the brother giving the talk is probably an utter hypocrite.. there are a few exceptions but consider that many elders are financially secure - which allows them to be elders.
while they talk about not planning for the future because armageddon 'is so close', they have pensions, ira's, roth accounts and investments.

Its the nature of a cult/high control group. You get the members conditioned to only accept and react to the 'love' you (meaning the group) give them and if they step out of line you withdraw that love leaving them empty and depressed yearning for it.
Look at your example that triggered these emotions...Cleaning the hall WORK! They tie their work and activities to your justification of living. Very cunning.

I do know that the books give off a certain smell. I knew one elder who had served at bethel and would always say when he visited he just needed to visit the bindry and smell the glue...I had no such inclination.
