Thanks for posting this, nvrgnbk. I didn't notice this thread previously. I'm going to see if I can find the book - it sounds very interesting.

this book by eugen weber is very important.
it dedicates only two or three paragraphs to j.w.s.
for that very reason it's a good read for those who are undecided.

i think most of you already know what i have been planning.
i have mentioned it somewhat already.
i have sent bits of pieces of my story to several christian ministries, and they want to know more.
Junction-Guy and junctions-wife, even if you don't get back together again, I hope at some stage in the future you give each other a really big hug.

the watchtower claims speaking in tongues was restricted to the first century, though it seems quite clear that this was something to be practiced in the last days.
should christians today speak in tongues and what exactly is it?
i am wondering about the reasoning as some christian religions practice it and others don't.
I believe people who speak in tongues are entering an altered state of consciousness and being under the influence of their surroundings (including power of suggestion) start "speaking in tongues."
I overheard people "contacting the dead" on several occasions. To me, it sounded like they were in a trance, making unintelligible sounds - including screams. Had I still been a witness I would have thought there were demons. I was also told that I would probably have "spirits" in my house due to my close proximity to these people. Nothing ever happened. I would put speaking in tongues in a similar category to contacting the dead.
Being non-religious now, I believe there are logical explanations for most things.

my sister and i were raised in the "truth", by our mother alone, working for minimum wage.
as a young child, i remember being give a dollar or two every week to put in the contribution box at the kh, my mother was making $40 to $60 a week and gave that cult $2, plus the gas for fs, plus the cost of books and magazines.
we had 6 6' tall bookcases all full of the watchtower and awake annual volumes, back to the 50's or 40's, plus every book the wtbts ever published.
Thank you for telling your story. It was enjoyable to read and would be an inspiration to some of the young ones on JWD who are struggling.

been off-air mopping up since last night.
the mother of all storms hit us and quite suddenly - one minute it was hot (as usual lately), the next all went dark and the most violent of thunderstorms hit us.
in a time of drought this was some reversal!
Beautiful pictures, Ozzie. Wish you could send some of that rain down to South Australia. We're still in drought with tough water restrictions. People are watering their backyards with water recycled from the kitchen and laundry.

this is great.
i was suffering through an interminably long sunday p.m. public talk (we flip-flopped w/ the other cong--at least sunday a.m. was a little more tolerable because there was still some of the day left to do something).
the speaker was talking about "physical training being beneficial for a little" and how some exercise was necessary.
Alpaca, welcome to JWD!
I am trying to figure this board out.
There are all types here. And everything is discussed, from humour to the sad and serious business of leaving "the truth".
Look forward to hearing more from you.

i'll be showering in the dark.
i'll be going to bed about eight-thirty.
I start work at 8.00am. I thought that was bad enough!

Don't worry about what the family thinks regarding whether you have a girlfriend or not. Family members can say the most hurtful things and these should be disregarded.
Also, sounds to me like Amanda is still a really good friend to you. This is something to treasure.

i will try to make this brief but how can you abbreviate love and kindness?
this is truly amazing!!!!
as many you have seen i ran into a small glitch on the forum the last couple of threads, without going into detail and really not necessary as there have been plenty of comments and views on both threads, i was willing to walk away from the forum because this is my nature as paul said in .
You get more love here in 5 minutes than in the WTS in 5 years. Glad you're staying, abr.
