  My two cents:

  Certain people in the CIA probably knew the attack was coming, perhaps even when and where. Yet they did nothing to stop it. Why? Because that's just the sort of crisis you need to get Americans to go to war.

  America has been looking for excuses to kick some middle east ass for years now, this goes back to Bush senior and before him. Americans would be wise to never again vote in a president who has ties to oil.

  This is probably no different than Pearl Harbor. It is likely that the Americans knew full well that Pearl Harbor would be attacked sooner rather than later, yet they "let" it happen. Why? To polarize public opinion and provide a prelude to war.

  Shazard: you are overlooking an important philosophical concept, with regards to skepticism.

  Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence to support them. If I told you that my buddy was the son of god, died and came back to life, would you believe me? What if I wrote it down? What if I had some other buddies saying the same thing?

  Not just "some" evidence, extraordinary evidence. And so far, I haven't heard of ANY actual evidence. Testimonials are anecdotal evidence, that is to say, not really evidence.

  Some people say Elvis isn't really dead (despite the pictures of him on the slab). Some people say Elvis never did any drugs! There are at least two different versions of what Elvis' favourite fried chicken recipe was.

  Elvis only died 30 years ago. Imagine trying to figure this crap out 2000 years from now.

  Seriously, this question reminds me of a few of the questions from the Scientology "personality test" they give out at the street level.

  1) Do you ever feel alone in a crowd?

  2) Do you ever feel that you are different/superior to your peers?

  These are questions that almost anyone will answer yes to.

  Seriously though, this is another point that's never sat well with me, because irrationality never sat well with me. It is beyond the imagination that every microscopic drop of blood EVER leaves the meat itself.

  Any JW that eats meat (and I know many that do. not to eat meat would smack too much of paganism, after all, thems animals is ours to gobble) has eaten SOME blood, and the eating of it is specifically what is supposedly forbidden, nevermind this transfusion crap.

  i just checked out the kingdom of the cults by r. zacherias from the library, origionally published in 1965 it has be revised and re-released in 2003 and it had some very interesting background info on c.t.

  dvw: good point. my own JW family takes the same stance, that these con artists were just men, that noone ever said any different, and that it doesn't really matter anymore. Somehow they look at their own tarnished past and ignore the rampant hucksterism that lead to it.

  Interestingly, the conflicts with a core JW belief, that origins are important (could somebody point me to a link to that entire watchtower article?). They believe that we're all sinners at heart because adam and eve were sinners, therefore "sinnerism" got passed onto us. By the same logic, what has been passed on to them?

  when drinking the wine (i don't think you'd get to eating the bread if you carry this first part out), make sensual, sinful sounds of ecstasy!

  better yet, noisily gulp down the whole glass of wine and top it with a little burp!

  How do I get this person off my back??

  after years of silence (and hence peace) someone from my jw days has decided to track me down in the hopes of "catching up.

  " now she knows where my new house is, and more than likely my phone number as well (makes me grateful for caller id.

  ) this jw did something to me when i was in high school that i will never, ever forgive her for; what's more, i don't even like her as a person - she's overbearing, egotistical and can be smothering at times.

  From the sounds of it, you don't owe this person any particular courtesy, so you can fall back on simple common courtesy, the kind you owe to strangers.

  Just politely and succinctly tell her you do not appreciate her company, and prefer not to associate with her. No need to be rude or use four-letter words, but no need to pretend either.

  If the polite-yet-firm approach doesn't work, then by all means tell her to go fuck herself.
