So Prince didn't leave any WT's and Asleeps with Simon prior to his exit?
The SHAME!!!!!
this was a said by my jw relative to my never-been-jw husband this weekend, during a conversation about the prevalence of swearing.. "my friend maria's husband [was unbelieving mate, now a witness] always swore like a sailor.
he said he could see jehovah's witnesses had the truth because they didn't use bad language.".
for all the reasons for believing jw's have the truth, this was a new one to me..
Pretty much all the guys in my family will curse on occasion, regardless of their spiritual ranking in the JW kingdumb.
Those that don't take part in cursing, do take part in cursing-lite. For instance I have an uncle and his wife, they will say frickin' or flippin', dang it, crap, etc, etc,
This uncle is an elder too and doesn't blink an eye when his kids use the curse-lite words.
And to be honest,, if this elder/uncle was with me and the guys,, you'd definitely hear a few shits and damns.
I openly curse in front of my parents,, nothing too harsh, usually a damn it, or a shit here and there. Typically I do it under the pretense of trying to be funny.
After years of doing so, my mom,,, the major goody goody of the family will even let out a curse to be funny on occasion.
Dad ofcourse will emulate my style of cursing when it's just him and I. Love ya Dad!!!
the chaperoning rule has got to be one of the craziest rules the society has come up with.
has anyone had a problem with it?
i find most congregations don't seem too strict on it, but my one is very strict.
Lady Lee, WOW!
Ya know, almost every time I log onto JWD I read about something that makes me shake my head. I tell ya, my neck is sore right now!
I'm pretty strong willed, but often wonder how I would have reacted in such a situation as that. Is your mother that controlling and demanding? Was she relentless to the point
that people around her just give in and abide by her wishes? If my mother had been like that, I wonder how I would have reacted.
Again, I'm shaking my head at this. wow.
so after a very, very slow process, thinking over things that were stored in a little box in a corner of my mind, i've decided to finally confirm or deny all the doubts i've had about the society.
i'm a 34 year-old married man, work as an it consultant, with two kids, ages 9 and 2. i was "born" in the organization.
so i took everything as true, never questioned anything, and did all that was asked from me.
Welcome!
Glad to hear your fade has already gone quite well. Do you have many family members that are J-dubs? If so, how do they treat you?
do current jws still sing were jehobahs witlesses!
at their khs and conventions ??
i suspect ..but am not sure if they still use this song.especially due to all the false statements in the words.. ours is the god of true propheceeeeee what he fortells comes to be!
1. Men make gods of wood and stone, But the true god they've not known.
He is the god almighty, As he's often shown.
Other gods just cannot see what in future days will be.
For witnesses they look all in vain, Since none their godship can maintain.
Chorus: We're Jehovah's witnesses, We speak out in foolishness. Ours is the God of true torturing, what he foretells comes to be.
2. You're my witneses' god said, other gods you need not dread.
I am god jehovah, sovreign lord and head.
I both saved and cannot see what in future days will be.
For witnesses they name near and far; prove that my witnesses you are.
Chorus:
3. Witnessing exalts god's name, lifts there from reproach and shame.
But it warns the wicked Who god's name defame.
Pardon it holds out to men, if they turn to god again.
Thus bearing witness brings joy and peace and hope of life that will not cease.
Chorus.
Damn, now I'll have that song stuck in my head for a week.
every once in a while i hear a jw say "if i hadn't been raised in the truth, i never would have come into the truth.
" have you ever heard that?
wishful thinking?
I'm really glad you brought this topic up. I personally have heard that question asked of one self on a few occasions. The one I recall most, was a 'friend' of mine.
He was having a discussion with my mom while we were out preaching. He felt that he would never have become a witness had his mother not raised him as one.
My mom put a lot of energy into trying to convince him that he would have become a witness even if his family hadn't raised him as one. In the end he gave in to my
mother's 'reasoning'(not that anything she said was reasonable) A few years ago I told my mom the same thing, that I would NEVER have become a witness had I not
been raised as one. My mom didn't put much effort into trying to convince me otherwise,, but then again, I've never been easily influenced like my friend was.
In my opinion, when a j-dub makes that statement, I believe what we are seeing is their doubts and questions beginning to surface and this is how it is expressed.
.
the spin on downsizing is apparently "go out into the field" yet when the gb initially considered this it must have been presented as a practical problem - too much surplus hr capacity/ too expensive to maintain - or whatever and yet they turned it into a positive matter by stressing the return to the field - all those in such discussions are clearly able to deceive themselves as much as they try and deceive the "flock" - what do you think - did a discussion on a practical problem have to have a positive outcome and how did they twist their minds so as to sell it as such - for years they begged people to stay in bethel service (make it your home for life) and now they cast them out into the world with the thin veneer of "speedin g up the preaching work .. etc".
all those at the top must have been involved in turning this huge embarrasment (jehovah will provide etc) into a positive spin - they should try out for a marketing award "downsizing - the only way to grow!
they will definitely need people but they would get them on a as needed basis.
True, from a business point of view,, let's get rid of the old workers while we still can,, then we'll start using the young guys on a temp basis only.
It's actually a pretty good idea if put a time limit on how long you can serve. I can imagine it would cut long term costs down to 1/10th of what it is now.
the chaperoning rule has got to be one of the craziest rules the society has come up with.
has anyone had a problem with it?
i find most congregations don't seem too strict on it, but my one is very strict.
That's true blondie, my jw parents dated during that same time when it was ok to pick up your girl on a motorcycle, taker her for icecream and bring her back home later.
Nobody blinked an eye at this. As long as the family invovled supported it, it was all good.
My favorite variation of the chaperone rule that makes me wanna puke is this: Two couples are not allowed to ride in the same car together,, there MUST be a fifth wheel to tag
along and make sure the two couples don't pull over and start bangin' on the hood of the car.
mum, i said.. "if you were forced to decide, either quit being a witness or your son will die what would you choose?".
she said.. "well, i'd choose jehovah".
i thought she'd attempt to cover it up, maybe say "i don't know" or even shout at me but she answered that, she's confused thinking that pleasing god is being a witness, and i'd have to die because of her beliefs...deep down i knew the answer but it confirmed a few things for me.. i ain't shocked or upset but...if i was in the same situation, i would never ever let someone else suffer what i believe, that isn't just.. but she added something else.
She said not accepting blood was a protection
Protection from what? Not accepting, certainly won't protect from death.
Yeah, I know what they'd say,, not accepting blood, though resulting in death, will prove that you are loyal to jehovah/watchtower corp and therefore he'll remember you in the
'new system'
What a bunch of crap I say!
yet another question (two actually), i'm afraid (but i am learning from all this, honestly!)..
i've seen the term 'privileges' on here many times, and i think i now understand that it means 'being allowed to carry out tasks in the congregation' - which includes walking round with the microphone, operating the pa system, etc.
in the services.
My second question is: if I as a visitor had raised a question (based on the topic) what would have happened? Are only JWs allowed to 'comment'?
They will allow you to comment. However: if you deviate from the scripted comments, you can pretty much guarantee never to be called on again.
If you ask a question,, the typical answer will be for you to wait until after the meeting upon which a couple elders will gang bang your mind into jw submission.
As you said,, it's not much of a discussion.
