My mother retired from her full-time job recently and has started attending meetings again. She also has plenty of time to think about her wayward children, including me. One night, we were talking and she asked me, again, why I wasn't going to meetings. I told her one of my "safe" reasons: how I always felt inadequate as a JW and it stressed me out. Then she began her "motivational" speech:
"What else do you have, other than the meetings? blah, blah, blah. Who else do you have, other than JW's? blah, blah, blah. When D. <my daughter> leaves home, do you think she'll want to spend time with you? Do you think that people you work with care about you? If you don't go to meetings, you'll be destroyed at Armageddon." She took a breath and I replied "Well, if Jehovah wants to do that, I trust his judgment of me." Stunned silence, then a tentative question: "you've given up?".
That was about all the motivation I could stand, so I asked her if she had anything upbuilding to say to me. She answered honestly: "No".
My daughter is a smart cookie. I told her about the conversation and she hit the nail on the head: "Some people need fear to motivate themselves."
How have you/would you reply when being told "You're going die at Armageddon".

This book was actually on display at a local Border's store (!). I skimmed it, found a few funny parts but was not motivated to buy it. I still like the cover though.

Attending college as an active JW

I was attending college for a BS degree when I got baptized in the early 80's. I asked each of the 3 elders (rural congregation) who reviewed the questions with me their opinion and they all said that as long as I was not doing it to get rich, it was ok, because I had to support myself. Others in the congregation tried to point out how meaningful pioneering would be, but not in a pushy or judgmental way. It is interesting to note that when I graduated from HS, I got all sorts of gift from the cong, but when I graduated from college, I only got one gift.

So I've agreed to a Bible Study, how will I get thru it without wanting to die?
by lola28 inno joke.
the sister who studied with me is older and she's been having a very hard time getting around out in service, i heard she was ill so i called her and this morning she came by my office and we started to talk, her kids have all moved away and she's lonely, going out in service is hard for her but she tries her best to get out there, she asked me if i would consider a study with her and i said yes.
i miss her terribly, she's the closest thing i've had to a grandmother and i adore her, also i'd rather she be with me indoors instead of walking around house to house when her legs give her so much trouble.

Hi Lola,
I agree that this is may be dangerous ground you're treading, but if you still believe in God and the Bible, maybe you can ask her if y'all can just read the Bible, maybe suggesting the portion for the Ministry school- so it's helping her to prepare for that. Just discuss what you read.

Recovering,
I was abused as a child and wonder how I'm going to deal with taking care of Mom when she's older, or paying someone to do it if I can afford to. I know that I will do it because it's the right thing to do (for me). I also want to set a good example for my daughter. If I have problems dealing with it, emotionally, I will see a counselor.

My first thought was that she's rude. My second thought was that she's a flake. Next time you talk to her, ask what happened. Maybe there was an emergency or maybe she had a better offer. If she doesn't want to explain, tell her outright that her "behavior" could be perceived as rude.
