Condolences E-Man. It was a bad day for Anglo football on both sides of the pond. But to reach the quarterfinals is an accomplishment. We Yanks can hold our heads high. We played well, far better than expected.

"My Child is Dead"
by Lee Elder inthis morning we published a very moving story written by a jehovah's witness whose 15-year-old son died supporting the watchtower's society blood policy.
to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time a jw parent has gathered up the courage to face down this monstrous policy after losing their child.
this is a very special person indeed and when we finally gather enough of these folks together and set them in front of the right attorney, the wts will be in for some serious litigation.. at present mary is in the midst of divorce from her jw husband and nailing down a custody agreement, so the identity of her and her son must remain anonymous.

Truly, a huge tragedy. My heart goes out to Mary and the entire family of the young man. Whether or not theyre Watchtower adherents, they must all be feeling a terrible loss. This boy was in the prime of his life.
Lee, you dont explain what prompted Marys divorce (probably for the obvious privacy issues until her divorce is final), but not many marriages survive the loss of a child. In this case, one parent steadfastly follows Watchtower protocol while the other yearns for a way to avoid the inevitable, at first secretly, but with the anguish of the death of ones son, I dont imagine it remained a secret for long. Tragedy upon tragedy. This is really a horrific situation.
Regarding liability/culpability and whether or not this young man would have survived if he had received transfusions, there was a case a couple of years ago in Southern California where a drunk driver hit and killed a Jehovahs Witness woman. This received a lot of news coverage both locally and nationally. There was a piece on 60 Minutes (. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/1998/12/04/national/main24310.shtml).
The woman survived the accident, but refused any transfusions and subsequently died. During the drunk drivers trial, much time was spent arguing whether this man was responsible for the womans death or if she was responsible because she had refused life-saving medical treatment. He was eventually found guilty of manslaughter.
As Lee pointed out, determining whether someone would survive if theyd chosen to be transfused is impossible to say. It all has to do with probabilities. There is the possibility of complications, from the transfusion itself (admittedly very small) and others such as infection.
What is certain, though, is that the Watchtowers policy removes the possibility of life-saving blood transfusions, even when these are the only viable treatment with any possibility of saving the life of someone traumatically injured and bleeding out, or were alternative treatments and bloodless surgery are an impossibility. Much of the world (the part where the Watchtower is making its greatest inroads) does not live with what many in Japan, Europe, the U.S and Canada take for granted. Advanced medical treatments like bloodless surgery or alternative blood products are not even a remote possibility for these people.
I hope that by adding her voice to the chorus of those who have paid the ultimate price for their loyalty to the imperfect men in Brooklyn, Mary can make a difference and that these unnecessary deaths are put to an end.
The even more tragic side to this story is that there will be more Marys, more broken marriages, more suffering and loss, and more innocent lives lost until the Watchtower changes this ignorant and murderous policy.

Larc:
I recently read a book by Joseph Campbell call "Thou are thou" (a compilation of lectures he gave) wherein he talks about the inappropriateness of taking the Bible stories as literal fact and the ease with which one can ridicule those who do. You just proved him right.

E-man:
I'm a Yank, but lived for a couple of years in South America. I have family and friends who are Argentine as well as Brazilian. I have family in Holland whom I've never met as well. On top of that, on my mother's side I've got some Scottish, English and Irish blood. My great, great grandfather was a page in Edinburgh castle. He ran away to sea and came to the North America, made a fortune in Canada (he found gold), pissed it away, made another fortune in the U.S. in oil, which the family has since pissed away.

Yes, it is football. Yes the Argentines and many others play dirty. Yes, Argentines can be pompous and arrogant. No, winning a football match won't solve anybody's problems.
So:
Goooooooooo England!
Cheers,

I dont want to rain on your parade, but Argentina could have used a little good news as of late. For those who dont know, Argentina is in the middle of a huge economic crisis, maybe the worst economic crisis in history. The country is broke. People are going hungry. Those that can get out of the country are doing so in droves, by whatever means at their disposal. And things continue to get worse.
There is fear that if things dont improve soon and/or they dont receive some sort of assistance, their government may collapse and there may be a return to the violent and repressive dictatorships and military juntas of the past. In the past fifty years or so, only one president has completed his term in Argentina. Since last December, Argentina has had five different presidents. The current president, Eduardo Duhalde doesnt enjoy much popular nor political support.
So while I congratulate England on their victory, I feel bad for the Argentines who are in dire need of something to lift their spirits.

Amazing:
Does you head hurt after banging it agianst that wall of ignorance and intolerance?
Sounds like the conversations I've had with my wife, although your knowledge of the Bible is superior to mine. You should know by know the rational arguments don't work in such a confrontational manner. Man, your method of deprogramming is the best I've seen (. http://www.freeminds.org/psych/exithelp.htm).
Anyway, I hope you're recovering well.
Take care,
