joe134cd: The fact that it is easy to find out about JW culture is important as highlighted in your post. This is why I get concerned by a ever increasing pervasive idea taught and practised in schools, the press and increasingly in the work place - the idea of 'respect'. I do have a big problem when we are asked to 'show respect' for ideas or philosophies that do not deserve it. IMHO it's important that the TTATT especially not be tainted by the faux respect we are all asked to show.

Skills Gap

on a personal level i have seen many of the perceivably intelligent younger members of congregations leave.

In my experience many of the congregation elders where I grew up did come across as being quite intelligent. We had a journalist, dentist, logistics expert, civil servant, engineer and even some of the other less qualified elders were pretty accomplished public speakers with a very good knowledge of the NWT. Maybe this was an exception to the rule! -

The JWs have now been discouraging higher education and critical thinking for a long time. We have all seen the 'dumbing down' of the WT literature. On a personal level I have seen many of the perceivably intelligent younger members of congregations leave. Pursuing a decent career is frowned upon.
Studies have show the low economic status of JWs... it seems the jokes about "window washers" could be accurate (eg. http://users.adam.com.au/bstett/JwSocioeconomic86.htm)
It seems to me that such a large organisation needs many highly skilled and very intelligent people to survive. Perhaps it will be this ever increasing skill gap that leads to the downfall of the WTBS?
Increasingly when I meet the odd witness out and about they seem almost incapable of holding a sensible discussion, often do not know much about current doctrine, much less able to understand views counter to their own (especially from an atheist perspective). Without attempting to create a flame war... IMHO the older generation (in the traditional sense, not WT current light) just seem more intelligent and in my experience the younger JW's seem often to be a little slow? (Apologies for the wide sweeping generalisation).
I would say the knowledge of the average member in the 90's when I was a teenager was greater. Would people agree with that?
Surely there will come a point where the WTBS will need to use more and more 'worldy' organisations for support? Copy writers, solicitors, architects, logistics experts, etc... etc... do we have any evidence for this?

What is the basis for authority for the governing body?
by Half banana ina word to jehovahs witnesses: what is the basis for the authority the seven members of the governing body can claim in controlling the lives of eight million followers?
the organisation they represent has never got one useful piece of information correct in one hundred and thirty five years... so why should they be believed?.

I would expect the FDS just directly asked big G if they have the authority?
Exodus 28:30, “Also put the Urim and the Thummin in the breastpiece, so they may be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord.”

by abiather in[i have some posting problems from my computerreply portion gets hung, hence giving it here].
when i posted the cancer healingusing emotions, it is given as just a link with no recommendation, nor with any comments from me.
it is not presented as a sure cure for the cancer-patient.

Stop making excuses.
Your recommendation and comment was the topic title "Cancer healing—using emotions (watch this video)" and you should take responsibility for that rather than for the shame faced prancing around you are engaged in now.

Pick your belief system
by Giordano ini think we've all noticed a ton of newbe's these past months.
one part of escaping or thinking about escaping the jw's is coming to terms with what you believe now and/or what direction you are leaning towards.. here is a site that has a quick quiz that may be of some worth or just for fun.
i took it when i first signed on here and the results surprised me because it was pretty accurate.. you don't have to sign up for anything and when you finish you will get a percentage answer on 20 major belief systems.

IMO this thread should be removed and you should be banned. Offering this type of false hope to people suffering from cancer is sickening and you should be ashamed.
You have crossed the line.

Methane-Based Life Forms Could Exist on Titan (the giant moon of Saturn), say Scientists
by abiather inliquid water is a requirement for life on earth.
but in other, much colder worlds, life might exist beyond the bounds of water-based chemistry.
cornell chemical engineers and astronomers offer a template for life that could thrive in a harsh, cold world specifically titan, the giant moon of saturn.

abiather : The only answer we can give to them is that ‘you take up your own moon-mission.’
Here is a different answer...

So are you admitting?:
- Your view on what happens during meditation is unprovable and potentially just an hallucination?
- You think you are connected to god, but perhaps you are in fact just engaged in a kind of spiritual masturbation in your own head?
- Your view on meditation is no more valid that others' that practise.
- What is 'true' does really matter and providing evidence for your beliefs is unimportant.

Evolution - Myths and Evidence
by maksutov ini have nearly finished writing my 'apostate' book, which i will soon be publishing as a free e-book.
here is an excerpt from it on the subject of evolution and the misconceptions about it held by jws.
sorry it's a bit long, but i would appreciate any feedback.
