For those who have less restrictive policy, how do they justify the disagreement with the 'bible based literature'? Isn't it thought that the WT literature is all but equivalent to the Bible?

Where does one draw the line on whether the origins of a practice make it acceptable?
by insearchoftruth inok, am very confused:.
honeymoons and wedding rings, based in paganism, ok for a jw to do.. windchimes, once prohibited due to the intent to ward off evil spirits, ok for a jw to have.. pinatas, once prohibited due to origin, now since folks do not associate the fun with a pinata, ok for a jw to do.. wedding anniversaries, not sure if they are formally addressed in the bible, ok for a jw to do.. birthdays, two bad examples in the bible plus some stories how originally celebrated by the wealthy (choose to ignore job 1 - job 3 when a persons special day is celebrated), not ok for a jw to do (have not been at a birthday party ever where someone was beheaded).
thanksgiving, actually a basis in the old testament for a celebration of the harvest, not ok for jws to do.

Sigh
by wantarevolution ini'm tired, i'm tired of feeling guilty all the time, tired of feeling manipulated into doing something that i am sure that i do not want to do anymore.. i am just back from a few days in madrid at our assembly.
despite myself i found myself enjoying some of the talks - particulary some on saturday.
but probably not the right reasons.

is the bible lying here?
I think the Bible is a wonderful piece of literature as a guideline for ones life, but not a textbook. There are many issues with what the book tells us, and all religions (yes the JWs included) that 'base themselves on the Bible' pick and choose the parts that they want to follow.
IMHO, the WTS is extremely guilty of this practice because if the Bible is such a wonderful book, why has there been a concerted effort for 130 years plus to create 'Bible based literature' by a group of men in Brooklyn, in volumes so much greater than a book that does not change.....but they have even changed that book to suit thier needs.

You have learned that in the WTS there are the written rules and the unwritten rules.
Will some congregations have less restrictive policies than those written, or is it always the case where they may be more restrictive.

You need to either rely on past practice and precedence or ignore it completely, but the WTS seems to speak out of both sides of its collective GB mouth.......

District Convention ruminations
by sir82 inif y'all can stand one more dc thread, i thought i'd post some miscellaneous rumbling ramblings about this year's edition.. to protect my privacy, i'd prefer not to disclose the location - pm me if interested.. ***** attendance, as in all other years i can remember, was much lower on friday than the other days.
in fact, the attendance was 22% lower on friday than on sunday.
so, as usual, they hammered home the point about the importance of attending all 3 days....on friday!

They need to open their minds and see that this is a wonderful world that we live in.
Very true Hecklerboy......the world may have its faults, but as a whole it is pretty good.....much better than the dark ages.
Since my wife has been studying again, her attitude on about everything really sucks, and I can understand, if all you ever hear is the bad points about everything......

Hey vikesgirl, sounds like you may not be ready.
I lived with my wife about six months prior to getting married, and there were children involved from her side, not sure if it was a good idea. She was a JW apologetic at that time, now she is an uberzealous study.....
