Geeky things you did when you were a kid

we were a very geeky bunch of late 70's-early 80's suburban american white boys in my neighborhood where i grew up.. but my all time favorite one that makes me laugh every time i think about it, was how we rigged up parachutes to our bikes using twine and trash bags.

we would ride down the street as fast as we could, and then let the parachute out, which was tied to the end of our banana seat.

we thought we were cool funny car racers.. another one was inventing a previously unheard of cuss word that we could use around adults while winking at each other and giggling.

Using floaties to try to walk on water - that is hilarious!

The go-kart experience reminded me of when I went to a friend's birthday party when I was about 7 or so. His parents had got him a little mini dirt bike (motorized). I got on it and started riding it, but nobody had told me how to stop it, and I ended up crashing it, much to my friend's dismay. His parents just laughed, they thought I was a funny kid.

Your swimming pool experience reminded me of how I got a Speedo swim suit (the kind that looks like ladies panties instead of shorts) when I was 12. I was a skinny skinny skinny kid who had no business wearing a Speedo. People just stared, I think they felt sorry for me! "Don't his parents feed him?" was what they must have wondered to themselves.

But so far I think Dolphin57 is the geekiest. The bedroom DJ, too much! That reminded me of how I made a fake guitar for myself and would play along with the MTV.

Anybody else?

The Worst Conundrum EVER!

there's this guy i know, we'll call him placebo for now, as that's his nick online, who i'm pretty good friends with.

he comes to our monthly graphics programmer meetups that we have in johannesburg quite a lot.

i dont know about you guys but im starting to get the feeling that a big fallaway is on the cards in the wt world what with all the recent scandals and the advent of the internet , information is so readily available to those in developed countries ,i feel that especially in developed nations the wt will suffer huge losses due to apathy and their extreme stand on so many issues, that many will become sick and tired of the wt treadmill of life which is so far away from the simplistic beauty of biblical christianity what do you think?

Don't hold your breath. Many have left, but many will stay on to the bitter end. Years of indoctrination don't evaporate overnight. And with things looking the way they are in the world, who knows? Maybe the 'great tribulation' that JW's and fundies have been eagerly expecting may happen.

i sit here and wonder, if i only would have went on my gut feeling years ago but i didnt.

just the way everthing was handled from top to bottom the lives they have destoyed.

its amazing, when you reflect.

I had red flags going up left and right when I was studying Watchtowerism. Like a lot of people, I ignored them.

The WT offered something I desperately needed at the time - structure.

I'd probably be dead from suicide if I hadn't become a JW. But I'm glad I finally had the courage to finally start paying attention to those red flags.

I am a Former Addict

i quit smoking 3 days ago.

it was not as difficult as i thought it was going to be.

i have tried to break the habit before but always gave up, thinking that i was hopelessly addicted.

I am off cigs for a month now. I don't even think about them. In my mind I am a non-smoker, simple as that.

I think that your internal dialogue is the most important thing when you are trying to quit. If you tell yourself that you're dying for a cigarette and that you're never going to make it, then you won't. Stand up to that self-defeating inner voice. Tell it, I AM A NON-SMOKER NOW!!! SO GET LOST YOU BADDY!!!!

Am i the only one the has been very disappointed with all of the new Star Wars movies?

I just got around to seeing Revenge of the Clones or Attack of the Clones or whatever. Awful. Just awful. At least half-an-hour too long, and some of the worst acting I've ever seen. OK George Lucas & co., you know how to computer animate. We get it.

Thank you all for your kind responses. I'm basking in reflective glory right now, OSU having bagged a national championship and all, so I'm feeling a little better.

When I investigated the WT and found out what a crock of sh!t it was, (and kicked myself for not seeing some things that were right in front of my face) it was so liberating. What I failed to realize was that life is still life whether you're JW, Christian fundie, Hare Krishna or whatever. I am an addiction-inclined person by nature, and the WT filled that addictive void. I have nothing filling that void right now, for the first time in my adult life I'm without crutches. Some days are better than others. When I started this thread yesterday I was in hell.

I'm reading Feeling Good, the New Mood Therapy right now. The essence of the book is that our emotions follow our thoughts, so to cure your emotional ills you have to change your thinking. Hopefully some of the advice it contains can help me break these crazy thinking patterns that my mind gets so locked into.
