The GB and their Last Supper
by Clam inive sometimes wondered how the governing body would celebrate the memorial.
i imagine that they would probably all be together, perhaps dressed in robes with fake haloes; possibly made from old wire coat hangers and tinsel.
in this way, along with the bread, wine and nisan the 14th thing, theyd be going for realism.

Quick survey for apostates - please everyone just yes or no answer
by slimboyfat indo the other witnesses with whom you associate/once associated in general know that you are an apostate or have apostate inclinations?
the reason for the phrase "in general" is that it may be the case that one or two close friends know how you feel, but others in general do not.
in my own case, one other witness knows, but no one else, so i would answer the survey question with a "no".

Well, I got publicly reproved for apositacy before I ever came here. So I figured if I'm gonna get shit for it I might as well do it right! Seriously, people know I believe in evolution, but I think they'd be shocked if they knew I was talking on places like this.
So: NO

Perhaps there is a way to get a message out on the main page notifying people of the problem and telling them what to do in the mean time? This is going to continue to be a problem until something like this is done. Otherwise were going to be continually be flooded by messages like these.

Dealing with my mother
by SickofLies inmy mom knows that i really don't believe that the jw's have the 'truth' and she is always telling me to just give it more time and i'll snap out of it.
she thinks i'm going through a stage right now and i'll 'grow out of it' and eventually i'll want to return to the religion.
i try to reasure her that such hopes are futile, but often my conversations go like this:.

Ya, I lived in the US for 9 years, my parents still live there, I moved to Canada because 1. I was born there 2. I got accepted into McMaster 3. I wanted to get as far away from my exwifes family as possible :)
I think your right, my mom does seem to be coming along, I'm just glad she is listening, thats why I don't just DA because I really think I can save her. I feel bad though in a way because its all shes known for so long, she has a lot of friends there. But I also know the elders harass her and she is constantly complaining over the injustice in the congregation. I now at least now she doesn't look at the society as being infaliable. I told her about the UN and some other things and they didn't suprise her at all, she went through the 1975 incident and reconises that the society is imperfect. She says that she never believed the end would come in 1975 and people would look at her as some kind of apositate for saying that. The one thing she's hung up on is that the JW's are the only ones doing the preaching work and she says that when she goes door to door she talks to many people and none of them use the bible are able to prove her wrong. Now I can do a pretty good job of disproving the bible, but I don't want to do that, I feel no need to remove all religous hope from my mom, I just want to have a balanced view of things. I'd just be happy that if I DA myself that we would still talk. I think I'm almost there with her.

Aren't you afraid of God's judgment in denying him if your wrong?
Most certainly not. I also deny Zeus and Jupiter and Odin and Brahma, but this causes me no qualms. I observe that a very large portion of the human race does not believe in God and suffers no visible punishment in consequence. And if there were a God, I think it very unlikely that He would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence.
How do you as a scientist explain the beauty and harmony of nature?
I do not understand where this "beauty" and "harmony" are supposed to be found. Throughout the animal kingdom, animals ruthlessly prey upon each other. Most of them are either cruelly killed by other animals or slowly die of hunger. For my part, I am unable to see any great beauty or harmony in the tapeworm. I suppose your thinking of such things as the beauty of the starry heavens. But remember that stars every now and again explode and reduce everything in their neighborhood to a vague mist. Beauty, in any case, is subjective and exists only in the eye of the beholder.
You're only saying this because you've never been in the world and you don't know how bad it is out there.
In a sence I've always been in the world, I don't isolate myself from other people or refuse to talk to them because there not of the same religion as me. So I know what other people are like, besides you make the assumption that those who are in the 'truth' are spared any ill effect of the world, which clearly isn't true. Plus, I'm no fool, 99% of the people I know at univeristy are extremely happy and doing well, while 60% of the people in my kingdom hall are on antidepressants. But alas, I'm not getting through because it seems we keep having the same conversations over and over, any sugestions?

Misquoting Jesus
by SickofLies inbook review: the popular perception of the bible as a divinely perfect book receives scant support from ehrman, who sees in holy writ ample evidence of human fallibility and ecclesiastical politics.
though himself schooled in evangelical literalism, ehrman has come to regard his earlier faith in the inerrant inspiration of the bible as misguided, given that the original texts have disappeared and that the extant texts available do not agree with one another.
most of the textual discrepancies, ehrman acknowledges, matter little, but some do profoundly affect religious doctrine.

Book Review:
The popular perception of the Bible as a divinely perfect book receives scant support from Ehrman, who sees in Holy Writ ample evidence of human fallibility and ecclesiastical politics. To assess how ignorant or theologically manipulative scribes may have changed the biblical text, modern scholars have developed procedures for comparing diverging texts. And in language accessible to nonspecialists, Ehrman explains these procedures and their results. He further explains why textual criticism has frequently sparked intense controversy, especially among scripture-alone Protestants. In discounting not only the authenticity of existing manuscripts but also the inspiration of the original writers, Ehrman will deeply divide his readers. Although he addresses a popular audience, he undercuts the very religious attitudes that have made the Bible a popular book. Still, this is a useful overview for biblical history collections.

Dr Ehrman has provided the general reading public with a superb book that simply, clearly, and concisely reports and analyzes the many issues that confront anyone seeking to better understand the words and teachings of Jesus in particular and of the New Testament in general. With the seemingly never ending popularity of the fictional "Da Vinci Code" a corresponding interest in what really happened in the decades and centuries following the deaths of the apostles has also arisen. Since much of what Dan Brown includes in his novel is historically unreliable, a book like this from Dr Ehrman is especially helpful to the general reader. He demonstrates how the plethora of variant readings and manuscripts of the Greek New Testament have, from the beginning of church history, produced difficult challenges to sincere followers of Jesus, challenges that are not made less of a problem by either fundamentalist biblicism or evanagelical absolutism. He further demonstrates that prior to the rise of Nicene orthodoxy the Christian community was quite diverse and that the attempt to establish a uniformity among those who called themselves Christians did, in more than a few instances, influence how the text of the New Testament was copied and transmitted to succeeding generations. Evangelical Christians in particular ought to read this book and pay particular attention to Dr Ehrman's autobiographical essay at the beginning. Many thanks to Dr. Ehrman for writing a book that is at once challenging, stimulating, and, in its way, very spiritual.
Check out a John Steward interview with him: http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_daily_show/videos/most_recent/index.jhtml
This guy looked at over 5000 different manuscripts and has some very origional conclusions. Excellent for those who insist (falsely) that the bibles we have today are the same as the ones the origional christrians used.

Yes, the bible says that homosexuality is wrong, but it also says that women have to have babies to be saved and (if your worried about it form a salvation point of view) it says there will be a resurrection of the just and the unjust. From a biblical point of view there is no more reason to condemn your brother for being gay than there is for swearing. I’m not gay myself and I know I look at girls and are attracted to them, there is no way I could feel attracted to a guy, but some guys are, and I believe there must be a genetic reason for that. I am a biochem student, and one thing I’ve learned is that genetics controls every aspect of our appearance and our behavior. The thing when creatures reproduce, mutations crop up. These mutations are not always bad, most are natural and some are beneficial. From a population stand point, being gay is good for the human race as there are too many babies.
BTW, Welcome!
