  a customer on my route with whom i have had some lively debates was his number 1 complaint is that "the witnesses have so many rules".

  last month i agreed with on this issue.

  he asked why the change, i told him that i have been doing some soul searching.

  Morals, ethics, principles - usually stem not from a set of rules and threats, but from respect for oneself and respect for others.

  I never found that JWs instilled that type of respect.

  Like most cults, they first tear down the individual in order to rebuild them in the desired image. You're constantly told you're not good enough, not doing enough, always falling short of the mark. Your natural desire for friends, recreation, school, learning, entertainment, and your natural curiosity about the world around you - all the things that build self-esteem - are thwarted at every turn and you're made to feel guilty about even having those desires.

  They teach suspicion, distrust and avoidance of everyone else in your life - they cut off the "exits."

  I left the organization in my early 20's and found myself very ill-prepared for nearly every aspect of life due to being raised as a JW. I had no real social skills, I was too trusting, naive, lacked critical thinking skills, had no goals or aspirations.

  College helped somewhat, but I was still developmentally way behind. I lacked self-confidence, was needy, and painfully shy. No wonder I married the wrong person - I was still developing and ended up being quite a different person than he expected.

  James, there must be a better way to instill values than bringing up a child in a regressive cult. Are you sure that is your true motivation? Search your heart.

  ok i started another thread and every one jumped on me because i was trying to take the theory of evolution out of the mix and most here seem to believe in it so i will just say it.

  the theory of major evolution is crap!

  the theory is falling apart.

  Yes there is evidence of animals etc. making changes over time but where is all this evidence of creatures trying to evolve one way and it not working out and they die surely there should be a tons of evidence of creatures trying to evolve and it doesn't take.

  C'mon you guys! How can you argue with logic like that?

  OK, if you substitute "GB" for every reference to 'animals' or 'pets' in blondie's post above - you get things in perspective.

  i.e.,

  Individuals become so emotionally wrapped up with pets that the animals govern human lives.

  for some persons a pet becomes even more important than marital attachments.

  a person might gradually allow animals to occupy an increasingly important place in his life and affections.

  i was cheering wendy williams on when i saw her on et calling paula deen to the carpet for her use of racial slurs.

  i use to work for a woman that reminds me of paula deen.

  she was s caucasian woman her mid 60s and she was raised in georgia and she constantly would make racial jokes and do racial jestures in front of me.

  The antidote to the myth that JWs are declining

  one of the most persistent myths on this website is that jws are already in decline, the rot has set in, and the descent of the watchtower is inevitable from here on in.

  unfortunately the facts do not bear this out.

  jws are still increasing even in most developing countries, and they are still growing worldwide at a faster rate than the general population.

  Random thoughts on this interesting topic:

  It would be helpful in this discussion to establish some criteria that remains consistent, such as a definition of "decline." By my definition they are in decline - we won't see a complete implosion, but I think we are beginning to see a "hollowing out" - most of those in are going through the motions, the 'fire in the belly' isn't even embers anymore.

  There is a wide variance on the continuum between "modest growth" and "last one out the door, turn the lights out."

  I doubt that we will see in our lifetime a scenario where the GB says, in effect, "The jig is up! We've been stringing y'all along all this time."

  When they abandoned 1914, they lost the lynchpin that ignited a sense of urgency. Without urgency, people become lackadaisical, dull and easily distracted.

  Once a JW reaches a certain age - say 60/70 - they have more reason to stay in than to leave, even if they suspect TTATT.

  Can we trust their numbers? They've changed their definitions of "pioneer," "publisher," "generation," etc., perhaps they've changed the definition of who they count as a JW.

  I once calculated that, of my large JW extended 3rd and 4th generation born-in family, at least 60% had left the organization.
