Though my wife has never been baptized, she has a shelf of wt publications as well as watchtowers and awakes.
Are these magazines to be kept by a jw forever??

what a waste of living being "in the truth" was!
sometimes i see persons suggesting that the witness religion isn't all so wrong.
actually they suggest that they themselves are the issue.
Well stated Mary and thanks!!!!!
If we all thought the same about everything, this board would not be necessary, it is our diversity that makes this not only a great place for information, but also a great group of people!
i have posted some thoughts on this on earlier threads, but the pesky jws have approached my wife about a bible study again, but my wife has let them know that this time she wants to learn how to read the bible and then after she is able to do that, she may consider some of the other books.
i have a couple of concerns about this, firstly, from what i know, the jws consider reading thier literature on a par with reading the bible, in fact i am pretty sure that they will try to lead her back to the bible teach book and let her know that she is in essence getting the same 'food' this way as she would another way.. secondly, if she decides to study the bible, the questions from readers that has recently come out all but prohibiting independent bible study will most likely come into play.
witnessgirl provided a good course on this, let my wife know that we are going to read the bible, not study, which could be a loophole (but i doubt if she asks a jw about that they would see a difference, but my stubborn wife may), but i think my wife would say she wants to study, not read....... a pesky jw provided her with her copy of the insight books and she also has the reasoning book, but i want her to actually feel she can read the bible and take from it what the literature presents in itself, not the slant that any organization or person wants her to take from it, even though if she reads the nwt version (or really any version for that matter) there is already a man provided slant.
Pretty sure it was that one, the one that advised against independent study.

Chickpea,
It does, and you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Society does a terrible job of accepting folks for who they are or who they want to be, and you made the key point, he is still a person regardless, and for that reason alone, is due the respect and love that everyone else is.
ISOT
this is actually wt's real name.
wt has become actually a social club and nothing more.
jws are in a "religious" club with activities that includes picnics, staying in hotels(assembley) going out for leasure, excursions in the "holy land- brooklyn".
I can fully agree with what is being stated here, my wife's family is pretty much all jdub, but she has never been baptized. When she gets bored around the house (generally between semesters of school) is when she all of a sudden calls up one of the sisters she has known in the past for a bs.....
Rather than looking for something else, I think she enjoys having the jw come over to our place and in essence kiss her tail while making her feel 'so smart' for the wonderful answers she gives.
in your opinon......................should i go through with it..................................(hi simon.....long time).
on august 4th of 2008 at approximately 8:00-8:10am i was coming from the front office after receiving a green sheet for being absent on thursday, july 31st 2008. i was passing the women's restroom on my way back to class, when i saw steve walking the barren hallways.
he didn't notice me since i was walking far behind him.
I concur, report it not only for yourself, but for others that may have been assaulted and have not reported it, and to prevent future instances.

Part of the value of this site is the ability of a diverse community being able to make comments and share their viewpoints in an open, generally uplifting environment. I find it disturbing when one can not accept the viewpoint of another, you may decide to disagree, but one does not need to get rude about it.
Viewpoints of folks like stilla are very critical to the success of this board, having folks who are active witnesses but see problems in the organization are not only great for the knowledge base of this board, but also for the witnesses as a whole, because like it or not, there are some favorable characteristics that people could learn from people in the organization, not the organization as a whole however.
IMHO the organization is at a crossroads right now, are they going to slowly drift towards a more mainstream faith, or are they going to become even a more high control organization than they already are, causing more damage to the present members as well as future converts.
The members of this board can help not only other board members, but many others by practicing openness, acceptance and compassion towards all, if we become intolerant of folks who have opinions or beliefs other than our own, we are becoming exactly what a lot of the folks here do not like about the WTS.
i am mature adult and have been living with a j.w.
for the past 3.5 years.
when we meet he was not practicing has not practice for some few years.
I am married to a gal who has many family members who are JWs and she yo-yos in and out of bible studies and has attended a couple of meetings here and there. When she is 'dubbed up' she is a totally different person than she normally is. I would be open to her being of almost any faith that is truly respectful of people, but the jws are very against any other religion. I have told her that really bothers me and when she is in the cult mode, she gets very defensive.
It is a dangerous organization and I have been working for about 2 years (not as hard as I should be) to extract her from the fringes of the org.....not as easily done as said!
But you have come to the right place, lots of great people and post any question or concern you may have...

Maybe the post title should have been why is anything but the Bible needed to read the Bible???

I have read some wt quotes about the danger of reading the bible on one's own and how it could make one apostate....and I can see given how it reads when not proof texted, it will bring someone there.
Is there scripture that I could site that shows that the bible is not written for an organization to interpret, but is written for each and every person who wants to read it, and that help texts may be of value, but are not always necessary and definitely not required for ones reading of the bible........
