I just want to know what most of jw(ex or inactive or active) parents use or used for curriculms. And results of using certain ones.

Please recommend books/websites about early church history..
by AK - Jeff ini am reading shelly's 'church history in plain language', and enjoying it's down to earth 'layman' style very much.. i would like to read some books on the evolution of church doctrine - hopefully written in the same style.
i am no biblical/historical scholar by admission - and would love to read some literature on how doctrines altered and changed in the early centuries - something that doesn't put one to sleep with it's long-windedness - but also detailed enough, and in plain language enough, to keep me interested.. many of you folks must have favorites - can you recommend them ?.

After we(whole family) decided to study about early church history and orgins of different teachings, doctrines, and religions. We highly recommend some of Bart D. Ehrman's stuff. We are in our last lecture on "From Jesus to Constantine: A History of Early Christianity". This also come in as book. I think he is pretty detail about many developments in early years and down to present time. You could check out these items from public libraries(we bought them because we didn't know that libraries have these item and also could get them from other libraries in the area or even from outside of our library system as paper request). You could also check this website for more of related subjects under religion ---www.TEACH12.com. We watched these lectures when we stopped going to meetings on Sundays to easy the habit of going to meetings. We decided that we were going to educate our kids about different religions and their origins and teachings to help them so if they decided to get involve in something, at least they would know about it. Library also have videos from Schlessinger media on different religions. Bart D. Ehrman got some good books on early christianity too, if you prefer a book. I have

My husband is 10 years older than me and we get along just fine. Of course, I always prefer older ones. When I was under 20, I didn't feel comfortable with guys who were older than me(more than 2 to 3 years) but after I got older I no longer felt uncomfortabe with much older guys. Just because they seemed more mutual and wiser. I don't think she is too young for you, after all she is not a minor and she is not just someone fresh out of highschool and starting out in a new job or workforce. It would be different if she is a minor and I seriously doubt that she don''t know what she is doing with you. My husband was sameway with you. Never been married or had anykind of serious relationship but had few soul searching experiences due to having difference or change of opinions in religion. I think you are just little nervous because of your situation(from being jw to no-jw). I think your friend is wrong about you having more experiences in life for therefore you wouldn't have anything in common. Believe it or not, ones having more experience in life would be a postive thing(I don't mean in physical way) but with life. It will actually, enhance the relationship and able deal with younger one with patience. My DH, sure got a lot more patiences and wisdome than I do. And it has been more helpful in our relationship than made cause imbalance. Anyway, this is my thought. I usually don't like to get involve in anykind of relationship but just felt like it this time.
I like this quote.
"The major problem of life is learning how to handle the costly interruptions----the door that slams shut, the plan that got sidetracted, the marriage that failed, or that lovely poem that didn't get written because somenone knocked on the door." ----The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
You could look at it this way---is this an opportunity that is like that lovely poem that didn't get written because someone discouraged me to do it (or my unsure self is slamming the door shut and holding myself back). You will never know unless you try and fail or succeed.

Actually, my husband invited mormons to our home and had some interesting conversations. Before we faded away, we invited them to have bible discussions thinking that we could changing them and just to have some easy hours to claim for fs. I was amazed how much they are like jw. It was scary and eye opening experiences for me. We had them over every week for three months and you could learn alot about similarity in jws and mormons. The manners, how they approch people to convert, and even keeping tracking field service time. Scary.

Hi. My thoughts on helping your wife would be nothing but using the Bible. My husband and I were jws and pretty active ones but not anymore. At first he didn't challeng the jw teachings but just have me read few scriptures here and there to see if it makes sense with articles in magazines and even things from meetings. At first he looked like he was just trying to share and have my opinion about it but all he was trying to do was to see society teaching was really correct and interpreting the scriptures right.. After all he was just reading the Bible and how could I turned him down when we as jw take so much pride in ourselves as serious Bible students and claiming to have the truth. Having nothing but the Bible and asking something out of it was hard to ignore because that is what we are supposed to do when we go out field services and present ourselves as ones with the truth and know the Bible better than anyone or any religions. At lease it worked for my husband and I ended up leaving jw. I could not turned down the Bible( after all jw belive in this and it is God's word then they should consider it as most important thing). I got on internet to prove my husband wrong but I ended up proving myself wrong. It was not an easy thing since I truly believed that it was the truth and came to love many people in kh. It was painful at first thinging of leaving them and don't know where to go since I didn't know anyone other jws and life style of jw. Most important thing is that you never talk anything negative about society or teaching untill later on and add little bit here and there. My hubby never talked negative or degrade their teachings in anyway but did that with respect. I think that is why I was getting mad at him because he was working on me as jw and made me realized how much I didn't know and I was out there teaching others. Put me in a spot where I had analize myself as God's representative(after all that is what jws are and they do claim that).

