Going to Memorial Service for the first time.....what should we expect?

we spent 6 months "studying" with a jw couple.

they claimed the wts had all the answers, but they actually couldn't answer any of our questions.

(we are devoted born-again bible-believing christians.).

my advice would be to go, see what you see, hear what you hear, think what you think about the whole thing. then let us know what you think. and be assured that not one person on this thread who has advised you to partake has ever partaken and it would be considered rude to do so. and it wouldn't cause nearly the buzz that people seem to think, because you are not a witness and no one would take you seriously even if you floated in on a cloud with a chorus of angels singing your praises. this attitude isn't directed at outsiders only. in maybe 25 or 30 memorials i've never seen anyone partake, but if they did, and they were jw they would be considered some kind of crazy person unless they were from new york and were at least 85 years old. so go, enjoy if possible, and please let us know your thoughts.

as a part time job on the side i have been doing income tax for many years.

i have around 100 clients and 50 of them are jws.

now that i am d/f i am not sure how many of the jws will continue to use my services.

no matter what others have said here i think your instincts are correct, this is an opportunity not a challenge. i can't say how much you can afford to do this, but if you can afford it try it...there wouldn't be anything wrong with charging a higher rate, but i wouldn't do that just to spite people(the elders, the jc, etc.) who aren't going to use your services anyway. if you do it this year and it doesn't work out, then next year you can offer what we call "the family rate" which is exactly twice the amount you charge anyone else. you should never turn down a chance to do good. but, i don't think you "owe" anybody anything, i just think you might be able to help someone because of your unique position. and you should be kind to yourself and not feel bad no matter how it goes. i hope it goes well for you.

let me see if i have this correct...the bible is a lie; we know this because men lie and we have been lied to. however, any supposed ancient text that disagrees with the bible is not a lie because men wouldn't lie to us about judas and his noble mission? hitler has his apologists; stalin has his apologists; j. edgar (pretty woman) hoover has his apologists; and now judas icarealot. some things really are too funny for words.

i'm another gene pitney fan...liked "24 hours from tulsa" a lot. a few years ago i ran across some of his albums in italian, it seems that through out his career, when he released an album in english he also released it in italian..."liberty valance" in italian really kicks.

when the interpreters moved away they asked the cong if there was anyone who wanted to learn.

this thread proves one thing...the only thing sillier than a religious arguement is a political arguement...ya'll sound like a bunch of drunks sitting in a bar argueing over whose football team is better. next someone will be challenging one and all to "step outside" and prove whose right with their fists. it also proves that any thread can be hi-jacked if enough inconsiderate posters play along.

Why Most Christians Can And Do Celebrate Birthdays

on another thread they were talking about the lack of joy and mental health problems coming from jw kids not being allowed to participate at class dances, sports and so forth.

the lack of the joyfulness of birthdays is another factor.

why not leave some copies of this in your kingdom halls and assemblies if you still attend.

i have celebrated many birthdays, and observed many being celebrated, and my experience is pretty much the same as blondie's.

but my question to you is...in what way is jehova honored in your celebrations? in my experience birthdays are absolutely about the individual.

i have never heard of any tradition in which god is honored or for that matter even mentioned in any way as part of the birthday celebration.

care to elaborate?

this would be a good questions from readers.......having read several scriptures about how the judges heard judicial case in the public court yard..so that all would see that true justice was served and know why a person was being stoned if it should come to type of punishment...what scriptural bases does the society have for conducting judicial cases in secret and then expect everyone to shun(stone) some one with out knowing what the crime was.

i would love so see what scriptures if any they could come up with.

thanks for the answer. this has turned into an interesting thread and i applaude your willingness to communicate. one of the problem i'm having is i don't trust any of the translations and don't think any of them would stand up to the questions we often apply to the nwt.
