  In a village where the great Zen master Hakuin was living, a girl became pregnant. Her father bullied her for the name of her lover and, in the end, to escape punishment she told him it was Hakuin. The father said no more, but when the time came and the child was born, he at once took the baby to Hakuin and threw it down. "It seems that this is your child," he said, and he piled on every insult and sneer at the disgrace of the affair.
  
  Hakuin only said, "Oh, is that so?" and took the baby in his arms. Wherever he went thereafter, he took the baby, wrapped in the sleeve of his ragged robe. During rainy days and stormy nights he would go out to beg milk from the neighboring houses. Many of his disciples, considering him fallen, turned against him and left. And Hakuin said not a word.
  
  Meantime, the mother found she could not bear the agony of separation from her child. She confessed the name of the real father, and her own father rushed to Hakuin and prostrated himself, begging over and over for forgiveness. Hakuin said only, "Oh, is that so?" and gave him the child back.
  
  For the ordinary man what others say matters too much, because he has nothing of his own. Whatever he thinks he is, is just a collection of opinions of other people. Somebody has said, "You are beautiful," somebody has said, "You are intelligent, " and he has been collecting all these. Hence he's always afraid: he should not behave in such a way that he loses his reputation, respectability. He is always afraid of public opinion, what people will say, because all that he knows about himself is what people have said about him. If they take it back, they leave him naked. Then he does not know who he is, ugly, beautiful, intelligent, unintelligent. He has no idea, even vaguely, of his own being; he depends on others.
  
  But the man of meditation has no need of others' opinions. He knows himself, so it does not matter what others say. Even if the whole world says something that goes against his own experience, he will simply laugh. At the most, that can be the only response. But he is not going to take any step to change people's opinion. Who are they? They don't know themselves and they are trying to label him. He will reject labeling. He will simply say, "Whatever I am, I am, and this is the way I am going to be."

  Proving JW's got Jehovah's blessing in 1919. Difficult? Please Help

  watkins: think about it, oompa --- just because they claim it's the only true religion doesn't make it so.

  i'd say the proof shows otherwise.

  for god to remove his blessing, he would've first had to have bestowed it.

  Since I am now on the outside looking in, I can be a little more objective on this.
  
  I believe that they had a very brief period (up to a few years) when they first started out, during which the organized was composed of sincere individuals searching for truth. It quickly morphed into a business entity who sought to control members by various levels of bureaucracy.
  
  To this day, there are still some sincere individuals in the organization, but the result is still the same -- no blessing as the True Religion. There is too much evidence to the contrary (lying about various scandals, etc.) The True Religion does not have to lie about anything.

  Getting your car ready for winter

  any sugestions?

  ?i just got a car in march and this will be my first winter driving it.i know i need a snow brush but those are pretty common around here.. anything i should do to the car it's self?

  When Elders go too Far...

  this is just something that really peed me off regarding the elders, is how low they are sinking to get gossip and stuff now, i was in contact with a well trusted friend of mine who used to attend meetings up until 2 years ago, his wife is still in the jw org, he was having a joke around on some text messages with me regarding my man saying "try before you buy" and so on, which i found amusing....lets just say his wife didnt...she snooped on his phone, wrote out the texts he had sent me and gave the transcript to the elders, and now he has to go before a judicial commitee.

  how wrong is that, for a start its an invasion of privacy!

  i was fuming yesterday when i found out.

  DID YOU MARK PEOPLE WHILE GOING DOOR TO DOOR?

  did you receive your invisible (x) mark on your forehead?

  the message is clear with the wtbts and their many pictures with someone studying, getting baptized, and going door to door with another picture that shows someone getting their x written on their forehead.

  jehovah's witnesses think they are the middle man marking people to righteousness only if you join the organization.

  had a new to me explanation of something i've questioned about matt 24:45-47. i, along with some here, wondered why the "slave" in matthew is singular when the wtbts says it has to be a "class" because no one person could live long enough to be the slave.

  personally, i've wondered why it couldn't be each person individually, but the d.o.

  says there is precedent.

  take a look at most religions: if you change a doctrine here or there, it usually makes little difference.. you can be a catholic and take birth control.

  you can believe in evolution and still be active in most.

  protestant churches.. but what about the "truth"?

  I sincerely loved what I called Jehovah, and loved what his Son did for me, and was willing to throw my lot in with the Jehovahs (*smile*), so I was not pressured at all.
  
  Fast forward to the time when the lies started surfacing, and I redirected my expressions of spirituality and search for real truth.

  i so loved the post of the kitten the other day.

  i checked-out this week and drank three bottles of gin, even though i stopped in toto four months ago, my wife is out of town.

  please do not post anything about counseling here as i have tried that and am on lots of meds.
