Try raising 13 kids on an annual income of about $480.00.
That would barely feed a group like that for week today.
something burn linked to on the thread about gender equality got me to thinking.. the statement was made that it is mostly the woman who is in charge of the family budget, and she knows instinctively that you can't spend your way out of debt.. i know that, but this basic fact seems lost on some.. for example, i see my oldest daughter making financial blunder after financial blunder.. she has, in effect, told me to stay out of her business, yet it is i to whom she comes begging for help when her money goes south.. my maternal g'mother, who lived to the age of 104, had a favorite saying: "root, hog, or stay poor.
swim or sink.".
i've decided to let her stay poor or sink - whichever comes first.. syl.

My great great family members were all southerners during the civil war. GGGdad was captured and consripted into the union army, sent out west to fight the indians.
His wife with several children got something like $10.00 a month in aid.

Give the kids a quarter to skip supper then charge them a quarter for breakfast. Send them off to public school and let the taxpayers provide lunch.
Seriously, when it comes to food you can run around in the car to pick up bargains at this store or that but the effort is futile when food is wasted, especially perishables that spoil in the fridge. If you pay a $1.00 for a head of lettuce and end up throwing half of it away then you are really paying $2.00 a head, etc.
The other delusion of thrift is to save left overs in fancy little plastic containers. Wait two or three days, open the container, say "yuck" and pitch the whole thing in the garbage. Then make a note to pick up more little plastic bowls with lids and some zip bags. But don't buy them in the market you are in. Drive over to another market where you can buy them for 3 cents less.
we are made of atoms, the whole world, our furniture, our skin, the planet and the universe.
even jws and god-loving exjws in this forum accept it.. but atoms are made of smaller particles, electrons, protons, neutrons.
but what are those particles really?
Way cool! I am going to send this to my credit card company and hopefully they will change their uptight attitude...
what's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?.
my personal recommendation: synecdoche, new york.
it's one of those movies that words fail utterly to capture--which really is the hallmark of a good movie, i suppose.
Recently saw "Get Low", Robert Duval, Bill Murray. No special effects, no violence, just an engrossing character study circa 1930's. Humor, and pathos. Great movie.
Also, "Winter Bone", set in the early sixties but an entirely different story. About hardships and family love. The young actress who stars was wonderful and made the movie. Loved it.
These are 'small' movies. You will not see them at the multi-plex. Wait for the DVD unless you live in a larger metro area that has a good art theatre.
there was a strange statement in last week's study article.
well, let's be honest: there were plenty of strange statements!
but one in particular bothered me.
C,mon people, as idiotic as the Watchtower's (usual) reasoning is, it's no worse that the daft reasoning found in the Bible: Jesus' mother, Mary, was an "imperfect" human, yet she gave birth to this "perfect" man, explained away as "the virgin birth".
If you can swallow that Scriptural nonsense, you can swallow anything after that, including the same sort of twaddle written a couple of thousand years.
This is a great post, Steve. It cuts into the entire lunatic fantasy of Christianity. The only thing you could have added was that this babies sacrificial blood was the only thing that his father, God Almighty, would accept as valid payment in exchange for forgiving people who masturbate or who have oral sex etc.
PS. "Twaddle" is one of my favorite words.

we are all being played
Even all the way to Scotland? OK. ?
Apparently some US administrations can play us better than others. The Obama administration has proven to be very bad at 'playing' the American public. Damn the reality! It gets you every time. Everyone started off pulling for the first black president. Great. It turns out Jimmy Carter gets down on his knees every night to thank god he has been pushed out of the worst president in history position. He will probably write another book.
But Obama has come a cropper in every endeavour. He wasted his Democratic majority by pushing through schemes that all had a huge element of pork - unions & wall street bailouts. Meanwhile the country, including the hated private business interests, are sitting this out until they know what the hell is next. 10% unemployment after a trillion $ "bailout" (nd a fiasco "cash for clunker program,) ad infinitum....
No wonder the progressive finds nostalgic comfort in looking back to the Bush days with all the re-written historical context. Lies or not, they love having an excuse to stand by. Thank God for the NY Times, etc.
to the household of dog, hades, and those who go with you... may you have smoke [on the water]!.
as you know i have, for many years now, related to you that i hear the voice of the dog shepherd, the smoked one of hades and vodka spirits, auhsehaj hajahcisim [abbreviated in the ancient texts as grim, a four consonant tetragrammaton meaning smoke, drunk, and savior].
over such years i have received many questions and comments, and engaged in various debates regarding the validity of that name and my translation of it's transmutations throughout the ages including several redacted engagements of the original name.
So just how does ANJELICAHOUSTON fit into the theraputic arrangement?

I understand, Stonewall. On my Pakistan post I guess spelling errors and pinning down the actual number of nukes is very important to you.
Sort of like how you are still stewing over George Bush. You don't seem to get the point. Too easy to be snotty rather than have a dialogue.

Let's bring the subject of WMD's up to date. The current civilian government of Pakistan is corrupt, weak and detached from the real leadership of the country which is the ISI, secret service, who are aiding and abetting Al Quada and are the main source of support for the Taliban. Pakistan has between 100 and 200 real, honest to god, nuclear weapons. They have tested them and they worked just fine.
If the terrorists get their hands on these weapons are we going to wring our hands and say, "yeah, but remember Iran..." The Israelis have nukes. My guess is they will turn large parts of Pakistan into puddles of glass before they will wait for the US to dither.
