If I built an artificial intelligence and it choose as its mission to DESTROY ALL HUMANS. Would I be responsible in part for its actions?
If I had a birthday party for a child and filled a table with cupcakes and told all the little kids that the cupcake with red icing was poisoned would I be responsible for the death of the one kid that choose to eat the cupcake anyway? (I am pretty sure that I would go to jail.)
Why? I warned the kid that the cupcake was poisoned. He choose to eat it anyway. How is that my fault? I told the AI that Humans shouldn’t be destroyed, why is it my fault if he doesn’t listen?
IMO it is my fault because I am the responsible adult, and because I put in motion the events, because I gave the AI all the tools he needed to DESTROY ALL HUMANS. Because as the responsible adult I should protect the children and not give them poisoned cupcakes to eat.
God (if there is such a thing) not only gives us the tools and desires and ability to do “evil”. But then claims not to. He gave us a giant snake to play with and then said, “I didn’t give you a snake!”
God (if there is such a thing) is a jerk. He obviously wants us to kill him.
My point (if there is such a thing) is the reason it is so hard to reconcile the whole free will/evil thing is because if there is a God, then he/she is ultimately responsible for everything. Everything good and bad, brilliant and mediocre.

Evil, free will and the bible.
by Anti-Christ inmost christian and other deist will us the free will argument to explain the existence of god and evil.
in this topic i would like to examine the flaws in this argument.. what is free will?
it's the capacity of rational agents to choose a course of action from among various alternatives (that's one definition).

slower to chase down those that disagree?
by IMustBreakAway inperhaps this is a local phenomenon.
but it seems the elders are slower to chase down those that disagree, or have faded in the past few years.
i have heard (and seen) in the past where someone even remotely outspoken about disagreeing with the watchtower or some such would get the fury of divine retribution brought down upon them in an instant.

Interesting experiences. I have heard a few others lately as well. People being out and about for years and years and never getting any flak. Perhaps they have been instructed to wait until they catch a "sin" of some type. I have been skipping around "apostate" sites for years. And have made my opinion known to a few. (at least enough to let on that I had serious doubts). I always thought they would seek me out and destroy me. But I am hiding fine. Thinking about going a bit more vocal soon. Not to attract attention (well maybe a little) but to be more of myself around people that are supposed to be friends or family.

I have heard (and seen) in the past where someone even remotely outspoken about disagreeing with the watchtower or some such would get the fury of divine retribution brought down upon them in an instant. Witch hunts would follow, where anyone who knew the person even remotely would be brought in an raked over the coals. But in the last year or so I have noticed a few friends who go to most of the meetings, but rarely if ever go out in service, who cross stuff out of the watchtower that they don't like, and have VOCALLY disagreed with teachings seem to not be punished or even brought under scrutiny.
One example of this in a hall near to mine is someone I know, a girl in her mid 20's who has pretty much told the elders and others in the hall that she doesn't believe in god and isn't interested any more. But the elders aren't going after her. She was baptized young and has actually IMO been a key player in several young ones leaving the truth, (though they didn't leave as gracefully as she managed it).
Has anyone else noticed this? Or elders that are still in has there been some kind of directive that says not to go after such ones?
Just curious. -

Bye-Bye Brooklyn....were OUTTA there! Real Estate news.
by oompa ini was told today by a heavyweight elders wife, both of whom were at bethel for many years and are very well connected to the brooklyn brass, that all brooklyn bethel operations will be moved to wallkill and patterson.
in fact, there is a very exclusive walk-through next week for some of the top real estate investors/developers who will see all the properties, starting with the sands, and its lobby has now been remodeled to look just like a high-end hotel..................just fyi.................................oompa

Always knew those years of never donating a dime and ordering every book to heat my house would finally pay off. At the rate they are losing money I wonder if there is a few heavies at the top that are going to find a way to take the cash from the sale and then "leave the planet".