Sort of newbie. Found this site by just typing jehovah's witness. I did this to prove my husband and his friends that they are wrong about jw but I ended up proving myself wrong. I couldn't take my eyes off this site and some other sites like freemind etc. I couldn't sleep for eat for several weeks and got sick. I felt so betrayed and numb. I couldn't believe all those things I was reading, especially about jw's teaching because my husband and his friends were already pointing those things out and were discussing with each other for long time. They did not get one any websites for talk to anyone except with each other. I shared some of things I was reading with them and they were amazed at how many of jws are out there feel same way with us. Amazing how the world looked small to us suddenly. We all decided to fade away from kh and took us about two years to do it. Jws at kh didn't know what to think of us or didn't realized until they realized all of us weren't there one day. We took turns to miss meetings, services, and even special meetings at assemblies. We never made anyone suspect us for anything but that we were busy with our home, family, and we were sick with something. After all I ended up proving myself wrong and saved my marriage. We were fighting alot over jw teachings before and we were heading for division in our marriage. Just think what my life and marriage would have been if I didn't research. I even got hold of R. F. and had couple of nice time exchanging emails. Very gentle and nice human being.
My husband never used anything but Bible to present his case to me and I was having hard time ignoring him after all jws take pride in themselves about being a serious Bible students and even bragging about how much they know the truth. My husband was the serious one with the Bible and I couldn't ignore him when he kept challenging with the Bible. One day, he just wanted to us(whole family ) start reading Bible and nothing else. Amazing how much you don't know the bible as jw untill you start reading the Bible without all those literatures for jw.
Anyway, didn't mean to write a long story. This site has been most helpful and full of informations and also addictive. I have learn alot from this site and the informations from this has been most helpful when it comes to talking to jws coming to our homes. We already knew about many things they were trying to tell us or missed from meetings. Made them feel uncomfortable that fact that we were so informed and able to counter act so good. I guess I should feel thankful to some of you out there even though I don't agree with some of you but that is my personal thing.

We had a local need talk about using perfume and cologne because his wife was allergic to them. He said it was rude and unchristian like and inconsiderate to others who had serious health problem. It was making her so sick that she was afraid to come to meetings. Since then everyone was afraid to use perfume and cologne, even for going out to service.

Question for the EX-JW:
by rezrez inwhen you left the religion or cult, which religion did you convert to.
remember, i dont need to know why you left, i just want to which religion did you convert to.

Jeepthing
We did not convert to anything except that we still believe that God still exist and we still study the Bible as family and independently. We did a lot of researches and came to conclusion that all religions have some truth but not ultimate truth like they all claim and like jws. Realized that only one true religion do not exist and it only exist in individual's mind in their religion. Because we realized that they all have to claim to make themselves to be the one and only one to hold the authorities over people. We decided that only thing religions are good for is socialization and place to do things with others but with condition to accept what they teach and practice. Like signing a piece of a paper to say we will follow the rules for certain clubs or organization. Utimately, it is up to individual to seek God and understand Him and develop a personal relationship with Him and try to understand his ways. We(my husband and I) since kids are still young to comprehend all this religion stuff except for basic contents of the Bible, we just do our thing listen, read, and search like Bible recommend us to do. Also, wait. At least we feel like we are obligate to do that as His people. No more organized religion unless we want that social gathering which we could find in other secular places without us deeply getting involve in one particular organization(religion or not). We are free but yet we have an obligation towards God and His Son, price of being a free is responsibility and still accountable to God and that is our ways to look at things now days.

I'm meeting with the elders this Saturday
by Honesty inthat's right, guys and girls, i'm going to meet with at least two elders this saturday.. before you get ya britches in a big 'ol wad i can explain everything.. it's like this... well, a good friend asked me yesterday if i would be willing to meet with some jw's who have been having a 'bible study' with him for 5 or 6 weeks.
it appears that these jw's are elders and they have informed him that he is not a christian.
he asked them if they would be willing to discuss their beliefs with anyone and everyone so that he could be sure what they are telling him about not being a christian is true.

Yes, I am very much aware of original group still exit and I believe this It is true that jw religion was not an official religion until Rutherford but still the fact remains that it is started out with CTR. I think it is a good point to point out to any jw that it was not originated from very beginning of human couple as jws are claiming. I don't think any religion start out with any specific name but start out with good intention to change(reform) from parent group or orthodox of somekind. I think Catholic is a prime example of it. How many religions are formed form this one alone? Definition of religion is:the service and worship of God or the supernaural ;devotion to a religious faith; a personal set or institutionalized system of religious beliefs etc....at least from one source of dictionary. Anytime a group is expressing service to God is a religion. CTR was trying to interpret the Bible to figure out the prophecy of Christ coming and anticipating it. If he was not a believer of God and sharing than what was he doing. It was more than a movement. At least it is my understanding of what I learned. The Bible Student that still practice CTR teaching is not a movement anymore but another religion like rest of them.
