Woot! More Washingtonians!
I lived on Capitol Hill for 9 years, and Des Moines WA for 18. (had 5 yrs. in CA for school - but back in Des Moines again now.)
Housing prices are insane in Des Moines. Ours was near 300,000. No view of the water, but about 4 blocks away from the Marina.
We usually keep our eye out for groceries, looking for the better deals between Safeway, QFC, or Fred Meyer's Grocery. We are a family of 2, so we spend around 120-140 a mo. for food.
Gas-Texeco. So what every avg. fluctuating price is there. My wife only drives since I can't due to my eyesight, so I buy METRO passes which run around $100 for 3 mo. pass.
But, all in all...after a small 3 yr. sting for school in CA, I think it's better to live here in WA. The Bay Area was a whole lot more expensive then it is up here.

Washington state, is the best home one could have. Just being located in or near Seattle: your 2.5 hrs from the Ocean and a Rainforest (which is under the majesty of the Olympic Mountain Range). On a summer's day, drive east over Snoqualmie Pass of the Cascade Mountain Range see some snow then drive on down in to the dry croplands and desert of the Columbian Basin. The summer wheat, with it's fields of gold. Another few hours to the NE and you can catch a sliver of the Rocky Mtns., just be sure to stop by Kettle Falls on the way. Grand Coulee Dam, another fine sight to behold.
Mt. Hood? HA! Mt. Shasta? PUH-LEAZE! You want to see what a real Volcanoe looks like?...Mt. Rainier. A gaze upon old Mt. Rainier (Tahoma), and it nearly wipes your problems from your mind. Or visit old Mt. St. Helens, or what's left of her, and see evidence of natures recent and mighty force. If you feel for something a bit more relaxing, we got Mt. Adams and Mt. Baker to gaze upon.
We have valley belt-ways all over the place. Forests that run as far as the eye can see. A desert that beckons adventure.
Washington State, a place to call home.
