  i told my husband last week that i didn't plan on going to chats or forums.

  we've been trying very hard to stay on neutral ground.

  we began by just researching all the history of jws and turning to the publications published by the society, to either back the history we were reading, or to dispel it.

  Me and my wife kind of did the fast fade. I was really sick and stopped going to meetings while she went a couple of times and when I was better I told my wife, I'm not going back and she said, ok. We got a visit from a couple of elders once but we were HBH and they have bothered us less and less over the years. The thing that hurts though is My wife's sister is only 15 and her mom limits their association even though they are really close. But considering some of the sories I've read, I'd consider us lucky.

  I'd just want to encourage you guys that you are doing the right thing for your immediate family. Your witness family may shun you, but hopefully some of them are less rigid.

  IS THIS A HEALING PLACE?

  many come to this board with wounds from the past in the jdub dom.

  sometimes this place just pours salt in these wounds, attacking peoples character and support groups that people seek refuge.

  (ie silent lambs) im sure in disgust many have vacated the board.

  i'm just 'stopping by briefly' lol to wish happy holidays to old friends who may still be posting/lurking here...so many of you come to my mind on a regular basis, things you've said long ago continue to return to me when i need them and keep me going in a strong, forward direction.

  my family continues to be amazed by the fact that four and a half years after my df'ing, i still haven't caved in and gone back.

  for me, there is no going back.

  these attitudes are HARDLY exclusive to JW's. I think you can effectively replace JW with U.S. and it would be just as accurate.

  True, but I have never seen physical discipline so STRESSED outside of the organization. In fact, outside of the organization, attitudes are quite different and if people agree with spanking then they are not very outspoken about it. However, in the organization, those who do not spank are sometimes looked down upon and those who think you should spank are very outspoken. The fact that many fundamental religions believe the same as the witnesses do in this matter only serves to catagorize the witness group with other harsh and rigid, rules based religions.

  I think though that you have to consider how these attitudes, even though out of print, have prevailed through JW culture to this day. Much of the way the Witnesses come to believe what they do is through the spoken word and not just in print. I'm sure we all could come out with much, albeit anecdotal, evidence of how witness parents still abide by these words today because older witnesses have kept the attitudes alive through their comments at the meetings or through public talks or through private council given by elders. Once Ideas like these were released into the "wild", even way back in the 50's and 60's they have germinated and spread through the cult like weeds.

  Did U hurt someone because of JW rules?

  i know we all make mistakes but did you ever really hurt someone while you were a jw, because of sticking to their darn rules?

  did you ever, even as it was happening, feel selfrighteous?.

  it is something that i have been thru over and over in my head and i have forgiven myself for it, but i can never make it right with the person i hurt.. my dad was an elder , very self righteous, he taught me well, i did what ever he said and acted the way he told me too.

  Dede, many of us have done things in the name of "righteousness" because we were blinded by doctrine of a false religion. You can even look at the example of Paul in the bible who was zealously persecuting Christians. I think by what you stated, your mom forgave you and those last moments that you had with her were certainly better for her I'm sure.

  I know that when I was a witness I would tell on people for doing things and would get on people for not contributing enough and I would look down on people for not being "spiritual". Looking back it makes me sick.

  Well, i guess its obvious that you weren't invited. And although you are still a friend to this girl, she obviously doesn't think much of you cause I guess her frendship for you was based on a religious belief and not actual friendship. The only purpose that could be served by going would be for your mom to see how awful everyone treats you, but then again your mom might reason that its your own fault, I don't know your mom, so I don't know how she'll react.

  I wouldn't go, because you don't want to subject yourself to them and their twisted thinking, it could hurt you. You deserve better than that.

  I just wonder what the hell current witnesses think when they read crap like this. This has hurt so many people in so many ways thinking that the end was right around the corner. Thank God I didn't wait and starting living my life.

  Don't be deluded into thinking that the witnesses see reason. A typical response could include, "they were anxious for the new system to come and many who were alive then are still alive" or, "It is important to keep urgent that armageddon is coming soon so that we do not fall asleep" or, "that was old light then, we have a better understanding now and aren't we grateful to Jehovah for it?" or, "who knows how long Jehovah thinks is a short time or a long time, for us it could be years, but for Jehovah it could be like mere seconds. One thing we know for sure is that we need to wait on Jehovah and Jehovah always rewards those who wait on him"

  So no, don't expect any to see the light on this subject unless they actually have "independent thought", something the organization commands its servants to guard against (wonder why). They all have their nice little excuses to fall back on so that they don't have to go and change their whole world view.
