy wish to be seen with or aligned publicly with the leader(s) of the group
Cult Leaders 5 Points to look out for in your group leader
Authoritarian approach and intolerance of questioning or criticism. Lies about and insults opponents.
Leader shows anxiety about the world, speaking of threats or conspiracies against the group.
Leader regularly accuses dissatisfied members who leave of having something wrong with them, having personality disorders or being transgressor and deserters.
Ex-members have similar stories of abuse and ill-treatment by the leader(s).
The group/leader is always right and followers never feel they can be "good enough" .

conversely, i really would like to know what the younger ones here think are the must -hear songs for every generation.
without my daughters in my life, i don't get to hear the better offerings of the new artists.

i'm sick of my job, sick of the city i'm living in, sick of most of the people who surround me daily.
like a lot of folks here, i was "encouraged to find education within jah's service" discouraged from seeking further education whilst being raised in the troof.
were it up to my father, i probably wouldn't have been permitted to attend regular public school, grades k through 12, much less college---education was that much maligned in my family.

for what it's worth: even after I left JWs I continued making a living as a cleaning contractor, pulling in a gross income of between 24,000 and 33,000 annually depending on how hard I went at drumming up business. In 1990 at age 37 I decided to go to college. It was tough, but it was also exciting. I was a single parent with two teenagers living with me. I worked fulltime, evenings and weekends, stocking and sacking groceries at a local grocery store, because that was the only job I could find that would work around normal college scheduling.
After I finished college, I started on my chosen career path. I had to start at the bottom, of course, in spite of my age, but I worked my way up. Now I'm doing something I chose to do because I love doing it, and I'm doing it for more money than I ever imagined I would be making, back when I was steaming carpets and emptying wastebaskets.

for me it was a whole combination of things, not one specific incident, and it was gradual.

"God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. An excellent example of how a very simple melody embellished with sentimental lyrics and outstanding vocals can become a classic.
Two comments: first, from the Beach Boys' reportoire, I feel that "Little Surfer Girl" is far superior to "God Only Knows" both melodically and vocally. As for the lyrics, well, that's the second comment.
"God Only Knows" reflects a stereotypical lover's stance in which the speaker asserts that all his being is wrapped up in the other person, without whom he would be nothing. Now, seriously... who wants a lover whose sole means of existence is parasitically sucking your energy, living vicariously through you, who brings nothing to the relationship other than fawning worship?
"If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me?
God only knows what I'd be without you"
Actually, the intent of this posturing is not to declare the depth of one's love for the other person, but rather to establish an obligation on the part of the recipient: "My heart is in your hands; my life is dependent on you." Uh... no, thanks. I want a lover who is a whole person independently of me or anyone else; someone who is already enjoying life by herself and simply finds added pleasure in my company.
As for the lyrics to "Little Surfer Girl"-- I've always wanted to change that one section from

Everywhere I go"
to...

anyway, i have a new room mate @ my university now.
it's my fourth one in less than a full year (i think).
how do I get her to shut up? Or just leave me alone on the religious issue?
Have you considered either, "Shut up" or "Just leave me alone on this religious issue"?
