It could be the weekend of the circuit assembly but i dont think theres any question the love of the greater # of witnesses for preaching is lessening to a great extent. More and more witnesses are quitting pioneering and joining clubs, art groups, dance lessons, and so forth. The organization's pleas for field service participation is ringing hollow in more and more jw ears.

hi, had2beme, lots of people are quitting association with JWs because they can't be themselves, but they search for answers and get stuck. So many opinions about JWs, the Bible, and religion in general. Islam's holy book is just another silly book of faith. IMO at least it claims to be the word of god whereas the Bible was compiled as a bunch of books, some contradictory and some having nothing to do with the others. Lots of religions use Jehovah or Yahweh. They're everywhere, they just don't make such a big deal about using what they think might be God's name as it really doesn't appear in the new testament and Jesus never used it. Rutherford had one thing right: religion IS a snare and a racket. Please don't jump out of the frying pan and into the fire. I recommend you do a lot of skeptical and rational thinking before you think about finding another faith. Welcome to JWD.

Comments from Gurunet about Millerites
by Undecided innearly all millerites speak of "present truth" and "new light", by which the faithful are called out from the less enlightened or apostate traditions of christianity.
the largest millerite group at the present time is the seventh day adventist general conference (the seventh-day adventist church, with approximately 11 million members, world-wide.
the jehovah's witnesses are another large group with descendent lineage from the millerite movement.. .

Isn't Gurunet fun? What was it called in its first incarnation? I forget... but I remember it was COMF on H2O many years ago that recommended it.

I'm sorry, you lost me. I suddenly feel nauseated.

It'd be interesting to know if different congos used different ways of interrupting an overtime talk. All 3 congos I attended used a simple bell. I even got to ring the bell a few times as the school overseer's official timer. Yay for me! If it sounded like the talk (or the sister, poor poor sisters and their inability to give a proper and dignified talk on stage) was wrapping up, I'd allot a few extra seconds. I wonder if I'd get yelled at these days; they sure seem strict on timing.
Funny the memories you retain. I remember practicing my talks so they'd be 5:10 but I knew I'd talk faster on stage, being a little nervous. One talk was so boring I couldn't develop it for more than 3:30 and got counseled for the talk being too short in length. I remember another dude who was irregular to meetings and half in the bag most of the time gave an 8 minute talk. Never knew why they didn't give him the hook. Why do some meaningless yet unresolved questions burn your brain on an early Saturday morning?

Jeff, yeah I think it is. AlanF has related this story, told to him by I forget who. Knorr would counsel the Bethel young men on peeing without touching "it" improperly. I'll let others speculate as to the hows, whys and wherefores.

Incredible logic of an unfiltered child (or "I'm so proud of my boy!")
by AlmostAtheist ingina and i were reading over jwd when zach (my 7-yr-old) came in and asked what we were doing.
i explained that i was reading about how a man came to be a jw, and how he managed to get out.
(auldsoul, good story so far!

One of my mother's proudest moments came when I was 5 or so, she's paying for groceries, and the clerk asks me if I attend school, and I proudly say "I go to the THEOCRATIC school!"
It's a little, neat, harmless memory, and JWism was my heritage. I wouldn't recommend it for children now, but I think at that tender age it was a nice thing to take pride in.

Sect or cult?
by Cady inso i finally decided to get my a** to the library and read some real research on cults.
the book i'm starting with is "psychodynamic perspectives on religion, sect and cult.
in the introduction they mention margaret thaler singer's definition of a destructive cult as an organization in which:a leader claims divinity or special relationship with god.

I think an organization or group that suppresses freedom of thought, expression, and research under penalty of expulsion, rejection, and shunning -- is a cult. JWs incidentally happen to promote other awful things but it boils down to information control, and that is the greatest crime that can be committed against a human soul. As proplog suggests, evil happens to occur to just about everyone. It's best dealt with as much processed information as possible, and not just a Watchtower index and advice from people in the same proverbial boat.
