Why did the Early Church Accept the Four NT Gospels and Reject the Gnostic Gospels?
by Christ Alone inthis has been a subject that has been explored by many secular scholars today.
bart ehrman is one of them.
the divinci code had this to say about why the gospels were chosen:.

What do you mean by "early church"? Circa 300 CE?

Besse Cooper, world's oldest person, dies at 116
by 00DAD inbesse cooper, the oldest verified living person, died yesterday at 116 years old.
you can read the yahoo news story.
as a problem for wt "theology", there are currently only about 70 supercentenarians, that is people still alive over the age of 110.. there are now only six people still alive that are 113 years old or older.

You meant 17 in 1914, right 00DAD?
But EXACTLY RIGHT - this prophecy was obviously busted decades ago and their overlapping generation crap just made it more ridiculous.

Voynich Manuscript
by XPeterX inthe voynich manuscript, described as "the world's most mysterious manuscript",is a work which dates to the early 15th century, possibly from northern italy.
it is named after the book dealer wilfrid voynich, who purchased it in 1912.. some pages are missing, but the current version comprises about 240 vellum pages, most with illustrations.
much of the manuscript resembles herbal manuscripts of the 1500s, seeming to present illustrations and information about plants and their possible uses for medical purposes.

We only have about two weeks to figure them out, as the calendar runs out on Dec. 21, 2012...

There are now only six people still alive that are 113 years old or older. It won't be long before they'll all be gone.
Evidently, this is what prompted their change to an "Overlapping Generation" as the explanation for what Jesus meant.
And even more difficulty - I will lay you odds that NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM is a JW...who was an adult Russellite in 1914...

Stronger Christian presence on JWN?
by Christ Alone ini've only been a member here for a short time, but it seems like there are more christians on the board lately.
for the first few months that i was on jwn, it appeared that there were very few that argued in favor of a creator and belief in the bible in particular.
there seems to be several more that have recently joined...or at least posted more regularly regarding belief.

I know we have some New Agers here too, but I don't think I've ever seen a Buddhist post here...
I occasionally make one which is pro-Buddhist. (I am agnostic) My lady is a lifelong Buddhist, and I think the religion has much to recommend it.

Let me get this straight about the FDS latest thinking
by wha happened? inso the fds does not include the apostles.
what part of the gospels aren't food at the proper time?
or am i just mixed up on who the fds are..
-
james_woods
No, the apostles aren't included. Matthew 24:45, rather than just being a parable, was actually a prophecy about Christ choosing Rutherford and his associates in 1919.
And immediately after being "chosen" - Rutherford & Company falsely prophecied that the final conflict would begin in 1925.
Jesus skipped over the original 12 apostles to pick this bunch - who made a blatantly FALSE PROPHECY within months of being "picked".
Rutherford himslef had to say: "I made an ass out of myself".
It would be laughably pathetic if around 7 million people were not slavishly following this idiocy.

PONDER THAT sometime in the still hours before sunrise.....
by Terry injehovah's witnesses are taught that they are engaged in a life-saving work.
in the louvre is a special vault with 15 miles of shelves containing medical treatises, cures, treatments, speculations, procedures from time immemorial.
now the fascinating aspect of all these state-of-the-art manuals and documents is that they are scientifically bogus!.

And let us never forget that the Watchtower recruiters are VERY adept at finding people with emotional, mental, or social problems and exploiting that condition to make their prisoner-recruits.

Which is best? An EVOLVED or a CREATED human?
by Terry inconsider the implication of being a created human as opposed to an evolved human.. the nature a created human has is given due to intentionality.
the creator wills that nature upon the creature.. .
what escape from nature is there?.

I can't see how you free man from being man. Nature.
We each are born WITH "a" nature. We do not...we cannot...choose THAT.
A gay man is attracted to men-- NOT BY CHOICE. It is in the nature of being homosexual.
But, among the men he is attracted to he makes choices. You see? It is not the same thing at all.
This, I think, is what Einstein meant when he denied absolute "free will".
The illustration of the gay person is perfectly on target - gays again and again will tell you they did not "choose" to be gay. Straights will naturally tell you the same thing.
Now - there may be a measure of free will in whoever a gay or straight person picks as a partner, but how much free will? How much is that also influenced by heredity or environment?
These are all great mysteries.
And, of course, all of this raises deep questions about the mythical "Adam in Eden" and his culpability for eating the fruit of the tree.

1975 For Deniers
by Farkel in1975 for deniers.
most of today's jws were not members in 1975 or in the 9 years prior to 1975, so they were not eyewitnesses to what really went on during that period.
i was a pioneer in that period, and i was an eyewitness to what went on.. those jws who are still active today and who were around in that period will typically say it was the "brothers" who "ran ahead of jehovah" and "read more into" the 1975 prediction than what was actually stated.

The best proof that they whipped everybody up about 1975 and that the JWs felt let down afterwards are the world-wide statistics for the years 1976 through 1979.
There was a sudden and definate downturn in the activity.
