were you raised as a jw, like me, or were you converted (at least i have an excuse)?
I was attending community college and met a girl who was studying Watchtowerism and she was very much on her Watchtower honeymoon - very zealous. I got her phone #, called her up one night and she proceeded to witness to me for about 3 hours. She was very kind and sincere about it, I was totally blown away by what she was telling me. I went to a couple of meetings at the KH that she attended, experienced the love bombing, and less than a year later I took the plunge. She also got dunked around the same time, DA'd about a year later. I hung around 10 years, but wasn't much of a true believer after the first 5.
How I wish George Orwell was alive today, little did he know that it wouldn't be governments fulfilling his prophetic vision, it would be crackpot religious cults like the Watchtower!!! BIG MOTHER HAS SPOKEN!!!

when you were associated in the congregation, were you treated in a way that made you feel like you were a 2nd class citizen?
how were you regarded?
were you the brunt of criticism or were you pretty much well-liked?
I was always being stumbled over something. Some people liked me, the social club JW cliques never had any use for me. I was never in the "in" crowd, never close, until my last congo, but by then I was on my way out and I didn't care, maybe that's why I started to fit in a little better!
Mimilly, I think I know what the bro meant about you being bewitching. There is a sis in my area, in her 50's now, on her 4th husband (to a dude 20 years younger), men go **CRAZY** over her everywhere she goes, even now. It's more than just her prettiness, she has a certain something that mesmerizes. Men want to have sex with her so bad they'd just about be willing to die to have her one time. It isn't anything she does consciously, it's just her.

i did again 2 days ago, as she needed to go to the mall with a friend for back-to-school shopping.
One thing I've found since leaving the borg is that the perception that JW's, some Born-Agains, and conservatives/fundies have of the more liberal mainstream Protestant denoms (like the Evangelical Lutherans whose services I often attend) is not accurate. That perception being, that mainstream Protestants aren't "serious" about their faith, that they just go to church to have their ears tickled. I can tell you from experience that many mainstream Protestants struggle with their faith on much more deep and profound levels than the conservative/fundie crowd, and hence, imho, have a stronger, more resilient, more real faith. However, it is more of an experiential faith, not legalistic and dogmatic. And the faith of these persons is free of the groupthink collective fanaticism that imho is the hallmark of the woohoo Jesus churches.

i'm a newbie that's been lurking here for a couple of weeks, trying to get up the nerve to post.i've made the decision to da myself after months of thought and research.i'm not familiar with the procedure,though.is there anything that any of you feel is particularly important for me to know?do i have to go before a jc to da?if i refuse to,will they just df me?i prefer to make it clear that i am the one who is voluntarily leaving, but having been a victim of the kangaroo court proceedings on other occasions, i just can't bring myself to put myself in the elder's "loving" hands again (a story for another day).i'm fortunate that none of my family members are baptised or even active witnesses at this point.. any input would be much appreciated.. cicatrix

The closure was necessary for me in that I needed to shut the door behind me on the way out.
I can see the matter both ways. My attitude towards disassociation often varies from day to day.
I would definitely concede that disassociating oneself should not be done in haste.

I DA'd, and I don't regret it. I felt like I needed to make a statement, as well as give myself some closure. I'm sure it shocked the hell out of a lot of people, and that is exactly what I intended. I hope it caused them some serious cognitive dissonance.
Many that are in have serious doubts that they put on the back burner because they're so fearful. Disassociating tells them that you're no longer afraid of them and the hate-god that they worship, and it may embolden ones who are having doubts. I don't know you or all the details of your situation, but in my case, when I awoke to the fraud that is the WTBTS, I didn't want people to assume that I was weak because they weren't seeing me at meetings anymore.
i'm kind of burnt out from being pissed off at jws.
tonight, while talking to a friend who left at the same time i did (several years ago), we both spoke of our apathy towards the whole anti-witness movement.
recently i helped in several anti-jw actions, and i thought i made a difference, although it was a pittens compared to others who have come before.

Thanks for your post. I can relate to how you feel. I think that sometimes the exjw movement is lacking in patience (myself included). How we would all love to see the borg come crashing down in a single day, like the walls of Jericho. That realistically is not going to happen.
A few months ago, somebody started posting here, I can't remember what their screen name was. He/she was studying Watchtowerism, and wasn't sure about some things, and they had found this website. The end result was that they discontinued their study. This shows that collectively we are making a difference. The more people that post here, the more diverse the experiences and opinions, the more likely a doubting lurker will be able to find a poster they relate to. We all contribute in a small way. There are many instances of persons who came here (or to H20, or Channel C), thinking they were gonna find out how wrong and wacked out 'postates are, only to have their eyes slowly opened to what a wicked religious org they're involved with. One person at a time!
This place was so helpful for me in getting out, I don't know what I would have done without it. It was SO nice finding so many people who came to feel the same way I did about the WT, that it is a smothering, abusive CULT. The WT propagandized us to death about how evil 'postates are. So untrue.
I may be experiencing something similar to you, kind of an "OK, what now?" sort of feeling. I don't want to live in my JW past for the rest of my life, but when you spend years in an org that directed your every waking minute, it is hard to adjust to the freedom.
