i don't usuallypost about personal issues; i am still fading; besides, i was raised in a family that would say we were doing well even if our house was burning down.. for the last month i have been stressing about seeing family from the west coast; my brother, out for many years but now back in and gung ho, is bringing his son and daughter out.
family reunion, of sorts.
i wanted to host, but then i realized that my disfellowshipped daughter would not be included.
I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. Sorry to hear about all of the drama that you have to deal with now too. I wish I had some good advice to give you, but I'm afraid I'm at a loss for words. Just wanted to tell you that you have my sympathies. I wish you the best.

I couldn't agree more. It is stunning how the conventions always stress the need to give absolute allegiance to the organization. The baptismal questions are a glaring example of this. The concept of gaining salvation through organizational membership appears nowhere in the New Testament.
The JW religion has metamorphosed into something very similar to the Communist Party under Chariman Mao. Allegiance and conformity to the "mother organization" has been put above the person's true heart condition and personal relationship with God.
If this doesn't constitute idolatry, then I don't know what does.
hello dear friends... well, many of you are aware of my on going daily saga.
my husband and i left the organization about a year and a half ago.
we have not been disfellowshipped, nor have we disassociated ourselves.
We breifly exchanged how our families were, then before we hung up, I told her that I was sure she probably had heard many rumors about us. And that they were all lies. She said that was good to hear and that she would keep that in mind.
My question is this: If she had heard many of these rumors already, why would she approach you to want to go out to dinner with you? It just sounds very suspicious. But, then again, maybe they just really miss you two. Why not just go ahead and go; but don't give them any information that they can use as ammunition.

I personally do not think that it's okay to take shots at people just because they don't have a good / high paying job. I have many personal friends (non-Witnesses) who have menial type jobs. They are really good, decent, honest, and hard working people who I respect.
I think that we sometimes get into this issue whenever we talk about how the WTS has actively discouraged Witnesses from higher education. This is something that I have bitterly resented about the WTS, even while I was still a Witness. There are many Witnesses who could have gotten a better education, but chose not to because they seriously believed that they were following the counsel of the Almight God himself.
However, I have personally observed many Witnesses who have displayed an open hostility to any kind of higher learning or education. Many of them have seemed to have a perverse pride in being uneducated and not being very intelligent. It's a bizarre form of arrogance in reverse. These are individuals that have never done any kind of independent research into world history, mythology, and archeology. These are people that I chose to criticize; not for the kind of jobs they hold, but because of the arrogant and narrow-minded attitude that they have shown toward having a basic knowledge about the world around them.

One of the best books (in my opinion) that addresses this issue is "Who Wrote The Bible" by Richard Elliott Friedman. Friedman explains in detail the Documentary Hypothesis which outlines the four different writers who were the likely authors of the Torah.
In my opinion, the Documentary Hypothesis is a valuable method of explaining the various dichotomies of the Old Testament; such as the two creation accounts, two flood accouts, as well as other doublets that occur. The two variations of the Ten Commandments are discussed at great length by Friedman in his book.
