I guess money is money, and the WT doesn't look a gift dollar in the mouth. I guess by that logic as long as a cigarette company or a weapons manufacturer pays me money to do a job or as a contractor, it's not a big deal either.

The H.M. Riley Trust
by alice.in.wonderland inbecause someone, someone who misused their authority as financial information of such as is posted online relative to this trust is confidential communication between a financial planner, accountant, board of trustees and beneficiary of the trust; it's revealed the mutual funds owned by the riley trust have a "consumer staples/consumer goods" component, and one of the stocks in that component is phillip morris.. it's a completely immaterial amount of money and it's not generated by securities that are able to be traded, unless the entire mutual fund is sold off.
this is another fine example of people who have an axe to grind with jehovah's witnesses doing a whole lot of work to produce a "smoking gun" that really is nothing of the kind.. this stems from some financial information that was released related to a lady named henrietta riley.
apparently a wealthy jw that made the watchtower society the beneficiary of the income from her trust.

Violence Training
by MrFreeze indid anybody notice the paragraph in today's study edition that pretty much said that "violent video games and movies are training people to be violent towards each other during the great tribulation".. i really had to do my best to not laugh when i read this.
i don't know if any of you watch penn & teller's show.
they did a show on violent video games and their effect.

Thanks elderlite. I was looking for something specifically referencing armageddon, but maybe I've heard it from the platform and not in print.

Was the legend about Smurfs being demonic just an urban legend, or was it mentioned in the literature?
by IsaacJ22 ini never heard about the smurfs being evil until i joined the forum.
but when i look in the volume library, the word doesn't come up.
i was wondering if anyone ever heard mention of it in the literature--as in, was it an official position?.

What's silly is that this contradicts what they've printed in the past. I can't seem to find it, maybe someone can help, but I seem to remember reading that Jehovah may cause people to turn on each other violently. Like he did in the OT several times.

Wow, what's with the education of JWs today with their own beliefs? When I was his age, I would have at least had a good defense prepared for the DF'ing arrangement. I guess that's what you get when all the literature is dumbed down. Also, hasn't it been discussed recently that the hispanic culture has a harder time with the DF'ing arrangement?

Tougher Stance on the Disfellowshipped?
by Rydor inone of my best friends with whom i grew up (and pioneered) with has been disfellowshipped for the past 6 years.
his parents are still witnesses and, though they've been grieved over the fact that he's not a jw, they've always treated him well, and he pays them regular visits every month.. well he just informed me today that "the watchtower came out with stricter rules... my parents flat-out told me in person they can barely have any contact with me from now on.
" he's pretty depressed about it.. of course, the position on the disfellowshipped has largely been, "if they're out of the org, they're dead to you, family or not.

It's been that way for a long time. If there's been any local "problem" with say, family having some association with DF'd, they will touch on it on local needs or during a CO visit.

Sept.15th WT - WT Society uses Guilt & Fear to Avoid Friendship & Internet
by flipper inonce again my wife and i were sent the " witness only " wt version by our lurking jw friend that they study at wt study meetings.
and once again wt society is showing very controlling tendencies towards it's jw members.. do any of you remember the " old days " in the 1970's or early 1980's when witnesses used to have goody night after book study ?
or you would have a " potluck picnic " with about 30 to 40 people getting to know one another to draw close as friends outside the confines of the kingdom hall ?

I just realized something. They are saying this because of all of the negative backlash from the Book Study being done away with. People feel like there isn't nearly as much warm social interaction because of the small groups going away, so apparently this is their answer.
The beatings with continue until moral improves.
