  Isn't the light supposed to be getting brighter?

  ask any jw about the flip-flops in doctrine, and within a few moments, you'll be hearing about proverbs 4:18, the one about the "path getting brighter".

  i.e., "our understanding has increased, so we had to make an adjustment.".

  i was just thinking about the last major changes in jw doctrine over the past dozen years or so...does this sound like light getting "brighter"?.

  Hi sir82,

  It seems to me that the light is fading for the jws.

  The changes they made re blood doctrine, generation etc are so nonsensical now that even the most knowledgable jws aren't sure what the teachings are. The generation doctrine was set in stone up to 1995, for example - those who could remember 1914 would still be alive when the new system came. Now the teaching is completely ambiguous, with no definite time period when these things may come to pass.

  I imagine that any further changes they are forced to make as time runs out on their predictions will be similarly meaningless.

  Memorial 'Holiday"?

  if the dub's don't believe in celebrating holidays, what makes the memorial different?.

  The memorial, the passing of the bread and wine is mentioned in the bible that is why it is acknowledged. It is not something that started with pagean customs, symbols or whatever, but it has scriptual backing that is what makes it different.

  Where does the jw memorial, with only the so-called anointed having the right to partake, have scriptural backing? Please don't point to the scripture about the little flock and other sheep either, only the jws interpret that to mean there will be two classes of christians.

  Jesue told his followers., meaning all christians, to partake of the bread and wine in memory of him. He didn't limit the number of people who would be allowed to do that. The jw memorial is an insult to jesus sacrifice, not a "memorial" of it.

  I am not a christian by the way.

  Some of your comebacks are so stupid.

  In what way do you think some peoples expressed opinions are stupid? Please enlighten us. BR25.

  Altering reality where do you stand......

  to fill you in and explain my post....... i was raised as a jw but left (not baptised) at 16. i started studying again at 24ish and was quickly baptised and got disfellowshipped aged about 32ish.

  whilst i was active as a jw i socialised plenty, but it did not involve copious amounts of drink or drugs.

  during my times out i have very very occasionally smoked a little dope and have been drunk more often but by no means frequently.

  Hi fifi,

  I enjoy a few glasses of wine myself, and I have smoked since I left the jws, not the best idea really.

  To me, it's common sense to practice moderation in pastimes like drinking. Maybe your jw days do influence you a little, but you are wise to not get caught up in heavy drinking and use of dope. Things like that used in moderation can be very enjoyable, but overuse is potentially dangerous healthwise.

  Holidays

  i am a former jw, but i still believe what they do about the holidays?

  i have already talked about origins and all that stuff so i wanted to ask something without bringing up scriptual or historical backgrounds for a change.. my question is (whatever your beliefs may be) what % of people who celebrate christmas, if you took the presents out of christmas would still acknowledge christmas as much as they do now?

  I enjoy Christmas, not just for the presents but for the time off work, and opportunity to spend time with my loved ones. It would, however, probably be less of a celebration for me without the gift giving.

  I'm an atheist, so the idea of celebrating Jesus birth is not on my list of priorities.

  No matter what your religion is, you should take origins into consideration. So jws dont celebrate holidays? Big deal. there is nothing great about how most holidays began, and there is no scriptual backing so what is the big deal

  Why should we? Why not just enjoy the event?

  Since leaving the watchtower, I've really enjoyed celebrating hoildays like Christmas especially, and Easter to a lesser degree. I couldn't care less where these holidays originate from, or whether there is any scriptural backing for them. I'll leave killjoys like the jws to worry about stuff like that.

  Had The Big Chat with my wife...

  after being a long time fader and lurking here for a few years i finally had the courage to speak to my wife the other day

  she was complaining about how we never get invited back to other jw's houses despite being fairly hospitable ourselves and how she's made some new worldly friends that werre non-judgemental and just nice people.

  she also mentioned her mum (also jw but weak - split up from her jw husband) was struggling with the routine and had lots of nice friends out of the kh.

  I'm ok with it.

  In many ways, what I've written here charts my progress away from the watchtower over the last 18 months, so it's good to look back sometimes and see how far I've come in that time.
