C. S. Lewis "Mere Christianity"

as many of you know i'm an atheist and over the years in my discussions with christians i've been encouraged to read the scholarly works of c. s. lewis.

the works of c. s. lewis, such as "mere christianity", "the screwtape letters", etc.

are supposed to be logical christian appologetics that will appeal to a thinking person.

I've been told the same things about his books, but I haven't really had the time to read them. I did read books by Josh Mc Dowell and Lee Stroubel that were supposed to have the same effect (this was at the time when I was still trying to convince myself that I was still a Christain, meaning I would give the "benefit of the doubt" to any pro Christain book), and they too failed on the weight of their illogic and/or silliness (when I was reading The Case for Christ and the "Lunatic, Liar or Lord" scenario was given to be a proof that Jesus existed, I couldn't help but shake my head in disbelief [pun intended ] ).

Anyway, rem, keep us posted on the book. Who knows, maybe it might get better and you'll be converted to Christanity in the end.

How much money would it take for you to go out in service?

say you had to go out in field service for 2 hours in your neighborhood and talk to your neighbors about jehovah.

what would somebody have to pay you to do this or would you not do it for any amount of money?

if i am going to humilate myself it better be worth my while.

A couple hundred would be enough (it's basically offering a magazine and hearing "no" ) . If offered $1million, I'd even give a presentation offering a book. I guess I'm just easy to bribe .

I've been in field service enough to know that it doesn't work. So I view such an excerise as a "no harm, no foul" situation.

Got caught throwing magazines in the trash

i had to take my dad to the va hospital for a doctor's appointment and in almost every waiting room there was magazines not even recent issues.

you have to wait for freaking ever at the va hospital so i decided to do my civic duty and i went around this huge hospital collecting magazines and would throw them in the nearest trash can.

nobody cared until i got on the 4th floor.

I mirror Euphemism's thoughts on the issue (is it because we both support Dean ?). If her husband is a JW also, he certainly has no problem taking advantage of a service provided for him because of his service in an instiution that is supposedly evil. I'm sure she'll relay her experience on how she fought off an apostate and "gave a witness" to the people who may have seen what transpired.

Football predictions for "egg chasers" (NFL)

well, the upcoming nfl season is about to start in two days, with my team the new york jets being involved in the opening game.

now i was a little discouraged when our starting qb chad pennington (the best in the nfl) went down earlier in the preseason with an injury that will keep him out for more than half the season, but fortunately for the jets, they're one of the few nfl teams with a backup qb that can be a quality starter, so i don't expect that we will have much of a drop off with vinny testaverde taking the reigns temporarily.

he'll surpass 40,000 career passing yards this year, and he also has a stronger arm than does pennington, so look for deep plays to the wide receivers.

dubla, just feel happy that the referee was too blind to notice that Anthony Becht's 2 point conversion did not take a "short hop". Pennington's numbers were very good, and considering the lack of help by the offensive line, I think (CBS announcer) Randy Cross' assessment that Pennington is a top 5 QB in this league is more than warranted.

Yeah, getting swept is a little hard to take, but at least the Jets isn't the worst football team in NY (a team we both wrongfully picked for the playoffs). Savour your bragging rights for now, because next season when the Jets are hoisting the Lombardi trophy, you'll be feeling quite different .

superbowl is around the corner and just wondering how many of you are football fans and who your favorite team is?.

me, i don't watch football as much as i used to.

i'm from huntington, wv and the football team there is marshall university "the thundering herd".

If only they could have shown that kind of defensive intensity all season as they showed on Sunday .

Oh well, at least I'm not a Giants fan . Plus we can still ruin things for the Patroits and Dolphins, which still could make my season enjoyable.

my father dad himself for purely emotional reasons when my parents got divorced seven years ago.

it was a rash decision to say the least.

i re-established contact with him about three months ago.

RATED R MOVIES

this past weekend a relative came over with these ultimate fighting dvds that he bought but he wouldn't sit down and watch city by the sea because it is rated r.

they can be so dense and hypocritical!

when i pointed out to him that his ultimate fighting dvds are un-rated but in my opinion it is far worse to watch people fighting for pure entertainment purposes than it is to see a rated r movie that teaches a great life lesson.

Well, he's either lieing, or he hasn't watched any movies since "talkies" started being made. There are episodes of The Simpsons (a favourite show of mine ) that are way more shocking. Was he offended by a few curse words?

When I was young, my parents wouldn't let me see R rated movies that contained nudity, but they didn't seem to have much problems with violence. Witnesses go way overboard with the R rated stuff, but I found their dislike for Scooby Doo to be far more strange. My parents had no problem with me watching it.

Did You Dedicate Your Life to Serving Jehovah?

i remember at the age of 14, i was studying with a very well respected elder in the congregation.

me, him, and my dad studied together.

every once in a while during the study, he would turn to me and ask me "have you dedicated your life to jehovah?".

Wow Euphemism, it's amazing how good your memory is from 94 years ago . But I did feel exactly the way you did (aged 12); I figured that it was simply what any good person would do, and obviously I had no real concept of what I was giving up. I don't recall having a "dedicate your life to God" prayer either.

there are generally two types of arguments against theism whether we are talking about the judeo-christian-islamic god, the god of deism, the hindu pantheon....whatever.

the "rational" arguments include all scientific, logical and historical problems with a supreme and all-loving being and include such fields as evolutionary biology, deconstruction of "holy" texts, archaeology, formal logic, etc.

science in particular has been eliminating the "explanatory" aspect of theism for hundreds of years now -- from copernicus to newton to darwin to einstein -- all, knowingly or unknowingly, willingly or unwillingly, have had a share in shattering faith.
