Not to nitpick, but Taiwan and Malaysia are hardly poor. The per capita GDP for both countries is relatively high, esp Taiwan where it is over $30k.
I've read comments on this board that the boom-and-bust of JWism in Japan is due to the Japanese people's tendency to always be chasing fads, even religious ones. I guess JWism was faddish there for a few years, but now the trend has obviously passed. Sweet!

Give me a reason not to have an affair/one night stand
by mtsgrad ini am extremely close to having an affair.
let me give you some details.. been married for 8 years.
not had any relations for 7. faded 3 years ago.. in middle of getting divorced.
-

I agree with Gregor, Lola, others. If marriage means anything to you at all as an institution, even if the one you're in has been a disaster, then I think you'd be hurting your conscience if you did the deed before the divorce is final.

Depression or Recession?
by lisavegas420 ini went to jobs and family resources yesterday.
the man i talked to said the country is not in a recession like the president said on december 1st.
he said we are in a depression, much like 1947. he said things will continue like this for decades.

Lisa, I feel your pain btw. I'm in a bit of a protective bubble here in Columbus where the job market is still decent (at least for now), but I can only imagine that things are pretty bad in the smaller Ohio towns such as where u live.

I hope that the "bubble" era is over. When people were making loads of money in the 1990's off of silly internet startups, I thought to myself, this isn't grounded in reality. When people were making loads of money in the 2000's off of flipping houses and silly real estate speculation, I thought to myself, this isn't grounded in reality. When the Dow went above 10k, then 12k, then 14k, I thought to myself, this isn't grounded in reality.

My JW Mom Sends us Nice Letter ; But Gets Her Time in Preaching Too !
by flipper inthis is the first time in my 5 years of fading my mom has tried to even " hint " at witnessing to me in a letter !
she is 81 yrs.old , has respected my fade , i have been able to talk to her about anything , and she knows i'm not going to go back to the witnesses - so this was a bit surprising .
i won't worry too much - she's just doing what she's told i guess.

I don't know your grandmum but I'd guess that she's a classic case of the schizophrenic JW mentality regarding what exactly Armageddon means for the 6 billion plus people in the world that don't identify themselves as JW's. On the one hand, she speaks of the "great battle" and "seeing the smoke coming before the flames" and "preparing yourself & loved ones for a safe outcome". But, if you were to ask her point-blank, are all non-JW's going to be killed at Armageddon, what would her reponse be?

Thought I'd properly introduce myself
by JW Walking Away ini have been lurking on this site for nearly a year now and finally feel comfortable enough to begin posting.
so i thought a little introduction would be appropriate.
my whole family, except for my two sisters, are jw's.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Nobody here is surprised by the uncaring attitude of the elders.
Without even really knowing why, I decided I no longer wanted to be a JW. So at the beginning of this year I just left, never stepped foot in a kingdom hall again.
Same thing happened to me around January of 2002. I knew there was something so wrong about JWism, even if I couldn't articulate exactly what it was, I just couldn't stand it any more.

Goodbye to JWD ... hello to JWN !
by Simon inas i announced some time ago, jwd as it is will not continue .... ... but .... it's clear from people's comments that they do like the site and many would like it or something else like it to continue.. one issue was the forum software that was self-developed and not really in a good state to hand-over to anyone but i've been working on that and can now reveal the first release of what will probably be called jwn (son of jwd):.
http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/.
it is still work-in-progress so not all features are enabled yet but it will allow you to browse the site in a similar way to this one and it is pointing at the same database (although because of the way the caching works, new posts made on this site won't appear immediately).

Looks great! You're a jolly good fellow Simon.
And for the bros at UK Bethel who allegedly high-fived at the news of JWD closing:

Current JW debating me on Google
by besty inhttps://knol.google.com/k/paul-morrison/why-jehovahs-witnesses-shun-people/290ks3g12r97j/3#.
feel free to post a reply at the bottom.... helpful discussions are not found at that website or other antijw sites.
i heard that it is shutting down because it collapsed from its own hatred that it creates.

Breach of JW rules? The fact is that there are no rules.
"there are no rules" - ask him if he'd be willing to distribute 100 copies of Crisis of Conscience to the JW's in his congregation then.
This guy is obviously extremely self-deluded over the authoritarian relationship between the WTS and JW's...but your calm, well-reasoned replies are good for others that might be observing the discussion.

One of the best concerts I ever saw was The Steve Miller Band, which surprised me because I've never been more than a casual fan, but his backing group was top-notch and they put on a great, fun show. I think this was around 1997 or 1998. I actually went to the concert to see Eric Johnson who opened, and I was disappointed with his performance frankly.
I saw my idol Joe Satriani back in 2005. I have to admit that I don't care for his squawky live guitar tone, and two hours of him wailing away, soloing like mad all over the place got to be a little too much. I'll stick with listening to his studio recordings.
