Anyone have a PDF or photocopy of the "by laws" BOBCAT cites in this thread?
Just curious. . . . .
I have access to get them. What state would you like?
perhaps this was already discussed in another thread, if so i apologize in advance; but i was visiting some family several months back and we get into a conversation about their local congregation.
one of my family members helps with some of the book keeping in that congregation.
after a while he started talking about how the elders received some wierd letter from the society stating something to the effect that the congregation must put together or enforcing something for "corporate by laws" or "congregation by laws" - i'm not sure which.

Yea, they had some announcement about that at our hall a week or 2 ago. Posted the by-laws on the board. I actually went up and read the whole thing, much to the surprise of our COBE, who "figured nobody would wanna read that stuff". Looks like standard legal stuff about the congregation having a board of directors, how they are elected, procedure for replacements, how expenses are handled, voting on expenses/procedureal changes, etc.
Kate, I believe the official word on that is that it wouldn't be an evil divorcing, since (according to JWs) a homosexual marrage is not scripturally valid to begin with.
on another thread, i read that a few adherents may be traveling (cough-cough) to other cities and wouldn't be able to make field service on christmas day.. what is the likelihood that going out on christmas will be encouraged at the weekend services at the khs?
...or do most halls stay neutral on this?
given what i've read on this forum, i have the impression that disrespecting a day of other's celebration wouldn't be discouraged which annoys the heck out of me..
Yep, it still goes on. Usually 10 a.m. on holidays.
I never go (hell, I barely go in field circus at all - making up numbers to write on a piece of paper is much easier).
didn't know if this has been addressed before , but it's kinda interesting.
when we were witnesses we were always told,oh!
don't look at horoscopes or read anything about your sign because it's demonized !

faking of hours in field service or dragging service time out by making coffee stops or driving for hours "between" household contacts are never frowned upon, let alone mentioned, in the publications.
.
yet, in each congregation of jehovah's witnesses, to one degree or another, faking hours, padding time out with coffee stops and long journeys between opportunities to "witness" are endemic practices..
.... I wonder how long before someone notices that I am putting in 25-30 hours a month but am never seen at the beatings for field circus?
i was thinking about all the accounts in the bible that indicate god kills children as a punishment or teaching experience.
1. kills all of egypts firstborn sons, who were innocent kids who did nothing to him or his people, who had no control over the decisions pharoah made.
how many times have you read that account or thought about it without realizing the devastating pain dealt to all those parents, and remembered those were innocent kids?.
I never tire of occasions to use this:
"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it, a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." - Richard Dawkins
i attended a funeral today for a small child, whose death was an unspeakable tragedy.
it was my first non-jw funeral and indeed the first time i'd ever been in a church.
i couldn't even comprehend what the parents must be going through.
So sorry to hear about this, dissonance. For a parent to have to bury their child is one of the saddest things in the world. My thoughts go out to them.

Also, I agree. JW funerals are such a disrespectful affront to the dead. They turn the whole thing into a recruitment drive.
a religious person carries with them a concern (reasonably should be concerned) that non-believers do not share.. for the religious believer there is a very real dimension of beings who are actively invasive in human affairs.. these beings are angels, demons, jinns, gods, spirits, ghosts---you name it--scrutinizing our every move, reading our minds (some say) and.
greatly aroused by women in a sexual way!.
indeed, the scriptures do not blush to inform us that angels lusted after women in times past and impregnated them successfully!.

Are all gods like this? or just the Jehovahist one?
Christ seems a nice fellow, if a bit naive about human nature. It's his followers that made all the daft sex rules, IIRC.
And while my particular batch of gods, as with most pagan pantheons, is known to have a fondness for mortal women, they generally tend to have better things to do than poking around human minds, or watching us 24/7. So long as proper sacrifice and homage is rendered, they're cool.
was just talking to a jw who just got back from oklahoma doing relief work for jws who had their homes damaged.
i didn't know this, but he said that the process goes like this.
the homeowner usually has a payout from the insurance company in hand.
Funny how this is never mentioned in all those videos and articles about the "relief work" - yea, relieving you of $$$