"Bad" songs at JW weddings
by B_Deserter inwhen i was in my teens, jw weddings were quite the social affair.
of course, the music was strictly regulated by the elders.
somehow though, in each wedding, someone managed to get the song "you shook me all night long" by ac/dc into the dj's rotation, and all of the "bad" witnesses would have a blast dancing to it.

LOL. I clicked on this thread thinking you were going to talk about BAD kingdom melodies played at weddings.. How many a bride have walked down the aisle at the kingdom hall to "The shulimite maiden."
I made up my own lyrics. (lord strike me down.)
"The shulimite maiden, so lovely and fair, how like the sand is your wavy brown hair. Were all dressed up now, and looking our best, hey remember that party where I touched your breasts, er I mean chest? Now I'll go to bethel and you'll pop out kids, and we'll both do our part to please the F&DS (pronounced FIDS, hey if they can make the T'wer sound then anything is game..)
Your new hubby's a loner, from some other town. But Your dad got him a job cleaning windows and ground. Excuse me I'm leaving going to drink myself sick, I hope for your sake sweetie he's got a big.........."

Who was it that said, "People once thought that thunder was the gods fighting and witches caused crops to fail but stopped believing in those things when science proved them wrong AND enough people thought the ideas were ridiculous."?
I think personally that labels like religion, or spirituality or ghost, or instinct, or talent are really just a clever way of saying. "Wow that's interesting, I have no idea how that works." But either people are afraid to say "I don't know" or their ego won't allow it, or the answer they have decided is satisfying for them.
For me saying something is the result of Religion/spirituality/god/instinct etc.. is like saying "I don't know, but the answer is up there on the top shelf in a book (ie possible to find through study, research, and verifiable evidence), but i don't feel like looking for it. (performing experiments etc..) So I'll be happy placing a label on it."
No disrespect to people that have found comfort and satisfaction in the answers they have found. That is awesome for them, at times i wish it worked that way for me. -

They Push You In,,,,Then Punish You If You Go!
by new boy inthey brag about the fact that they the don' t baptize their babies because "how can a baby 'know' what religion it wants to believe in the rest of it's life!".
but a 14 year old does?.....they put so much presure on their children to get dunked, that if your not baptize by 18 years old there is something really "wrong" with you.. so the poor kid does it, just to get everyone off their backs.
legally a minor can't be held to a contract if they are under 18 years old and why?

This is why it should be illegal to expose children to religious thought. Let them study it in college like philosophy or psychology.

My Memorial Experience
by oneairhead infirst of all i noticed that this just seemed like another meeting.
when we drove in we had people parking us in strange ways, not to mention that the amount of cars there was just as many as a highly attended sunday meeting and we do fine then when we have no one to park us.
they had more seats set out and there were no new ones just people who had not come in awhile.

Hehe.. Last assembly I went to there was only one kid getting baptised. It was a child of a JW family. It was so funny, when he/she stood to do the questions the speaker addressed them by name..
"ARE YOU JASON GOING TO DO WHAT THE GOVERNING BODY SAY'S, JASON? JASON ARE YOU AWAKE?"
*names changed to protect the innocent. :-)

At times I have heard people counter this with arguments about Hitler, Stalin and Chairman Mao. How they used atheism of sorts and are responsible for a number of deaths as well. But I don’t really think what they used was atheism, or agnosticism in its truthful form. They tried to replace religion with worship of the state. More important than people believing in God or not believing in God is that people come to their decision rationally and after much thought. It is blind faith IMO that leads to atrocity, whether that blind faith is placed in a God, or a man representing God, or a lack of God, or the state, etc… The sad bit is that 5% tend to lead the other 95%

It looks like I will become an elder this week!
by outofthebox inthat's right guys.
as i told you before, they boe have been considering me for the eldership.
which i don't care for, but since my family is stuck in this cult, i guess i can use the new position to help them see that the holy spirit has nothing to do with me being an elder.

I am not wise, and all knowing enough to question your motives... So..
Let them be noble and GOOD LUCK!
