What I find ironic, as well as unsettling with regard to discussing this subject with ex-JWs, is that these "outsiders" are objective and analytical, and they refrain from name-calling.

On the contrary compound, I don't find these investigators objective or analytical, at least not in a rigorous manner. As a behavioral scientist-in-training, I have to do everything I can to prove my null hypothesis, or in other words, to prove myself wrong. That's one reason why science is science. These people make no attempt whatsoever to show themselves wrong, or to do honest investigation, since their analysis is only confirmatory. What they see is what they are looking for.

there was another thread that got a little derailed by arguments between gun-owners and non-gun-owners, but i'd like to continue the discussion of a single topic (without rantings on gun control, please):.

do you carry a firearm while in backcountry?

either 4-wheeling, backpacking, or doing ranch-related work, etc?

One time my wife and I were hiking on a trail in a National Park when all the sudden we came upon two bear cubs who were scrambling through some shrubs about three feet off the trail to our left. In order to proceed back down the mountain, we had to pass the cubs. We didn't see the mama bear anywhere. Needless to say, I was scared shitless. My wife, on the other hand, stupidly paused and tried to get a closer look. I was absolutely furious with her.

I don't know if there would have been any way to make that situation more safe, other than turning back around the way we came and waiting a while. The trail was very narrow, and there was no way off the trail due to a rock wall on our right and the river embankment to our left (down which the cubs were scrambling). I don't know if a firearm would have potentially ameliorated the situation if the mom bear was present... I doubt it. But situations like these do alert you to the fact that no one wants to be more helpless than they already are.

Well, now that i know to LOOK FOR A FACE, I can defintely see one. Thanks for giving me the encouragement to "be my own judge" on that. However, I fail to see Zeus. It actually looks more like the homeless man on the street downstairs from my office.

Do you carry a firearm while in backcountry? either 4-wheeling, backpacking, or doing ranch-related work, etc? Why or why not? Do you think it's effective to carry a firearm for defense against animal predators? In many backcountry areas, carrying a firearm is illegal (National Parks), while it is legal to hunt in National Forest and Wilderness, to the best of my knowledge. (Required hunting liscense?)

Thoughts?

Read the book before commenting on this issue. If you already have, then offer up a rebuttal wherein you find DB to be incorrect in his findings. You, likewise, might be interested to discover what measures were taken by the Society against Mr. Barefoot and his family.

With all due respect, I don't have to read the book before commenting about subliminal messages in the Watchtower and Awake magazines. i just have to read the following posted on "kool-aid man's" website:

If you look closely, you will see a face. In fact, after I've given you the suggestion, it's nearly impossible to NOT see a face.

kool-aid man: Do you make no differentiation between sensational, fake stories, and those that might actually be legitimate? We have enough DIRT on the WTS and GB to not employ dumb stories about subliminal messages in the magazines.

You're a perfect example for JWs to use as the "raving mad apostate." Thanks for devaluing everything we try to do with your dumbass conference calls.

Hiking and Trail Safety tips...

i've done quite a bit of hiking on mountain trails, semi-arid prairie trails, and desert trails... i'd like to pass along a few tips for survival.... first and foremost!!!

i've seen so many people blundering down the local trails with music blaring in their ears, 'bluetooth' hands' free phones in their ears, and so on.... these people are just asking to be taken down by some sort of predator.

the first time i was stalked by a cougar, my ears alerted me to the fact i was in danger!!

Phrases NOT to say if you are in a judicial committee meeting for apostasy

i have only been on a couple of committee's for actual apostasy, and in one the brother never showed, and in the other, the person said they don't want to be a witness.

but in having experience as an elder and a c.o., and in reading this forum, here are my suggestions.. do not say:.

"i don't believe that the faithful and discreet slave is god's channel" - why not?

Convention attire...sloppy bum or dressed to impress

a comment was made on another thread about how sloppy some jws dress at conventions.

instead of hi-jacking that thread, i thought i'd start a new one on the subject.. i always noticed that there seemed to be two, opposite directions of how jw men dressed at conventions...and in general.

and i'm speaking more of the married with children jw male...not the young, on the prowl, horny dub male in search of his female counterpart.

You see the worst dress styles at JW conventions. And you're right, undercover, it's either that they're sloppy, or they're trying too hard. To illustrate:

Brother Witness A:

Cheap black slacks, white shirt all puffy around the sides, tie too long, black chunky shoes, limp jacket slung over shoulder for use as a pillow in the afternoon session.

Brother Witness B:

Three-piece suit (from Burlington Coat Factory) with gaudy wide pin stripes, colorful tie with matching ascot behind lapel, gold tie clip, colored-leather shoes polished the night before, hair slicked back with Alberto VO5, nasty cologne.

Real sophistication is not to be found. Even if a brother is wealthy, he will likely be dressing like he's never worn a suit in his life. The only ones who dress decently are those who are in business and dress on the job.

i'm thinking of going to one this summer to research an article i want to write.

back in my time anybody could just walk in, but some recent threads sound like that might be hard to do.

i'm also going to try to get a local paper to give me one time press credentials.

Thomas Covenant's Mrs was given some grief by an attendant for not wearing a badge at a DC a year or two ago. She went totally balistic on him by the way.

Probably a kid who took his new job too seriously.
