Hi Blondie and the_classicist, Thanks for taking the time to reply! As far as BC goes, the only other locations I can recall that might be applicable for people in the Pacific Northwest would be Nanaimo and Kamloops, and Kamloops is probably 4 or 5 hours away from Vancouver, while Nanaimo is a 2-hour ferry trip (or similar drive for the folks in Victoria). comment

WTS vs Quotes: Requiem for a Research Web Site
by Quotes inin compliance with the terms of a settlement agreement, my information and research web site, http://quotes.watchtower.ca, is now "dark".
the domain "watchtower.ca" has been transferred to wts (i assume they will have it pointing to borg.org watchtower.org asap).
my copies of the site have been destroyed, the files deleted, and my wt library cd has been destroyed, in accordance with the settlement agreement which will afford a "discontinuance" of their suit against me.

I am surprised that no one in this thread has mentioned the Internet Wayback Machine, which is an extremely useful research tool: http://www.archive.org/ Let the reader use discernment! ;) comment

Telling someone you've known a long time that you were a JW
by comment intonight i was out having dinner with a friend/colleague i've known for five or six years.
the conversation turned to religion: first religion in politics, then his general distaste for religion, and then his lack of a religious upbringing.
there was a lull for a moment, and then i said "it was pretty much the reverse situation in my household.

Tonight I was out having dinner with a friend/colleague I've known for five or six years. The conversation turned to religion: first religion in politics, then his general distaste for religion, and then his lack of a religious upbringing. There was a lull for a moment, and then I said "it was pretty much the reverse situation in my household." And I told him I'd been raised as a JW. In fact, I'm still "technically one", as I'm baptized and haven't been disfellowshipped, just inactive for years. Telling him honestly made me feel really weird, because I've almost uniformly avoided telling any of my "post-JW" acquaintances about my JW upbringing. Now I'm kind of wondering if I did the right thing. He knew about the 144,000 and about family members not talking to you if you get disfellowshipped, stuff like that. I told him I'd really prefer it if he didn't talk about it with other people. But since, as I said, I usually tend to keep my personal life very close to the vest, it just feels weird. He's a good guy, very laid-back. He actually started laughing when he considered how some of my career choices might not jive too well with a JW background. I'm not sure what's bugging me, whether it's the possibility that he's going to look at me differently now, or that he could bring up this information sometime in an inconvenient social context (i.e. in front of Witnesses), even though I don't think we're ever actually around Witnesses together. What's been your experience in this area?

Wedding-related dilemma: help appreciated

I received a phone call from an old non-Witness friend tonight. He's just proposed to his girlfriend and they're getting married next summer. She is Catholic; he is agnostic. They're getting married in a Catholic church, with some sort of "moderate Catholic" ceremony.
He has invited me to be one of his groomsmen.
My situation is that I was raised as a Witness but have been inactive for several years (no field service and no meetings or conventions except occasionally in the company of my family, to please them--I live away from home). The wedding will take place in my hometown, where my family lives. It's a fairly big town but not huge (i.e. you do run into people you know there quite frequently).
I told him that in and of itself, I would be perfectly happy to do that for him, and it's an honor that he asked me. But I don't want to run the risk of being disfellowshipped for it, and I don't want to create unnecessary friction with my family--I have quite a good relationship with them considering that I've stopped participating in Witness activities (they are all still "wholehearted servants of Jehovah").
I can't locate my Watchtower CD-ROM. Could somebody please look up whatever references the Society has made on the point of participating in non-Witness marriage ceremonies? If they've loosened up on anything in recent years that I may have missed, do bring that up. I have honestly never been to a non-Witness ceremony in a church before, although I have attended wedding receptions.
No doubt some of you will say that it's my life and I should do what I want and damn the consequences, but I've decided that this is what's preferable for me. I want to keep my relationship with my family, and if that means the odd meeting or convention, so be it, even if I disagree with 90% of what's being said. And I don't want this situation to cause complications either.
I would also appreciate tips and experiences from anyone else who has been asked to participate (esp. as a groomsman) in a non-Witness ceremony in their post-Witness life.

Update from Ray Franz
by Amazing inlast night, after my post regarding ray franz comments of bill bowen's posted statements, i received a good number of email and phone calls.
one item consistently surfaced regarding ray's assignment to write the chapter in the book, organization for kingdom preaching and disciple-making, by the title of safeguarding the cleanness of the congregation.
in the chapter, the "two witness" rule was outlined.
