Balsam, was this CO, Bennett named Dennis Bennett, and was he British? Just curious. We had one fitting this description when I was a child, and he wasn't too friendly either.

Best, worst and weirdest assembly halls...
by Jamelle ina recent thread about the experience of attending the 1969 convention as a young child really started me thinking.
i have several fuzzy memories of assemblies i attended as very young child.
this got me onto the track of the rather odd, uncomfortable or even really cool buildings i have visited over the years as a result of those conventions.. so my questions to everyone are:.

Hey, Jamelle, small world! I remember Cicero race track too! I moved out of state before they started going to Romeoville, but my parents still go there. And that beautiful old theatre... are you thinking of the Assembly Hall at 79th and South Ashland Ave? It was a haven of lovely chandeliers and murals and all plush inside, with a grand staircase going up to the restrooms, but it was really dangerous for the "friends" coming up from Indiana or the south suburbs! Ashland Ave. was tenements and slums, ya know, those 3 story brownstones with the scary alleys and the rickety porches out back. There was a fenced parking lot for the Witnesses across the street, but you had to make it back and forth! Do you know if they sold it, and replaced it with the Jehovahdome in Romeoville?

Fried chicken & and slice of white bread
by MissBehave inanother thread today made me think of this....does it bring back memories for anyone else?
it was the staple food of every assembly i remember.
they made them in the morning and by lunch time the bread had absorbed all the grease from the chicken.

I beg your pardon, but your breast is in my eye!!!
by Scully inok, so i'm at the dentist this afternoon - nothing major, just something i've been putting off for a while - and the dental assistant is doing her thing with my teeth - my mouth is wired open (i think i was able to tune into radio transmissions for a while) - and i've got my eyes closed, my glasses off, trying to relax in the chair, while listening to the piped in muzak.. suddenly, i can tell she's really getting into her work - she's leaning against my face and getting quite vigorous about whatever she's doing to my tooth.
then it dawned on me.... ummm... hello.... your breast is in my eye!!!
except my mouth is frozen and wired so that all that's coming out is unintelligible garble... and drool (from being wired open, not because it's the least bit "interesting").. so i'm thinking to myself, if i push her away from my face, she looks the type that would clock me for sexually harassing her... if i say anything to her about it, she'll be embarrassed and might screw up my tooth... if i wait a couple more minutes, she'll be done and i might have an interesting story to share with mr scully... finally, it occurs to me that they said i could give them a signal to stop what they are doing.

What happened in the 80's?
by Virgochik invarious posters have mentioned how get-togethers and fun times socializing were frowned upon and discouraged somewhere around the early 80's.
everything changed, as far as the picnics, the dinner parties, etc.
i vaguely recall some connection being made to parties and increased "immorality.

Ohmogod, Leolaia, I find that article just unbelievable. Not only have they spoiled innocent socializing, but now they are even turning the evil eye upon wedding anniversaries! There might be drinking, and the poor friends would be forced to misbehave like (gasp) homosexuals! If a few drinks brought that out in those brothers, they had wanted to do whatever they did long before that! Good for them, anyway! What next will they turn a pruneface to? Ah! Weddings must be spoiled next, what else is left? What a dismal life it must be currently for the poor Dubs.

Well, it seems to be pretty much universal then! All work and no play makes Jack a good Witless boy, lol!

Oh, I really screwed up on this one. What should I do?
by stilllying inok, here is a quick synopsis.
i was born and raised "in the truth".
i was df when i was 17 and moved away, got married, had kids etc....i came back into the "truth" at around 27 out of guilt and a strong need/desire to speak with my mother, father and sister again but since they lived back east and i lived out west they didn't really know that after a few years i became inactive again and now that dad's passed away and mom is sick i don't have the heart to tell them that i haven't been to a single meeting in over 10 years (except for the ones i go to when i go back to visit them and pretend like everything is aok and i am 100% yada,, yada, yada) any way, i just told my mom that me and the family are going on a cruise over spring break and you guessed it, she says, "oh no, you are going to miss the .....memorial!!!!????

Good idea, say you will make sure to attend at the port of call. She won't ask for photos, will she?

Haha, well, I was raised in Indiana, just around the Lake from Chicago. We always said pop. As for our skating parties, those went kaputt because there had been some (gasp) hand holding while gliding around the rink.

I got invited to a house party while an elder's daughter.Earth WInd and Fire had a new record (yes, a vinyl record, lol) out. There were four girls in this family and they could really dance and have a good time. They served chips and pop and pizza, the usual snacks, we played Bible charades, Go Fish, Uno, etc. Rumor had it, there had been something "unseemly" about that party, and they were encouraged not to have any more. It was all hush-hush what exactly the problem was, but I guess they thought I complained about something. I didn't, but when my dad came to pick me up, his eyebrow was up about the musiic. I'll bet they had more parties, but didn't invite any elders' kids next time!
