The above responses are right on. I would like to add - People who feel insignificant in all aspects of their life, education, economic status, etc. but who can be "somebody" in the closed environment of the org. This can bring out the worst in some personalities, like frustrated males who can become 'elders' (this formal title was a stroke of genius by the WTS when it came out in the early 70's. Kind of like poor black sharecroppers who can be a "deacon" in their church.) and weild considerable power over others in the cong. I have known so many of these pathetic losers. They wouldn't leave the org. if you put a gun to their pointy heads. It is all they are.

What if they're right?
by LovesDubs indid that mentality keep you in fear and prevent you from leaving?
how many times were we told that the kingdom halls would be our ark and that we needed to keep going to the meetings so that we wouldnt miss the announcement that the great tribulation was beginning and the doors of the ark were closing...even though the bible says nobody knows the day or the hour?
did any of you ever pray for your relatives to die so they would have a ressurection and not be destroyed at armageddon?

WHAT IF THEY'RE RIGHT!!?
If an organization or entity truly had "THE TRUTH", that is, they really had some spiritual inside track on where mankind had been, why everything happened as it did, knew the meaning of all that is happening now and exactly where it was all going and knew how we could all not just survive the coming catastrophe but live forever afterwards, DON'T YOU THINK THEY WOULD HAVE THE BALLS TO ALLOW THEIR CRITICS, LET ALONE THEIR OWN FOLLOWERS, TO OPENLY ASK HARD QUESTIONS?
They should be conducting themselves like Superman! Bold and brave and unafraid! Have their own goddamned cable TV channel, Broadcast debates with their harshest critics! (1 Peter 3:15..."be ready to give an answer...").
But they practice the opposite. As if their beliefs are all printed on bathroom tissue that cannot withstand a drop of rain without starting to dissolve. Their paranoia leads them to instruct their followers to not even talk to a person who disagrees, don't read anything that is critical. No wonder the internet has them pulling their hair out! They keep a platoon of lawyers busy to make sure the truth they preach doesn't cost them any money! If it does, they'll change it! What if their right? It would be more intellectually stimulating to discuss "What if pigs could fly?" -

Yes, it was like a reflexive smack up side the kids head which knocked him back a ways. A lot of the reason he was removed was that the boys mother pressed the issue and the elder was not apologetic about his overreaction. This elder was a wee bit rough around the edges anyway. He was reinstated later. A few years after that he was disfellowshipped and his wife divorced him. (Inever knew the details of the DFing.) He took up with a young woman barely out of her teens who had lived a hard, fast life. They lived together for 2 or 3 years and the girl left him for a young man more her age. One day he called her on the phone and told her he was going to kill himself. She heard a shot then silence. She called the police to investigate and they found him dead with the phone in one hand and a pistol in the other. This, of course, is the way the Witnesses would like all unrepentant DF'd people to end up. It was a real "I told you" so moment for them.

Describe yourself as a tree.
by AK - Jeff ini think i would be a bit of a scruff pine.. i hold my place well, weather the storms with deep roots.
i am not as stately as some of my brethren trees.
i don't make the cover of "tree monthly".

There was the big beer belly elder who was back at the meetings after surgery to correct an umbilical hernia. It was at the conclusion of the service meeting and people were milling in the aisles talking, etc. He was the kind of guy that had always given the kids a lot of attention, mussing their hair, roughhousing etc. Well, little 6 year old "Bobby" was so excited to see him that he ran up and punched him right in the bellybutton while he was talking to Bobbys mother. He let out a roar as he cuffed Bobby ass over teakettle down the aisle. Bobby started shrieking, Momma let out a scream and ran to her baby as Bro. Elder doubled up on the floor moaning in pain. The entire cong. of 200+ people had gone dead silent. Momma then turned to brother elder and gave him a tongue lashing you wouldn't believe. Brother bellybutton ended up being removed and Momma and Bobby moved to a different cong.

What keeps you from killing yourself?
by AlmostAtheist inevery once in a while, the whole "futility of life" thing washes over me and something inside of me mentions the suicide option.
not that it's ever seriously considered, but one of the low-level accounting-types in my head quietly sends around a "worst-case scenario" memo that everyone reads, then dismisses.. after all, things always perk up.
"but," reminds the pessimistic little guy that should've been fired years ago, "they always go back down, too.

Quandry, wow. The elturds that DF'd your daughter are probably suicidal themselves but they'd never admit it. Imagine the deep disapointments they are experiencing as the WTS (who basically own their asses) keeps playing peek-a-boo with them about the END. They are like dogs infected with rabies that want to bite somebody. They're some pretty miserable SOBs to treat a young woman like that, regardless of what she did.
Please remember that the WTS has deeply hurt a lot of the very people who post on this board. I know you will continue to encourage your daughter. But, I have to say, considering the topic above, please, please, don't you dare let the goddamned Watchtower System rob you of the joy and gift of life.
Be strong

I think any religion can change some one's life to a positive way.
by free2beme ini remember as a witness, how we always were told account of people getting their life changed in a wonderful way, when they became witnesses.
we always thought, "that is what happens when jehovah comes into your life.
" yet if you think about it, every religion i have ever encountered, has similar account of lives being changed by religion.

and of course it was our old comrade Karl who observed that "religion is the opium of the people" So true.
