or anyone else for that matter. can you point out any other government, social agency, or any other organization, besides the united nations, that uses the term ngo? if the united nations are the only ones; then anytime the term is used you are by definition associating with the un...the un has no reason or interest to list anyone as an ngo unless there is an association. i don't know about where you live but around here the "volunteer" fire department is a governmental agency with a taxing district and other government funds being available. but the only ones that would consider any organization an NGO is the UNITED NATIONS. if there are any governments, organizations, religions, corporations, or individuals, other than auld soul, that use the term NGO in anyway not connected to the UN, please give us their names.

as far as doctrine is concerned...the only doctrine that the wtb&ts is truly concerned is the doctrine of cover your own ass, all other doctrines are subject to change. auld soul your comment about individuals not being organizations is only true to a point, individuals represent organizations. as far as educating people is concerned, please educate those who don't know; what are the chances of a member of the wtb&ts registering at a united nations conference on their own?

My First Memorial Experience (From someone who has never been a JW)

i told you i would post, so if you are interested, here it is:.

we were walking toward the building laughing and happy, and i noticed that we were the only ones in good spirits.

everyone else was dressed to the nines and somber.

thanks for posting your experience, you were not the only one who had the exact same evening. once you have seen one, you have truly seen them all...only the names, faces, and places change. the brother who gave the talk was taught to speak the way he did (fake smile, mechanical delivery, speak left to right;right to left, fake smile) by people who learned to speak that way from people who spoke that way. it is formulaistic and leads to a very stilted way of talking. nodding off is so common as to be almost acceptable (snoring is considered bad form though)

"...i think i might have been the only one besides my husband who really was actually praying." if you had been where we were there would have been four of us praying for everyone there, so surely there were others. lets hope so anyway. at any rate i thought it was a loving thing for ya'll to do.

i posted on a thread earlier that i'm sure jesus had a sense of humour.. i clicked submit post.. then i thought, yeah i'm sure he did but he didn't tell any jokes did he?

in fact i can't think of anything funny in the whole bible.. here's your chance to post a bible story that gets you roaring with laughter...

it isn't roaring funny but i've always found humor in god's reasoning with jonah about not wiping out nineveh. to paraphrase---the people are to stupid to kill...and besides what about all those innocent animals...

Going to Memorial Service for the first time.....what should we expect?

we spent 6 months "studying" with a jw couple.

they claimed the wts had all the answers, but they actually couldn't answer any of our questions.

(we are devoted born-again bible-believing christians.).

my advice would be to go, see what you see, hear what you hear, think what you think about the whole thing. then let us know what you think. and be assured that not one person on this thread who has advised you to partake has ever partaken and it would be considered rude to do so. and it wouldn't cause nearly the buzz that people seem to think, because you are not a witness and no one would take you seriously even if you floated in on a cloud with a chorus of angels singing your praises. this attitude isn't directed at outsiders only. in maybe 25 or 30 memorials i've never seen anyone partake, but if they did, and they were jw they would be considered some kind of crazy person unless they were from new york and were at least 85 years old. so go, enjoy if possible, and please let us know your thoughts.

Should I sitll offer my JW clients a 50% discount

as a part time job on the side i have been doing income tax for many years.

i have around 100 clients and 50 of them are jws.

now that i am d/f i am not sure how many of the jws will continue to use my services.

no matter what others have said here i think your instincts are correct, this is an opportunity not a challenge. i can't say how much you can afford to do this, but if you can afford it try it...there wouldn't be anything wrong with charging a higher rate, but i wouldn't do that just to spite people(the elders, the jc, etc.) who aren't going to use your services anyway. if you do it this year and it doesn't work out, then next year you can offer what we call "the family rate" which is exactly twice the amount you charge anyone else. you should never turn down a chance to do good. but, i don't think you "owe" anybody anything, i just think you might be able to help someone because of your unique position. and you should be kind to yourself and not feel bad no matter how it goes. i hope it goes well for you.

let me see if i have this correct...the bible is a lie; we know this because men lie and we have been lied to. however, any supposed ancient text that disagrees with the bible is not a lie because men wouldn't lie to us about judas and his noble mission? hitler has his apologists; stalin has his apologists; j. edgar (pretty woman) hoover has his apologists; and now judas icarealot. some things really are too funny for words.

i'm another gene pitney fan...liked "24 hours from tulsa" a lot. a few years ago i ran across some of his albums in italian, it seems that through out his career, when he released an album in english he also released it in italian..."liberty valance" in italian really kicks.

this thread proves one thing...the only thing sillier than a religious arguement is a political arguement...ya'll sound like a bunch of drunks sitting in a bar argueing over whose football team is better. next someone will be challenging one and all to "step outside" and prove whose right with their fists. it also proves that any thread can be hi-jacked if enough inconsiderate posters play along.
